Description

A. E. CHERNAOK. MACHINE FOR COVERING FLEXIBLE TUBING.
APPLICATION FILED APEA, 1910.

ABRAHAM E. CHERNACK, OF BOSTON, BTASSACHUEETTS.
MACHINE FOR CGVERING FLEXIBLE TUBING.
Application filed April To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Aerial-mar E. CHER- XACK. a subject of the l hnperor of Russia. residing in the city of Boston. in the count of Suffolk. in the State of llIflSSflCllllSGtl'S, have invented a certain ncw and useful Improvement in hlachines for Covering;- Flexible Tubing. of which the tollowing a specification.
My invention relates to machines of various types adapted to cover flexible tubing or conduits, and oneot' the main objects of my invention is to provide simple and etlieient means for maintaining the tubing open or expanded to its .t'ull diameter while it is being; covered or wrapped.
My invention also comprises various other novel features as will more fully appear from the drawings and snbjoined description.
ln'the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a broken side elevation of a machine'in' is embodied in one 7 3 1y improved mandrel; nsversc vertical section detail: Fig. 5 is a vertical sec angles thereto; and Fig. ('3 is a which my invention form; .llig. 2 a plan of the same; Fig. is an elevation of n Fig. 4 is a broken tra ot a iuodilied tion at. right transverse section on a larger scale ot a portion of Fig. l.
In machines for covering collapsible tubing or conduits it is at present the custfnnar practice in order to maintain the tubing eX- panded to sl ape while being wrapped. to provide! a core throughout the length 01 the tubing to be covered and Feed both together through the covering machine. afterward withdrawing the core. This practice is attended with many tilitlicnltics and inconveniences and no considerable continuous length ot tubing can be so made by reason of the friction bctweei': the core and tubin which ma hes the withdrawal of the core pract icall v impossible.
One of the principal features of the pres cut invention is the provision of means .t'er maintaining a stationary mandrelwithin the tubing. over which the latter is passed dur ing' the process of wrapping or covering. As embodied in the machine shown in Figs. 1 to 3 this mandrel is given the form shown in Fig. 23 and comprises the mandrel proper 5 and the mandrel rod 4cof much smaller diameter and booked at one end, the Whole being highly polished to afford. as smooth a l l l l l l t l l l t l l Specification of Letters Patent.

