Description
L. B; NICHOLSON. CUTTING BOARD ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 27, 1910.

CUTTING-BOARD ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 27, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LiNWooD B. NICHOL- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dickerson, in the county of Montgomery, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting- Board Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper hangers tools and has special reference to an attachment intended to be applied to a cutting board, the device being in the nature of an attachment for connecting a paper hangers straight edge to a cutting board in such manner that it may be moved into and manipulated in operative position on the board or supported out. of the way when not in use.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting a straight edge as above described.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinaerative position, a portion of the table being shown. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the invention in operative position. Fig. t is a section on the line &- t of Fig. 3.
The numeral 10 indicates a cutting board such as is commonly used by paper hangers and this board is supported in any preferred manner as by legs one of which is indicated at 11. On the front edge of the board 10 and near the right hand end thereof is indicated a socket plate 12 whereon is formed a boss 13 having a suitable pivot pin receiving opening therein. The upper face of the boss 13 lies in depressed relation to the upper edge of the plate 12 so that the face of the plate 12 near its top forms a shoulder in connection with the upper face of said boss as can be clearly seen by reference to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Serial No. 569,194.
Fig. 4E. Removably engaged in the opening in the boss 13 is a pivot pin 14 whereon is a collar 15 rabbeted as at 16, the rabbeted portion being of such dimensions that when the collar rests on top of the boss 13 the rabbet Will engage the shoulder at the upper edge of the plate 12 and prevent the pin 14 from turning. Extending upwardly and laterally along the front edge of the board 10 from this collar is an arm 17 on the extremity of which is a ball 18. This ball is so located that it lies just in front of the edge of the board and slightly spaced above the same when the parts are assembled.
At 19 and 20 are indicated upper and lower links respectively. Each of these links has near one end a depressed portion 21 which forms a socket for the reception of a portion of the ball 18. Near the ball the link 20 is provided with an upstanding screw 22 which passes through the link 19 and carries on its upper end a thumb nut- 23.
At 24 is indicated a straight edge of the ordinary kind. On the right hand end of this straight edge is provided a bracket 25 which is secured to the straight edge by suitable screws. This bracket 25 is provided with an extending car 26 having projecting pins 27 formed thereon.
The links 19 and 20 are each provided with a suitable opening to receive a pin 27 and near this end of the links the lower link 20 is provided with an upstanding screw 28 which passes through the upper link and has upon its upper end a thumb nut 29. Secured to the leg 11 is a supporting bracket 30.
It will be noted that the plate 12 is at all times secured to the board 10 but that the pin 14 can be withdrawn at will. In using the device the board is set up in the ordinary manner and the pin 14; inserted in the opening in the boss 13. The pin is then rotated until the rabbet 16 engages the shoulder of the plate 12. The straight edge may then be placed upon the table in any desired position, the ball and socket joint formed by the members 18 and 21 permitting the links 19 and 20 to be swung in over the table or moved out toward the edges while the oint formed between the links and the ear 26 permits the straight edge to be positioned parallel or at an angle to the front edge of the table as may be desired. The straight edge is then used in the ordinary manner.
When it is desired to paste the paper after trimming or to use the board for any other I bracket and having an end extending latpurpose than trimming it is merely necessary to swing the parts out and twist the straight edge until the edge near the front of the table lies beneath, this operation being permitted by the ball and socket joint before noted. The free edge is then dropped down and the free end will engage in the bracket while the end attached to the arm 17 will assume the posit-ion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
There has thus been provided a simple and etlicient device of the kind described and fo the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A cutting board attachment including a bracket adapted to be secured to a cutting board, said bracket being provided with a pin receiving boss, an arm having a pin thereon adapted for reception in said boss, coacting stop means on said arm and bracket to prevent rotation of the pin in the boss, said coacting stop means being operative when the pin is fully inserted, a second bracket adapted for attachment to a straight edge, and a link connection having one end pivoted to the straight edge bracketand the other end universally jointed to the arm.
2. A cutting board attachment including a bracket adapted to be secured to a cutting board, an arm removably carried by said erally from its body, a ball formed on said end, a pair of link members each having a depression at one end into which aportion of said ball fits, a clamp screw for drawing the ball engaging ends of said link members together, pivot means at the other ends of said link members, and a straight edge attaching device carried by said pivot means.
3. A cutting board attachment including a bracket adapted to be secured to a cutting board, an arm removably carried by said bracket and having an end extending lat-- erally from its body, said end being provided with a ball, a pair of link members each having a depression at one end into which a portion of said ball fits, a clamp screw for drawing the ball engaging ends of said members together, a bracket adapted for attachment to a straight edge, an ear projecting from said bracket, pivot pins on said ear and extending through respective link members, and a second clamp screw connecting the ends of said link members adjacent said ear.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LINXVOOD B. NICHOLSON.
