ELECTRIC-CONDUCTOR MOLDING.

Be it known that I, blmxnv M. Dunn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pcnnsylmnia, have invented ccrti'iin new and useful Iin jn'ovcu'ients in lClectrioGonductor Molding, of which the tollowing is a specification.
hIy invention relates to an iinpro'wment in electric '11'iducto1,' moldings and it has for its object to provide a molding in which the conductor channels are provided at intervals with undercut portions or sections. It has been found that a molding of this character is effective to support and hold the conductors prior to the time that the cover is secured over the top of the molding and it has been further found that when the walls of the channels of the moldings are straight except at intervals, the conductors may be inserted more readily in the said channels.
A convenient embodiment of my inven tion is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a. part of this SPQClfiCil tion but it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction within the scope of the claims may be made without departing from ny invention.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a top plan view with the cover removed of a section of molding embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2----2 of Fig. 1, a con ductor being shown in section in one of the channels; Fig. 8 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, a couple of conductors being shown in section in the channels and the cover being shown; Fig. 4c is a sectional view of a slightly modified construction of molding; Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a further modification; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a section of molding with the cover removed, showing still another modified construction; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings,1 designates an electric conductor molding having conductor channels 2 therein, the walls of which are shown as being substantially vertical with respect to the plane of the molding except at intervals, as indicated at- 3. The walls of the conductor channels need not be vertical, but may be inclined outwardly from their bottoms so that their upper or lip edges are wider apart than their central or body portions.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one side of the respective channels at 3 is undercut so that a portion or section of the wall of the channel overhangs the channel, whereby the mouth of the channel is smaller than the central or body portion thereof.
Adjacent to the undercut portions or sections 01. the channels, I have provided the slots 5, whereby a narrow strip of material (3 is formed, which is flexible and therefore movable to widen temporarily the upper edges or lips of the channels to permit the insertion of the electric conductor 7 in the channels at these points of the molding.
In F 1 of the drawings, I have shown two undercut sections or portions. It will be understood that these undercut sections or portions may be placed at such distances apart in the molding as may be found desirable.
In Fig. 3, I have shown the cover 10 in place upon the top of the molding extending over the channels 2 and over the condoctors 7 therein. The cover may be secured to the molding in any manner desired.
In Fig. 4, both sides of the respective channels 11 are undercut, as indicated, and as in the previous construction, these undercut sections or portions are provided at inter als. In this figure I have shown the two slots 12 respectively adjacent to one of the sides of each of the channels 11 so as to provide the said channels with short sections at intervals of movable side Walls 13.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a construction having both sides of the channels 14 undercut, as in Fig. 4- (such undercut sections or portions being arranged at intervals). In the construction shown in Fig. 5, however, I have provided grooves 15 upon both sides of the channels 14, whereby the thin portions 1i) are formed so that both side walls of the channels 14 in Fig. 5 in the region of the undercut sections are movable.
In Figs. 6 and 7, I have shown a construction difi ering from that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, in that the undercut sections or portions of the channels 17 are formed, as indicated at 18, upon the outside of the said channels. The grooves 19 are formed outside the said undercut portions or sections, as indicated, so that the flexible strips formed between the said grooves and the said channels are located outside of the said channels, that is, between the said channels and the edges of the molding.
In the use of a molding embodying my invention, it will be understood that the electric conductor may be readily placed or inserted in the portions of the conductor channels intermediate the undercut sections or portions of the molding little force being required to effect this result; and that the conductor may also be inserted in the portions of the channels adjacent to or Within the region of the undercut sections or portions by the exertion of a small amount of pressure against the conductor, sufiicient only to cause a slight springing out of the strips of material of the molding between the channels and the grooves 5, 12, 15 and 19 as the case may be.
If Wires of smaller diameter than the width of the channels are employed, it is found that they will remain in the channels by reason of the fact that there are a greater or less number of bends in the wire, some of which get underneath the undercut portions or sections of the channels, the conductors being thereby supported in the channels prior to the time that the cover is secured over the face or top of the molding.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A conductor molding having a channel provided atintervals with relatively short undercut sections and with relatively short slots adjacent to the said undercut sections.
2. A conductor molding having a channel adapted to receive a conductor, the said channel being provided at intervals with an undercut formed upon one side thereof, and grooves formed at intervals in the saidmolding adjacent to the said undercut section or portion whereby a movable strip is formed between the said channel and the said groove.
3. A conductor molding having a channel adapted to receive a conductor or similar article, the said channel being provided with sections or portions, the upper edges of which are separated a distance not less than that of the central or body portion of the said channel and other sections of the said channel being undercut upon one or both sides so that the upper or lip edges of the said sections of the channel are closer together than the distance between the side walls of the body portion of the said channel.
4:. A conductor molding having a channel adapted to receive an electric conductor or similar article, the said channel being provided with sections or portions, the upper edges of which are separated a distance not less than that of the side walls of the central or body portion of the said channeland other sections of the said channel being undercut upon one side, whereby the upper or lip edges of the said sections of the channel are closer together than the side walls of the central or body portion of the said channel, there being grooves in the said molding upon one side of the said channel adjacent to the said undercut sections.
A conductor molding having a plurality of channels therein, the said channels having undercut sections or portions at intervals therein, there being grooves in the said molding adjacent to the sides of the said undercut sections whereby movable strips are formed at intervals between the said channels and the said grooves.
6. A conductor molding having achannel therein to receive a conductor and having grooves at intervals in the said molding ad jacent to the said channel.