surface as possible. he hooked end of the mandrel rod is shaped to the. curve of the feed wheel (3 and lies in ie groove oi. the latter. while the body of the rod extends through the hollow spimtlle 13, the mandrel proper 5 being located at the point at which the tubing is wrapped by the tape reels 1? and 18.
The tubing coming from any suitable source of supply. tor instance the reel 1 carried below the table oi the frame it. is passed. up and over the idler i to the drel rod. over the hooked end of wbi slipped. A suitable gripping sorta-0e. is vided t'or tl instance. by that the tubing. being held firmly a the :l'eed wheel by the tension fr m t P 1c groove of t re feed wheel (for takeup, referred to later; e. slipped over the mandrel rod by reason of the greater friction between the surface of the feed wheel and the tubing; than exists between the inner face of the tubing. and the mandrel rod. The hooked curl of the, red being held to the teed wheel by the tension of the take-up thus serves as an. aluitment; or shouldcr to bear against the wheel through the seamless tubing; itselt and thrrebf. hold the mandrel against. longitudinal lllOr'Gllltfiltand the tubiny is continuously slipped over the latter \vitl'iout; displ g the some. "i t hile passing from the .l (S to the tape reels 1? and may be coated with any u. compound, has ance an insulating (,t nd maintained fluid in a steam-incketed kettle 5). It. grooved disk 10 revolving in this l ttle takes up the cone pound and coals lower portion at the tubing, which in the groove. while from the broad lfilll'filitty oi. the dish stillicient compound is removed by the taper 12 to cover the uppei urface of the tubing. The wiper t rumor any excess eenuionnd and retnr the kettle 9.
it will it) serves also as a rod and tubing,
a a n2 proper position with rel t en to the covering mechanism and the hollow spindle.
Reaching the covering mechanism, here shown as tape reels 17 and 18, the tubing is opened to full size by the mandrel proper 5 which is made substantially the full inthe tubing. The tape 18 serve to cover the tubing support for the and helps to ternal diameter of wheels 17 and I with a double layer of paper cemented to.-
reel if desired. The speed of both take-up .tionless nmnldrel rod. mains stationary, hooked over the feedpul gether and to the tubing by from kettle 9, thereby lapsible tubing into a, relatively stiff tubing of the require internal diameter. The tape reels or bobbing l7 and 18 are mounted on spindles carried by the arm 16 secured to the hollow spindle 13 the latter being driven in suitable bearings, by the pulley 15 (with the usual idler 14: adjacent). The tension of the tape reels may be regulated by the friction springs 19 and 20.
the compound 7 The covered tubing passes through thehollow spindle 13 to theytake-up wheel 27, for which may be substituted an ordinary wheel 27 and feed wheel 6 maybe made uniform, in any suitable way. rangement of gearing fort this purpose is shown. The worm 21, mounted on the end of the hollow spindle 13 engages with a worm gear 22 on the shaft 28, on which is fixed a gear 23 which meshes with a change gear Wheel 2% fast on. the spindle of which is mounted the gear 25 whichtin turn meshes with gear 26 of the take-up \wheel 27. On the shaft 28 of the worm wheel 22 is fixed 'a bevel gear 32 which through bevel gears .33 and 35 at} opposite ends of the longitudinal spindlej 36 drives bevelipinion 34 on the end of he transverse spindle 37, The change speed. gear 38 at the {inner end of this spindle drives the wheel Githrough pin-v vions 39 and 40: By suitably proportioning the elements 10f this transmission gearing the speed of the take-up may be made to exactly equal the speed of the feed wheel 6, a desirable condition for the best operation of the machine; The disk 10 in the kettle 9 may also be driven by the worin 21 through a belt 42 extending between pulleys 30 and 31- mounted on the shafts 28\ and 29 respectively. i l
The operation of the machine take-up wheel 27 insures a sufficient: frictional engagement of the tubing by the feed wheel 6.to secure a positive delivery by the latter. The tubing is thus constantly slipped over the thin, polished and practically fricwhile the latter rele y Passing over disk 10 thetubing is coated with a suitable insnla tin'g compound, although obviously this may nptbe desired in some instances and may accordingly be omitted. I
. ing to its full diameter and wh le so expandt ed it is wrapped 7 ing now wound and by the tape reels which are revolved around the tubing the arm 16 mounted on. the rotary sleeve {13. ,The tubrelatively stifi, is read ily drawn off by the take-up wheel 27, being maintained out of contact with the sleeve 1.3
by the extension of the mandrel rod and converting the col duits for electric A simple ar- 4 Y mandrel proper 5 is readily understood. i'Ihe tension maintained by The mandrel o expands the tub-- thus avoiding any undesirable twist which might be imparted thereto were it allowed to contact with the revolving sleeve.
. The machine described is particularly adapted to the manufacture of flexible conwires, but it can readily be adapted to "any conduit manufacture in which a solid core is required to maintain a collapsible tube in shape'during covering, for instance for double or multiple hose, the
tape reels of the\present machlne being replaced by looms, and the with a suitable cementing and waterproofing compound. Obviously furthermore the mandrel rod may be given other forms than that shown in Figs.- 1 to 3. Thus in Figs. 4 and 5 the mandrel 5 is connected by a short and thin neck portion a: to an enlarged portion or shdulder yand a pair of grooved rollers R arranged to embrace the neck portion w, the roll rs approaching each other so closely that 5th shoulder y cannot pass between the rolls.\ n each side of the groove the rollers 'ar provided with gripp'ng means, for in ance needle teeth 1" wh'ch engage the flatt ned slack 0f the tubing ahd serve to feed he latter to the mandrel. Assuming the aw eelfi'of Fi to 3 to be a plain pulley, the mandre of Figs. k5 would be arrang d between the kettle 9 and the tape reels lit- 18 and so placed that the is lo'cate'd at the point where the tape lfreels wind the covering on the conduit. i X
