Be it known that l, Grenen F. SHAvnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the countyv of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap- Shaving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device which is primarily designed to be used in connection with a toilet fixture adapted to supply soap in such a form that it may be readily and economically used, such as soap shaving and granulating machines.
lt has been found by many experiments with soap shaving machines that much better results are produced when the cake of soap is held against the cutter with a practically uniform pressure as the soap shavings will then be of uniform thickness and the cutter is much less liable to clog and will operate much more smoothly and etliciently under these conditions.
Vfhe object of my invention is to provide a device which may be used in connection with soap shaving machines and will hold the cake of soap against the cutter with a practically uniform pressure. To accomplish this result l `)rovide a device which is in the nature of a lazy-tongs or toggle actuated by a spring. One end of the series of toggle levers is fixed in position and the opposite or moving end is adapted to operate against a disk which presses against the cake of soap and holds the same in position against the cutter.
The construction of a soap shaving machine such as l have chosen to illustrate this application of my invention is fully described in my co-pending application Ser. No. 277,769, filed contemporaneously with this one. rlhe same general features of construction are shown in both applications but the distinguishing features embodying this invention will be specifically described herein and definitely defined in the claims.

In the soap shaving device which l have chosen to illustrate my invention in the drawings herewith a vert-ical soap container 1, is preferably cylindrical in form, constructed of sheet metal and provided with a suitable cover 2. A. support or bracket of suitable form may be provided for attachw ing the device to the wash basin or toilet fixture with which it is to be used. One end of such a bracket is shown at 3 where it projects through the container and is riveted thereto forming a support for a vertical shaft i which is adapted to rotate the cutter. A suitable handle and lever such as 6 is provided at the upper end of said shaft which projects through a bearing in the cover 2. This bearing is of peculiar construction and is so designed as to prevent any water leaking through the cover to the interior of the container. rThe construction of this bearing is described in my co-pending application above referred to.
A sleeve 7 provides a support to which links 8 and 9 are pivotally attached. A pair of crossed levers 10 and 11, pivoted at their intersection, are pivotally attached to the outer end of the links 8 and 9 respectively, and to the opposite ends of the levers 10 and 11 and second set of crossed levers 12 and 13, also pivotally connected at their intersection, are attached. At the lower end of the levers 12 and 13 are pivotally attached a pair of links 14 and 15 which are in turn pivotally attached to a movable sleeve 16 surrounding the shaft.
A guiding sleeve 17 is attached to a disk rlhis disk is adapted to operate against the upper end of a cake of soap 21 to hold the same in engagement with the rotating cutter 2Q, located at the under side of the cake of soap.
A coil spring 20 surrounds the shaft i and is adapted to operate against the lower portion of a tubular member 18 which incloses said spring for a portion of its length, the lower end of said member being so formed as to provide a stop to engage said spring. The upper end of the spring operates against the stop 7 which is attached to the cover 2 and is adapted to be compressed between y downward.

At the upper end of the movable tubular member 18 a collar 19v is attached and to this collar the crossed levers 10 and 11 are attached at their intersection by a pivotal connection.
The combination of links and levers above described form a lazytongs or toggle device and the operation of the spring when under compression is to move the tubular member 18Vdo'wnward. As ther links 8 and 9 Yare held at their upper end by the sleeve 7 and as the levers 10 and 11 are attached to the aforesaid tubular member 18 by means of the collar r19 at their intersection as described the downward movement of the tubular member 18 will be multiplied or increased by the extension of the lazy tong device. The lower end of the lazy tong device is attached to the sleeve 1G as described and this sleeve operates against the disk 5 to move the same downward against the cake of soap. rThe maximum downward pressure of the spring 20 corresponds to the uppermost position of the disk 5 and decreases as the disk moves The combination of levers forming a lazy tong device such as described abovemultiplies the movement caused by the extension of the spring and consequently the necessary movement ofthe disk can be produced with a much smaller extension of the spring and consequently with a much less difference between the maximum and mini- Vmum thrust of the spring Vthan would be much less space and operates through a limited movement, this movement being multiplied Vto the desired amount by the use of the lazy tong device as already described.
It will be understood that the number and length of the lazy tong levers may be varied to suit the different requirements and will bedependent upon the relative strength of the spring used. f n
Ther construction of the cutter and other features of this device are fully described in my co-pending application above referred to and as this device is equally applicable to various designs of soap shaving or granulating machines, it is not thought necessary to describe in detail the construction or the other features of this machine.
The features herein shown and described are intended as an illustration of an opera.- tive embodiment of my invention and it will be evident that the details of construction shown admit of many changes to meet various requirements.
lVhat I claim is: p
1. In a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container, a cutter suitably supported therein, means for operating said cutter, a pair of crossed levers pivotally connected at their intersection, a follower, links pivotally attached to said crossed levers and similarly attached to said follower, links pivotally attached to said crossed levers and similarly attached to said container and spring means connecting and constantly operative between said cross levers and said container.
2. In a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container provided with a cover portion, a cutter suitably supported within said casing, a follower located within said casing, a system of levers forming a lazytong device interposed between said cover portion and said follower and pivotally coii- -nected to each of said parts, a spring scat formed upon said lazy-tong device, a spring seat formed upon said cover portion, and a spring connecting and constantly operative between said seats and normally urging said lazy-tong device extension.
3. In a soap shaving device, the combination of a container provided with a. cover portion, a cutter suitably supported within said container, a follower located within said container, a plurality of levers constructed to constitute a lazy-tong device iiiterposed between said cover portion and said follower, a spring casing carried by said lazy-tong device, and a spring located within said spring casing and connecting and constantly operative between the bottom wall thereof and said cover portion.

