HENRY C. LANGLOIS, OF THUNDER BUTTE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
AUXILIARY HANDLE FOR FORKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Application filed January 4, 1910. Serial No. 536,276.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. LANGLOIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Thunder Butte, in the county of Schnasse and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Handles for Forks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to auxiliary handles for pitch forks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a pivoted handle and means for readily connecting said handle to the ordinary handle of a pitch fork to provide a more convenient means of operating the fork.
Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary handle for a pitch fork which can be readily connected to the rigid handle of the fork at any desired distance upon the handle of the fork and which will facilitate the operation of the fork in carrying hay or in pitching the same.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pitch fork having a handle made in accordance with my invention connected thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of my detachable handle. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a pitch fork and 2 the ordinary handle thereof. My auxiliary handle comprises a pair of curved clamp members 3 pivotally mounted at 4 within a block 5 having extended feet 6, said feet being curved, as at 7, upon their undersides to bear upon the curved surface of the fork handle 2. The curved clamp members 3 are provided with an adjusting bolt 8 which passes through the enlarged lugs 9 and is provided with a nut 10 by means of which the clampv members 8 may be adjusted quickly to secure the auxiliary handle to the pitch fork handle. Pivotally mounted upon a removable bolt 11 extending through the block 5 are the auxiliary handle members 12, said bolt 11 being provided with a nut 13 which can be readily removed for detaching the handle members 12. A bolt 14 extends through the handle members near their outer ends and is provided with a nut 15. A wooden hand hold 16 is disposed between the handle members 12, and the bolt 14 extends through said hand hold, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the auxiliary handle can be quickly connected to the handle of a pitch fork, shovel, spade or similar tool, and when the nut 8 is turned. up against the lugs 9 of the clamp members, the auxiliary handle is firmly held at the required position to permit the fork or other implement to be used with facility. The handle members 12 being pivoted to the block 5 permit an easy action of the fork.
My invention is of simple construction, can be produced at low cost, can be quickly attached to any implement of the character referred to and can be readily adjusted on the rigid handle of the implement.
I claim A detachable auxiliary handle comprising a block having a concave under surface and provided with a transverse recess extending upwardly from the concave surface and intermediate the ends thereof and also provided with a passage parallel with the recess and located above the same, oppositely-disposed clamping members having their upper ends of such width as to extend into the recess of the block, pivots passing horizontally through the block and upper ends of the said members to connect the-latter with the block, said pivots being disposed transversely to the recess in the block, means for drawing the lower ends of the members together for clamping the same on a handle, a grip handle disposed above the block, members secured to the grip handle and having their lower ends disposed at opposite sides of the block, and a bolt extending through the passage of the block and through the lower ends of the members of the grip handle for pivotally connecting the latter to the block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. LANGLOIS.
