The object of niy present iuvention is to prodnee n strnt'ture which may be readily O attaehed to the inner fare of exit doors and b \""ineans of which the (loor while normally openable from the outside in an ordinaryv Jnanner, may nevertheless he readily loeketi against such mzmipnlation, `Yet. in cases of 2? pnnie, etc.. will bo openable by mere pressure in the (lireetion of opening from the inshle. the parts being; So combined and arrangetl that they may be applied to single or twin doors in a manner whirh will nothe in any way nnsightly.

In the drawings, 10 inclicates the nor- `mally stationary anal unnsed door of a pair 'of twin doors, and 11 indicates the other of 'said doors. It is to be horne in mind that the door '11, with its attachments, may he nsetl inthe inanner of an ordinary single door, without. alterations, .Door 10 is normally stationary and is held by bolts 12 at 5 the top and bottom. It is very desnahle that the two piungers 31 and 32 lie in a plane nhieh is parallel with the face of the door in order that the casing 26 may be comparativt'ly thin so as not to stick out into the room and he nnsigl'itly. As these two plungers need to work in opposite direetions .wl should iz'e operahle independently by the emergeney bar 21, or by a knob from' the outside ot' the door., f connect the two plnngers 32 hy a lever 59 which lies within ('asing 26 and is provided at its opposite ends with pins 41 and 4'2 which take into notches 43 and :H formed respectivel)v in the plungrers 31 and 32. lt is Yery essential that the emergency bar 21 he at all times in position to be effective in operation of the looking mechanism so paratns will result in an inoperativc condition. It needs therefore to he yieldingly hold in its operative position hy a means which is' distinct fr'om and nnaifected by the meehanism hy which the holts may he withdrawn from the exterior of the door and theret'ore normally yioldingly hold the har 21 at some distanee from the faee of the door, in the position indieated iu full lines in Fig. 3, h) means of light Springs (3? one of which is nesled between the hracket :'21 and arm 22 and another of which is silnilarl)Y nested between arm 23 and car 25. the arrangement being such that, throughont any aetuation of the :ipparatus by means of knoh 38, bar 21 will remain in the position shcwn in full lines in Fig. 3 and will therefore at all times he in position to he carried through its aetuating movemenl. to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, by any force exerted thereon and having even a small component in the direetion of opening the door.

The edperating door 11 might he provided with an apparatns sur-h as is applied to door 10 hut. this is not at all necessary as the hults 12 are sullicient to hold holh doors in place if merhanism is' provided which Will interiot'lt with the door 10. As a eonsequenr'e I provide for the door 11 a modified apparalus` which is not only suitahle for'use on the twin door 11 hut may also he used on an ordinary single door. In this form I provide a har 21 having' an arm 2z at. one end and an arni E23 at the other. 'l'he ariu 22 is connected to a ln'acln't 24 and the arm 23 is provided with a finger 27, these parts being' exactly the same as the similarly lettered parts in the structure already descrihed. In the present form. arm 23 is pivoted to an ear T1 carried by a easing 72 which, in most particulars. is like the casino; 2G.