In a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container having a cover portion, a. cutter suitably supported within said container, a shaftI for operatingrsaid cutter, a follower located within said casing, one or more pairs of crossed levers pivotally connected at their intersection and interposed between said cover port-ioii and said container, links connecting each of said last mentioned parts with said crossed levers, a. spring seat carried by said crossed levers at their points of intersection, a spring seat carried by said cover portion and an extensile spring interposed between said spring seats.
5. In a soap shaving machine, the combination of a casing provided with a reinovable cover portion, a cutter mounted to rotate interiorly of said casing, a shaft connected with said cutter and operable from a position exteriorly of said casing, a follower, a plurality of pairs of pivotally conlevers constituting each pair being pivotally connected at their points of intersection, a spring seat supported at the point of intersection of the pair of levers most remote from said follower, and an extensile spring interposed between said spring seat and said cover portion.
(3. in a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container having a removable cover portion, a cutter suitably supported for rotation within said container, a shaft extending through said cover portion and operatively engaged with said cutter, a follower positioned upon said shaft, a plurality of pairs of crossed levers pivotally connected at their points of intersection, a lever of each pair being pivot-ally connected to a lever of another pair, links connecting one pair of said crossed levers Vwith said follower, links connecting anotherI pair of said crossed levers with said cover portion, a spring casing carried by said last ment-ioned pair of levers at their points of intersection, a spring seat formed upon said cover portion, and a spring located within said spring casing and interposed between a portion thereof and the spring seat of said cover portion.
7. ln a soap shaving machine, the combiation of a container, a cutter suitably supported within said container, means for operating said cutter, a follower located within said casing, a lazy-tong device located within said casing and interposed between said container and said cover portion, and a spring connecting and constantly operative between said lazy-tong device and said cover portion, said spring' exerting its stress in a direction parallel to the direction of eXtension of said lazy-tong device.
8. ln a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container having a removable cover portion, a cutter suitably supported within said container, a shaft extending through said cover portion and operatively connected with said cutter, a follower positioned upon said shaft, a lazy-tong device arranged at either side of said shaft, links connecting said lazy-tong devices with said follower and said cover port-ion, a spring casing positioned upon said shaft and supported by said lazy-tong devices, and a spring located within said spring casing and interposed between the bottom .wall thereof and said cover portion and urging said lazy-tong devices to extension.
9. ln a soap shaving machine, the combination of a container, a cutter, means for operating the cutter, a follower, a pair of crossed levers pivotally connected at their intersection, links pivotally attached to each end of said levers and to the upper end of the container and the follower, respectively, a tubular member forming an intermediate support attached to said levers at their intersection and to the follower, and a spring eXtensile between and connected to said tnbular member and the container.

In a soap shaving machine, the combin'ation of a container, a cutter, means for operating said cutter, a pair of crossed levers pivotally connected at their intersection, links pivotally attached to each end of said levers a tubular member forming an intermediate support attached to said levers at their intersection, and resilient means operat-ively connected to said tubular member to operate the device to hold a cake of soap in position against the cutter.
