To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDGAR S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States. residing at. Sharon. in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forged-Steel Fulcrums, of which the following a specification.
The present invention has reference to brake-beams of the forged metal t ype and has for its purpose to construct a brakc-l'ieam wherein the fulcrum member thereof may be securely attached to the compression member i without in any manner distorting the latter,
' or otherwise deflecting thebrake-beam as a whole; and wherein the fulcrum part is secured to the tension member in a more simple amlc fl'ective manner than heretofore proposed.
The arrangementhcrcin set forth is do 1 signed with particular reference to that type of b fake-beam known as the Waycott brake beam, and in the present instance is intended as a further improvement upon the brake.-
beams'of that pattern disclosed in the copending applications Serial Nos. 546,665, M64366 and 546,702 and all'dated March 1, 1910. V
Sumu'iarily stated the invention comprises a reinforcing or bracing clement associated with the fulcrum member and adapted to lie within the trough of the eon'iprcssion member immediately within that portion thereof embraced by the fulcrum, and in that iosition to effectively resist the clamping incident to securing the fulcrum parts thereon; and to withstand thcstram imposed on the strut to theex tent that the compression member will retain its shape.
The invention is shown in its preferred embodiment and modifications thereof, in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is aside clcvation thereof with the compression member in section, Fig. 1 is an end view of the same, Fig. 2 is atop plan view, Fig. 3 disassembled, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified structure, Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. (3 shows the parts disassembled, and; Figs. 7 to 9 illustrate. views corresponding toFigs. 3 to 6 respectively of a' further modified structure.

1 indicates the fulcrum-or strut which in itself comprises a two part forging 2; 3 is the usual compression member of the brakebeam. and 4 the tension member therefor. Said fulcrum sections 2 are each formed with a pinched portion 5 and 6, and intermediate those parts the fulcrum is expanded and slightly deflected for the mounting and operation of the brake lever all as substantially shown in the above mentioned applications. I The ends of the members 2 adjacent the pinched sections are designed with shoulders 7, and to overlie and partly embrace a section of the compression member 3 in substantially that manner shown in 'Figs. 1 and l. fulcrum and the .conu'iression member and relieve. the latter of the strain subjected filler-piece or block 8 which is disposed "witl'r in the trough-0f the compression member immediately within that sectionthereof which is embraced by the engaging ends of the strut 1. The part 8 comprises a head the compression member, and has shoulders 9 which-"lie in against the shoulders 7 of the strut sections. Said filler member is further formed with a web portion 10 which'wheai the fillcris in position lies intermediate.the pinched parts 5 of the fulcrum and in this position afford the necessary means for spacing the fulcrum sections, as will be readily seen from Fig. 1.-

With the several parts assembled in the above described relation, they are secured through the medium of the rivets 12 and 13.
In the arrangement shown in Fi s. 4 to'6 the ends of the fulcrum parts whic engage 'with the compression member are shaped to conform to the compression member, andare split to provide sect-ions 14 which embrace said member. A clamping plate 19 overlies the conn iression n'iember and has its'end portions lt) ecured to the fulcrum upon the pinched portions 20 of the latter. Said clamping plate 19 isformed with two shoulders 21 which lie immediately against the shoulders 17 of the strut sections. The spacing member in this construction consists of the block 22 which in position lies between the pinched sections of the fulcrum. In this relation the several parts are secured by the bolt '23. The connection between the fulcrun'r and the tension n'iembcr is the same as that shown and described of the ahow: figures.
While the illustrations herewith show the invention as applied to'brake-beams made up of angle i'zompression members and T- tension members the same method'may with equal facility also be employed in fitting fulcru'ms or beams of U section, or other form of compression member having a channel open on the side toward the fulcrum.

In a trussed brake-beam, a tension member, afulcrum comprising a two-part forging designed to-conform to and embrace a section of the compression member of "the beam, shoulders formed on said fulcrum parts adjacent the compression member, and a reinforcing member secured to the fulcruni and constructed to he within i218 eni- ,bra ced portion of the compression member and against the shouldersof the'fllcruni parts. whereby to withstand the strain i1nposed upon said compression member by said fulcrum. g

In a trussed brake-beam, atension member, a fulcrum comprising a two-partt'orging, each part whereof is formed with a pinched portion, a shoulder, and a part adapted to embrace the compression member of the beam; and a reinforcing block having shoulders and a web portion, said block adapted to lie within the embraced portion of the compression member with'said shoulders against the shoulders of the fulcrum parts and the web portion intermediate the pinched portions of said fulcrum parts, and providing a spacing element for the latter. 4. In a trussed brake-betcha. a tension member, a fulcrum comprising a two-part forging constructed at one end to embrace the compression member of tee beam, and expanded and bent outwardly at. the other end thereof for securement to the tension member, and a reinforcing :nember lying within the compression 'members and having a part providing a spacing element for the parts of the-fulcrum member;
