Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOAH J. TILGHMAN, OF SALISBURY, MARYLAND.'
IMPROVEM ENT IN CROW-KILLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 9,835, dated July 5,1853.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, NOAH .I. TILGHMAN, of Salisbury, Worcester county, State of Maryland, have invented an Instrument for Killing Crows, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l isaperspective View ot' the instrument set for crows. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same when discharged.
Similar letters referto corresponding parts.
The instrument consists of a sharp-pointed and bearded rod A, resembling a'dart or spear let into a sliding block B, inserted into a vertical chamber C, formed inthe head of a rough post D, planted where crows are in the habit of frequenting. Between the lower end of the sliding block and the bottom of the chamber in which it slides is placed a helical spring S, said spring being contracted or compressed into a small compass when the dartis drawn down below the head ot the post, the dart being held in that position by a dog bearing against an arm or projection E of the sliding block until started by the Weight of the crow when he lights upon the top of a section D of the post, separated from the main body thereof and connected to it by a sliding collar F, fixed to said section or head, sliding over the reduced end of the post, the said collar being attached to a rod G, leading down to a trigger I-I, bearing against the dog I. IV hen the crow lights upon the upperend of the sliding section ot the post, the trigger is moved and the dog started, thus liberating the dart, which is thrown suddenly upward by the action of the helical spring, piercing the crow on the under part of the body and either killing him instantly or holding him securely to the post until captured. The shank of the dart is provided with an arm E, by which it is drawn down and the spring contracted. The dart is depressed until the point is below the head of the sliding section of the post and is held in that position bythe dog, which is brought against the arm and the trigger against the'dog.
Having thus described Iny instrument for killing crows, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ot the dart A, helical spring S, sliding rest or head D, attached to the trigger H, the trigger H, and the dog I, with the hollow post D, in which itis placed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed Iny name before two subscribing witnesses.
NOAH J. TILGHMAN.
