To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I, EMIL J. F. QUIRIN, a citizen of the United States, resident 'of Tioga Center, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Leak-Alarms for Pneumatic Tires; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specification. Figure i is a longitudinal central section of my invention as applied with,the valve elo-sed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts broken away and showing the valve open to sound the whistle. Fig. is a similar view with escape of air stopped.
The invention relates to an alarm device for application to pneumatic tires of autotice when a serious leakage occurs in order that the car may be stopped before it is caused to be deflected in its course by a deflated tire, which may result in serious loss of life or limb and damage to the car.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates a spring controlled plunger valvein a nipple 7), having communication with the air chamber of the tire c, said valvebeing normally held closed by the pressure of air in the tire, and the tension of its spring a2, surrounding located between thevalve and a cup piece c3, having engagement with an inner shoulder c4, of said nipple, said cup piece being provided with lateral perforations c5. The inner rod extension c2, of the valve has slidable engagement with a central perforation c, of said cup piece.

Thus when the tire is pumped up to the point Where it is desired the alarm shall sound, say forty pounds pressure to the square inch, and the screw f, is adjusted until' the valve a, is pressed backward against the, tension of its spring a2, t'o open position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, air will be admitted through the lateral perforations of the cup-piece past the valve into the cylinder or tube d, around the plunger, and will find an exit through a lateral opening'aZB, communicating with a right-angle whistle extension 71 of said tube to sound the whistle. The tube or cylinder d, with the plunger e, and whistle extension carried thereby, are now unscrewed from the nipple, I), and the tire uniped up to normal pressure, say 80 poun s to the square inch, when the tube el, and parts carried thereby are screwed in placev again upon the neck 7), the pressure of the spring g, as previously adjusted in the manner stated, being now insufficient to overcome the increased air pressure against the valie a, which will remain closed until a leak occurs in the tire and the pressure therein is reduced to forty pounds, when the alarm will sound as before stated.
y', indicates a jam nut for the adjusting screw, whereby when the regulation of the tension of the spring is made this regulation may be fixed against casual disarrangement. As shown in Fig. il of the drawings, after t-he whistle has sounded for a. suicient length of time to alarm the chauffeur of the motor ear, the plunger e will takea bearing against the screw-threaded end of the nipple 7), to stop further unnecessary escape of air from the tire in sounding the whistle.
