To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Eenn'r H. GOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stove and has for its object to provide a stove suitable for use on a railway car as an auxiliary heater to heat the car when the regular heating system can not, for any reason, be operated, which shall have the certain new and improved features, construct-ions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is shown in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the stove, beingv a section taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3 8 of Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawing, 61 designates a base plate preferably formed with a neck 62 extending' through an opening 68 in the flooring 1() of the car, the base plate being bolted to the floor by bolts 64 and supporting a base member and an outer casing 66, the base member supporting a casting 67 and a gra-te 58. The space 69, within casting 67 above the grate, constitutes the combustion chamber. The space within base member 65 is divided by a plate 70 so as to form an ash. pit 71 and an air space 72, which latter is in communication with the atmosphere outside of the car through opening G3. rllhe stove has the usual doors 73 and 7 4, giving access to respectively the combustion chamber and the ash pit.
The base member 65 is formed on opposite sides with the openings 75 (Fig. 7) in which are set the plates 76 having openings 77. Shutters 78, formed with openings 79, are adapted by movement back and forth to open or close the openings in the plates 7 6. The outer casing 66 is likewise formed with openings in which are set the damper plates 80 having openings 81 adapted to be closed by the shutters 82 which are formed with openings 83 that can be made to register with the openings 81 in the damper plates Specification of Letters Patent.

so as to put the air chamber 83 between casing G6 and the inner casing 6.5, 67 in communication with the interior of the car. The shutters 78 and 82 on each side of the stove are fastened by means of strips 84 to a ring 85, to which is attached a handle 86 that projects through an opening in the outer casing 6G of the stove.
Preferably, the casting 67 is constructed with the narrowed portion 87 and opposite this place on the inside of casing 66 is secured a baiiie plate 88, this construction increasing the heating surface over which the air has to pass before escaping from the air chamber and making the course of the same somewhat circuitous. The casting 67 is provided at its upper end with a neck 67a, around which is fitted a spider ring 89, to which the outer casing 66 is secured and to which are secured the tie rods 90 which eX- tend through the base plate 61. The casing is formed at its upper end with the openings 9() and is preferably provided above these openings with the deflecting cap 91. Preferably, the deflector 92 is suspended in the upper end of the combustion chamber. By this arrangement the valves admitting air to the air chamber are simultaneously controlled so that when the valve controlling the inflow from outside is open, the valve controlling the inflow from the room is closed, and vice versa. This is desirable because of the likelihood of the casting forming the combustion chamber being burned out if, by inadvertence, the air chamber should be entirely closed at any time, and for other reasons which will be obvious.
I claim:
1. In a stove, the combination with a base member, means forming an air space in said base member, which air space is in communication with the atmosphere outside of the apartment in which said stove is located, means on said base member constituting a combustion chamber, an outer casing surrounding said combustion chamber and base member having a discharge opening in the upper end thereof, said base member and outer casing being formed with air openings, shutters which are adapted to close said air openings, means for connecting said shutters together so that one set of openings is uncovered when the other set is covered, said means comprising a rin surrounding said base member to which said shutters are attached, and a handle on Vsaid ring which I chamber, said outer casing and base member projects ont of said outer casing.
2. In a. stove, t-he combination With a base plate, having an opening therein adapted to communicate With the atmosphere outsideE of the apartment in which said stove is located, a base member on said base plate, a plate which divides said base member so as to form therein an air space and above the same an ash pit, means constituting a combustion chamber above said ash pit, an outer casing having an air discharge opening in the upper end thereof; said outer casing being formed with air openings and said base member being formed with openings which put the air space therein in communication with the space in the outer cas ing, shutters adapted to close the air openings in said base member and in said outer casing, a ring surrounding said base member to which said shutters are attached, and a handle on said ring.
3. In a stove, the combination With a base plate formed with a neck adapted to project through an opening in the floor on Which the stove rests, a base member on said base plate, a plate which extends across said base member dividi'ngthe same into an air chamber and ash pit, and a casting constituting a combustion chamber supported on said base member, a grate in said combustion chamber, an outer casing on the base plate inclosing said base member and combustion being provided with a series of openings, shutters adapted to close said openings, and means connecting said shutters whereby the shutters of the outer casing are open When those of the base member are closed, and vice versa.
