- Letters Patent No. 98,37 8, dated December 28, 1869.
rmnovnn RAILWAY-CAR TRUCK The Schedule referred to in than Letters Patent and making part of the lame To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, GEORGE HEBRIOK, of Wa verly, in the county of Tioga, and State otNewXork, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Attaching Oar-Wheels to the Trucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and-operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings," making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
' Figure 1, of the drawings, is a bottom view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of same.
Figure 3 is a verticalcross-section of same.
:Figure 4 is a top view of the slotted pedestal of same.
Figure 5 is a top view ofbearing plate, showing same.
wheels to the trucks of railroad-cars, and consists, mainly, inthe construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter described, whereby each wheel is rendered capable of revolving independently, and. also of taking a position .on curves parallel'to the rail.
The letter A, of the drawings, designates the truck frame, supported on the rubber cushions 1: o by the plates B B, which rest on the pedestals G O.
The wheel D runs between the upright arms h h of each pedestal G, and its short axle afinds its bearings in the lower portions of these arms.
The upper ends of the arms are connected .by the plate 0, to the centre of which is attached the swivelpin e, which connects the pedestal to the plate B,and allows said pedestal to turn, thus enabling the wheels to take a position on curves parallel to the rails.
A nut, s, secures the top of the swivel-pin, which projects through the plate B A washer is used between the plates B and c on the pin 0.
My invention relates to means for attaching the.
Near each end of the plate 0, a curved slot, at, is formed, through which passesv a pin, z, fixed to the plate B, thereby limiting the change of direction of the wheel. v
To the lower end of the inner ar'm h of each pedesta] 0, which extends below the fianched end of the axle, is pivoted the end of a brace, H.
By means of these braces, each pedestal is connected to its opposite fellow, in such a manner as to assist materially in the preservation of its upright position. The wheels D D, also, are thereby kept at the proper distance from each other.
The position of the brace -H. below the axles gives it so much power that it supplies the place of the connecting-axle usually employed between the wheels. The short axle a of each car-wheel is grooved on each side of the wheel,,to form the journals thereof.
What I claim as my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is- V car-truck, provided with the guard-pins: z, the swivelpedestal O, pivoted to the plate B, said pedestals having. curved slots, at a, and forming bearings for the journals of the car-wheel.
2. The car-wheel D, having grooved axle a, in con'ibination with the swivel-pedestal G andpivoted brace H.
3. The ear-truck 'herein'described, having frame A, rubber cushions 1: e, bearing-plates B B, provided with pins 2 z, and pivoted to the slotted pedestals U G, braced by the pivoted bars H H, and forming bearings for the grooved axles a a of the car-wheels. In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribcd my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
' GEO. HERRIOK.
Witnesses:
J. Nnwrox DEXTER, MILTON J. WARNER.
