Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MADISON TAYLOR llnLMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Pool-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful. improvements in pool registers and more particularly to that class of registers used in connection with a tri-angular frame used in racking the balls, the object being to provide a register which is so constructed that it will be impossible to rack the balls without registering the same so that the proprietor of the pool. room can ascertain the number of games played at the end of the day.
A further object of the invention is to provide a register with a plurality of'individual registers of the ordinary construction of cyclometers now in use each of said registers being operated by a. key numbered consecutively in respect to the number of tables in the pool room whereby the proprietor can tell how many games of pool have been played. on each table at the end of the day and the total number of games.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a register exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is composed of a few parts which are so arranged in respect to each other that they are not likely to get out oi order in use.

A still further object of the invention is to provide two total registers in connection with the device one of which is operated each time any one of the keys is pressed. and the other is operated every time that the balls are racked up whereby the totals of the same should register at the end of the day if the attendanthas operated the register at each time a game has been played.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the register with a lever for drawing in the pusher which extends into the frame so that the same can be withdrawn into postition to rack the balls and at the same time the bell will be sounded and the game recorded by one of the registers.
With these objects in View, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In carrying out my improved invention I employ a casing A adapted to be secured to the side ol the tri-migular frame F) tor racking the balls by bolts A said casing being provided with a removable cover 0 which is provided with apcrturod lugs adapted to it over a. pin A and register with a sleeve A which is interiorly threaded and has mounted therein a plug 4 provided with a reduced end which is adapted to be forced in the lug of the cover by a key A. so as to lock the cover in position so as to prevent any one tampering with the mechanism within.
Arranged within the casing A. is a base D on which are arranged a plurality of registers E of the ordinary construction of cyclometers now in use each of said registers being provided with an operating shaft E carrying a crank E having outwardly projecting pin members E which extend through elongated openings F formed in the headed members between square bolts F which are mounted within openings formed in an angled plate secured to the rear Wall of the casing. Said bolts being provided with longitudinal threaded bores (ill in which are secured the threaded lower onus of stems G of keys G which have numerals arranged thereon from one to seven and adapted to correspond with the number of tables arranged, within the pool room it of course being understood that where a greater number of tables are used a corresponding number of keys will he used in the register as the registers are adapted to be termed ot ditlerent sizes to suit ditlerent size pool rooms. These stems work through openings formed in the top of the casing and carry washers which bear against coiled springs Gr arranged around the bolts F the lower ends of which bear against the angled plate carried by the casing-so that when a key is depressed and released it will be torced back into its normal position again. These registers are adapted to be operated at each time that a game has been played upon the l table corresponding in number and the attendant is supposed to press the key downwardly when he at-ks the balls up so that i the proprietor at the end of the day can tell exactly how many games have been played on each table.
The base D at its t'orward corners is provided with blocks having bearing screws ll extending outwardly theretrom on which are mounted the apertured ends of a substantially U-shaped frame H which extends 1 around to the rear of the keys under the pins E and is adapted to be pressed downwardly by the same when any one of the l keys is operated, said frame being returned to its normal position by coiled springs ll which connect the frame to the angled plate. The U-shaped frame is provided with a lug H having an elongated opening through which extends a pin 1 carried by a cram; l of the operating shatt l of a r gister which is adapted to register the total number of games that have been played on all of the tables and it will be seen that when any one of the keys is operated so as to register that a game has been played on a certain table the frame will be pressed downwardly so as to operate the register I.

The free end of the spring clapper extends l down under the bearing screw so as to hold the same in position and the shaft is proada an arm N J so as to form a stop for the shaft whereby the movement of the spring will be limited so that the clapper will strike the bell correctly.
Arranged within the casing at one end is a sleeve 0 in which is slidably mounted a spring actuated pin .P which extends out into the frame and is provided vith a button l" at one end adapted to be pressed inwardly by the balls when the same are being racked up and the other end of the pin is provided with a longitudinal slot in which is slidabl v 4 mounted the end of an oper: ting lever Q mounted on a stud Q. within the casing and extends out through a slot tormcd in the end rt the casing so that it will be in position to be readily grasped by the person racking the 1 balls up in order that he may draw the button up against the it' 'ame so that it will be out of the way in racking the balls up. If the person is honest and is not trying to cheat he will operate this lever so as to draw the pin out of the frame but it will be seen that it will be impossible to rack the balls up without first moving the. pin inwardly and it he should try to rack the balls without drawing the pin inwardly one of the balls would force the same imvardly and f cause the same to register as will be hereinafter fully described.

3y this arrangement the bell is also sounded every time the lever is operated so as to notify the proprietor that a game has been played upon one of the tables and the balls have been racked up ready to start again.

From the foregoing description itwill. be seen that I have provided a pool register which is provided with a number of individual registers which are so connected and operated that a. total register will be operated at the same time any one of the registers is o erated whereby a number of games at any one of the tables will be recorded and at the same time the number of games played upon all of the tables will be recorded so that it is almost impossible to defraud the pro prictor as at the end of the day it is only necessary for him to remove the cover from the register to lind out exactly how many games of pool have been played within the establishment.
What I claim isz- 1. In a device of the kind described the combination with a frame for racking balls of a casing secured to said frame, registers arranged within said casing, keys for operating said registers, a spring actuated frame operated by said keys. spring actuated hook members carried by said frame, a shaft provided with sleeves carrying lugs adapted to be engaged by said hook members a bell and a clapper carried by said shaft for engaging the bell.

A. pool register comprising a casing adapted to be attached to a frame a number of registers arranged within said casing, each being provided with an operating shaft carrying a crank and pin, bolts arranged over said pins, keys carried by said bolts a frame adapted to be operated by said pins, a total register operated by said frame, a shaft car-- rying a clapper, a bell adapted to be engaged by said clapper and means carried by said frame for oscillating said shaft.

In a device of the kind described the combination with frame of a casing secured to said frame, a shaft arranged within the casing carrying a clapper, a bell adapted to be engaged by said clapper, a spring actuated pin mounted within the casing extending into said frame, a pivoted lever opented by said pin, a register operated by said lever, and pawl and ratchet mechanism carried by said shaft adapted to be operated by said lever whereby said bell will be sounded when the pin is moved inwardly.

In a device of the kind described the combination with a tri-angular frame, for racking pool balls, of a casing carried by the frame a spring actuated pin mounted within the -asing extending into said frame having a button arrai -ed on one end and provided with a slot a its other end, a lcer pivotally mounted within the casing extending through said slot, a register provided with an operating shaft carrying a crank and pin, a link connecting said pin to said lever, a bell a shaft carryii'ig a clapper for engaging said bell, a pawl and ratchet mechanism carried by said shaft and a lug carried by said lever for engaging said pawl and ratchet mechanism whereby said shaft will be oscillated to cause said clapper to engage said bell.

In a device of the kind described the combination with a casing adapted to be se cured to a rack, of a number of registers being provided with an operating shaft carrying a crank naving-a laterally projecting pin, sliding bolts provided with beads hav ing elongated openings arranged over said pins, keys carried by said bolts springs surrounding said bolts for returning said keys to their normal position a spring actuated frame mounted within the casing adapted to be engaged by said pins, a total register having an operating shaft carrying a crank and pin extending through a lug formed on said frame, a shaft carrying a spring clapper, a bell adapted to be engaged by said clapper sleeves fixed on said shaft carrying lugs, spring actuated hook members carried by said frame for engaging said lugs whereby said clapper will be forced into engagement with the bell when any one of said keys is operated.
