Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JERE G. ICINGSBURY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange," in the county'of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding Type- \Vriters, of which the following is a specification. v
The present invention relates to improvements in combined ty pewriting and adding machines and particularly to such machines wherein are provided two or more adders,
each comprising a plurality of adding wheels and carrying means, and will be hereinafter more particularly described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

In machines of the class to which the pres ent invention relatesyit has been found desirable to provide a plurality of'independent adding mechanisms so that figures may be written in two or more columns and the sum of the numbers in any column instantly ascertained, the numbers being accumulated on the adding mechanism appropriated to that.

Each pawl E Tin moving forward engages by an arm 8, the lower edge of one of the teeth of the ratchet which has been turned, and in its forward position thus locks the ratchet so that it cannot be turned so long as the frame D is in its forward position. If, therefore, thereis a plurality of adders the wheels of all except that where the locking means are pushed back by the pusher are locked and only that coacting at the time with the adder keys can be set to zero. I, therefore, combine with each adder a detent which can be set so as to push'and hold back the frame and its pawl or other locking element of the carrying device.
As shown a rock shaft 1 of each case carries an arm 3 and is provided at the side of the case with a. handle 4, the latter in such a position that when swung to the left as in dotted lines Fig. 1, the arm 3 will be carried against the rear set of links 5 attached to the resetting bars I) and thereby swing the pawls E out of locking posit-ion.
. Any suitable means may be used for holding the arm din place, as by using a spring arm 4 which may be sprung overa stop lug (3, Fig. 3 or away therefrom topermit the arm to be swung past the lug, the said arm being carried to the right when the. adder is brought opposite the operating sector. Thus a shaft S passingthrough all the gears A of all the adders has a shoulder as adapted to engage with pawls j on the gears, and as the shaft is turned, its shoulder will .strike the pawls of the wheels out of osition and successively picking them up will bring all to zero. The shaft S may have a knob a at the end, or may be provided with other means for facilitating its rotation.
\Vithout limiting myself to the precise arrangem utt of parts shown, I claim:.
I. In a'machine of the character described.
the combination with a plurality of adders, each comprising a series of adding wheels and coacti'ng carrying means adapted in one position to lock said adding wheels, a common actuator for all the adders, and a resetting device adapted to 'cotiperatewith all of the adders, of means adjacent each adder for retaining the said locking means thereof in inoperative position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In a machine of the character described, the comhinatitm of a plurality of adders, each comprising a series of adding wheels, and means adapted to lock the adding wheels, an actuator, independently adjustable means on each adder for rendering the locking means of that adder inoperative, and a means common to all of the adders for turning the wheels thereof to zero position.
3. In a machine of'thc character described, the combination of a plurality of adders, each comprising a series of adding wheels and means adapted to lock the adding wheels, an actuatcr, a rock shaft in each adder having an operating-arm at one side of the adder, means connected with said shaft for moving the lockingdevices of the adder to inoperative position, and a means common to all of the adders for turning the wheels thereof to zero position.
4. In a machine ofthe character described, the combination of a plurality of adders. each comprising a series of adding wheels and means adapted to lock said wheels, means on each adder for rendering the loclring devices thereof inoperative. a shaft extending through all of the adders, and means whereby to turn all of the adding wheels to zero position by actuating said shaft after the locking devices have been rendered inoperative.
5. In a machine of the character described. the. combination of a plurality of adders, each comprisiir a series o adding wheels and carrying means adapted to lock the adding whee-ls. means on each adder for releasing the adding wheels thereof from said lock. and a shaft adapted to turn the wheels of all the adders to zero position.
