THOMAS F. KELLY, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS F. SULLIVAN, 0F PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
TRACK-CLEARER.
Application filed December 4, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Track-Clearers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide suitable means under the control of the motorman, for scraping out and brushing the grooves of railroad tracks, whereby the said grooves may be kept clear of any ob strut-ting object or material.
My invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation illustrating my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front view. Fig. st represents a detail section. Fig. 5 represents a side view of the driving gears.
In the drawing, A represents the forward platform of a trolley car, B, B, the forward wheels of the car, and C the forward axle. The shaft I) is journaled in the bearings Z), L, of the downwardly eXtending hangers E, E, and upon the shaft D is placed the sprocket wheel F, which is driven from the sprocket wheel G on the axle C, by means of the chain H. To the opposite ends of the shaft D are pivoted the bellcrank levers I, I, the outer ends of which are provided with track clearers J, J, which are adapted to clear out the grooves a, a, of the rails K, K, the said levers I, I, being connected together at their upper ends by means of the rod L, from the middle of which connection is made to the lower end of the hand lever M, by means of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. "Z, 1911. Serial No. 531,447.
connecting rod N, and by means of the said hand lever, the clearers J, J, are brought down to the track rails K, K, and are automatically raised therefrom by means of the spring P.
The track clearer J is actuated downward by means of a spring 0, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the said clearer may be enabled to yield to any positive obstruction without causing an excessive jar upon the hand lever M.
Upon the shaft D beyond the bearings Z), 5, of the truck frame, are keyed the gears c, c, which engage with the teeth of the gears (Z, (l, secured to the inner ends of'the shafts c, c which shafts turn loosely in the journals f, f, of the forwardly projecting arms 2', 2', of the bell-crank levers I, I. And to the projecting outer portions of the said shafts e, c, are secured the rotary brushes Q, Q, by means of which the track rails K, K, are cleared of dirt or rubbish the said rotary brushes and track groove clearers being brought down simultaneously by means of the hand lever M and raised simultaneously by means of the spring P.
I claim as my invention:
In an apparatus for clearing out the grooves of a railroad track, the combination of a spring actuated groove clearer, and a rotary brush, with a spring actuated bell-crank lever, whereby the clearer and brush may be raised or lowered simultaneously, and a hand lever connected with the bell-crank lever, substantially as described.
' SOCRATES SCHOLFIELD,
BENJAMIN L. DENNIS.
