JOSEF KRIZ AND FRANK SCHORIK, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO SAID FRANK SCHORIK AND ONE-HALF T0 JOSEPH BAUME/UK, JR., BOTH OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VENDING-MACHINE Original application led February Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.'
Bc it known that we, Joshi" FRANK Sonoma, citizens o't the United States, residing at Chicago, county ol Cook, and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Vending- Machines, of which the 'following is a specilication.
Our invention relates to improyenuaits in Vending machines and has Ytor its objecty the production oll an improred machine especially adapted to the sale ot slugs tor operating slug controlled telephones or similar mechanisms, the present application being a division ot our original application, Serial No. 542,58-t, tiled February 7th, ltlt), tor vending machines.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement oit parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings 'torming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure lv is a sectional elevation ot rending mechanism embodying our invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the easing inclosing the said mechanism in top plan View, Fig. 3 is an cle 'ation ot a member adapted to contain the slugs to be sold, Fig. Lt is a top plan view ot said member, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view oi said member, and Fig. t3 is a partial section through the bottom of the slug containing member illustrating the method ot discharge ot' the slugs.
The preferred it'orm ot construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises coin controlled mechanism l to which coins may be supplied through a chute Q and by means of which a downwardly extending arm 3 carrying a spring held trigger arm '-t may be oscillated through a certain angle. This coin controlled mechanism terms the subject matter of our original application, Serial No. 542,584, mentioned above, and needs no further description here. Trigger arm t is arranged to Contact with and engage tubes 5 carried by upper and lower plates (3 and 7. Plates G and 7 are rotatably mounted on pointed screws 8 and t) threaded in brackets l0 and l1 and held in position by lock nuts 12 and 13. Plate 6 is provided with openings l-t communicating with tubes 5, the said tubes being arranged with their centers on a circle having the axis ot rotation ot' plates and 7 'tor its center. rl`he periphery of plate (3 is provided with ratchet teeth l5 adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl 1G which holds said pawl and tubes against reverse rotations. Between the openings 1t plate t) is provided with upwardly projecting pins 1i' adapted to be engaged by an angularly shaped locking dog 1H piroted to bracket tt? and yieldingly held in contact with said pins by means o't' a spring th". The arrangement is such that at each oscillation ot' arm 3 trigger -t engages the side o't" a tube 5 and causes a partial rotation ot the tubes and their connections. l'lhe operative stroke ot arm It is sutiieient to carry the rear pin 1T contacting with dogl 1S over the apex i2() ot said dog whereupon the inclination o't the torward -taee ot said dog operating upon said pin will complete the partial rotations ot said plates and tubes until the adjacent rear piu contacts with the rear inclined siii'- Vtace et' said dog. 'lhe dog then serves to hold the tubes and plates in correct position. Thus it will be observed that upon the deposit o'tl a nickel in thc coin controlled mechanism the tubes 5 may be caused to take a partial revolution, the trigger -t snapping over the next adjacent rear tube 5 on the reverse movement o't arm 55 to assume a position ready to engage said tube upon the next operation ot said arm.
1Plate '7 is provided with wells or pockets it into which the tubes 5 tit at. their bottoms. Fach oi these wells is partially cnt away at the bottom and provided with a lateral dis charge slot in the side thereof. A circular slot 23, with the axis ot rotation as its center, is cut through the bottom of each of said wells. A pin 24 is secured in bracket 'tl to extend upwardly through slot 23 into the bottom oit wells 21, as shown in Fig. 6. Spring held pawls 25 are pivoted to the bottom o't plate 7 in position to Contact with and yieldingly hold the bottommost of the ile ot slugs Qt in each of said tubes against accidental displacement from said tube. The pin 2li is extended upwardly into wells Q1. just 't'ar enough to engage the bottommost ot a pile ot' slugs in the corresponding tube and well. Thus it will be observed that at each partial rotation of said tubes the bottommost slug in one tube will be engaged by pin 2st and held against rotation until the bottom ot the corresponding well passes trom under said slug Whereupon said slug will fall into a receptacle 2G set to receive it. Receptacle QG is connected by means of a chute 27 With a delivery rcceptacle 27 so that said discharge slug Will be conducted to said delivery receptacle whence it may be extracted by the depositor ot the nickel. rEhe slugs last mentioned may be of any orn the usual forms of slugs adapted to be deposited in any ordinary telephone in payment for the use thereof; the machine being especially devised for the purpose ot relieving the proprietor of establishments containing the telephones from the trouble of exchanging said slugs for money and the user of the telephone from the annoyance and delay incident thereto. In order to facilitate the manipulation of tubes 5 and provide a means for operation thereotl by a different torni of coin controlled mechanism, radiating pins 28 are secured to plate 6, as shown.
While We have illustrated and described the preferred form ot construction :tor carrying our invention into etliect this is capable ot' variation or modification Without departing from the spirit et the invention. idle; therefore, do not -wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modihcations as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention What We claim as nenY and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a vending' machine; the combination of a member mounted to rotate on a vertical. axis; one or more vertical receptacles adapted to retain piles of slugs and arranged on a circle having the axis ot' rotation of said member as a center, each `oi" said receptacles being provided with a lateral slot at the bottom for the discharge of a single slug and a circular slot in the bottom for the passage of a pin; a stationary pin projecting through said circular slot and into said receptacles to engage the bottom slug therein; a spring held pavvl adapted to retain the bottom slug in each of said receptacles; and mechanism for rotating said member7 substantially as described.
2. In a vending machine; the combination of a member mounted to rotate on a vertical axis; one or more vertical receptacles adapted to retain piles of slugs and arranged on a circle having the axis of rotation of said member as a center; each of said receptacles being provided With a lateral slot at the bottom for the discharge of a single slug and a circular slot in the bottom for the passage of a pin; a stationary pin projecting through said circular slot and into said receptacles to engage the bottom slug therein; a series of pins projecting vertically t'rom said member; a spring held an gular dog cooperating with said pins to torce said member to position; and means `for imparting a partial rotation to said member; substantially as described.
3. In a vending machine; the combination et' a member mounted on a vertical axis; one or more vertical receptacles adapted to retain piles et slugs and arranged on a circle having the axis of rotation of said member as a center; each of said receptacles being provided with a lateral slot at the lootn tom for the discharge of a single slug and a circular slot in the bottom for the passage oi a pin; a stationary pin projecting through said circular slot and into said receptacles to engage the bottom slug therein; a spring held paWl adapted to retain the bottom slug in each of said receptacles; a series of pins projecting vertically from said member; a spring held angular dog coperating With said pins to torce said member to position; and means for imparting partial rotations to said member, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of `tivo subscribing Witnesses.
