DEVICE FOR CUTTING PAPER SHEETS OR THE LIKE.
respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cutting Paper Sheets or the Like, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The invention relates to a device for cutting paper sheets or the like in which one of the cooperating parts is attached. to a movable plate.
The invention consists in making this plate upon the upper side of which the sheet to be cut is laid, movable and bearing one of the cooperating parts of the cutting device. By this means it is attained that the working of the device can be effected with one hand.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a like view partly in section showing a modification.
As will be seen from the drawings, the invention includes the base plate a and a lever plate 0 hinged to the base plate at (Z.
According to Fig. 1 the knife 2' is attached to a spring plate m, which is fixed on the one hand to the base plate a and at the same time contains the support for the pivot (Z of the lever plate 0. The plate at is curved downwardly and then up between the end edge of the base a and the knife 2'- to form a spacious channel n which receives the paper strips cut ofl. In consequence of the relatively great length of the plate m, its special shape and its attachment at the one longitudinal side, it holds the knife 2' in all positions of the lever plate 0 well in engagement with the knife 70 fixed to the latter.
According to Fig. 2 the same purpose is attained by attaching the knife 2' to a plate 7) movable around the axle 0, which plate is pressed by its springs 9 against the left knife is. The axle 0 is supported in lugs r of the base plate a and surrounded by the springs g. The channel 12. is here formed by the base plate a itself.
In these constructions the knives 2', 70 over- Specification of Letters Patent.

lap if the opener be regarded from above and in the position of rest at the end which comes last into play like the blades of an ordinary shears.
In order to open a letter envelop it is so placed upon the plate 0 that the edge to be cut off reaches to the plate m or the plate 7) and the right part of the lever plate 0 is depressed by pressing upon the envelop which need not be let go. The knife 70 moves up and cuts off, in combination with the knife 7', a narrow strip from the edge of the cnvcl op.
We claim:
1. In a device for cutting sheets of paper or the like, a base plate, a lever plate pivotally mounted thereon, and adapted to receive the paper to be cut upon its upper surface, a knife provided with a straight cutting edge secured to said lever plate, and a second knife attached to the base plate and mounted to swing in a horizontal plane. toward the first named knife, said second knife being free from curvature and being provided with a slanting cutting edge.
2. In a device for cutting sheets of paper or the like, a base plate, a lever plate pivotally mounted thereon and adapted to receive the paper to be cut upon its upper surface, a knife provided with a straight cutting edge secured to said lever plate, a second knife attached to the base plate and mounted to swing in a horizontal plane toward the firstnamed knife, said second knife being free from curvature and being provided with a slanting cutting edge and a spring operatively associated with said second knife to maintain it in engagement with said first knife.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
