MACHINE FOR MAKING CDNCRETE BUILDING-BLOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
4 Application filed September 4, 1906. Serial 1 10. 333,067.
To ill whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoaon 3V. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain ne and useful Improvements in lvlachines for Making Concrete Buildinglllocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact. description of the inveutiom which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention has reference more particularly to apparatus for packing concrete into molds for forming concrete building blocks or stone, and for supplying concrete to the mold.
The object of my invention is to provide a maeniue that will thoroughly tamp the concrete and press it into all parts of the n'iold;------aud a further object is to supply concrete to the mold in suitable quantities to be thoroughly pressed into the mold by the tamping device.
' In the accompanying drawings, in which similar referencecharacters indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front \ltw ot' a machine embodying my improve-' mcuts showing" the tamping devices in operation: Fig. 2 a vrt'ical cross sectionalview on the line 2-2 of Fig. -1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 3 a front yicw of the machine showing the tampiu r devices raised to the inoperative ptmition; Fig. 4 a vertical sectional View of the mold and feeding devices which supply concrete to the mold; Fig. a vertical sectional view on the line 5-4) of Fig. i looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. (i a view on the line ----(i of Fig. 5 looking; as imlieatml by the arrow; Fig. 7 a View on the line T of Fig. -l looking as indi cated by tl arrow; Fig- S a view on the. line 8 8 of Fig. 3 looking as indicated by the arrow showing a bottom view of the tamper;
a d Fig. 5! is a side and bottom .view of a tamper which may be used for tampiug' the concrete block of diilerent construction. from that shown in the preceding figures.
The "frame of this machine, which is constructed and bracedv to withstand considev able vibration is provided with two pairs of vertical timbers 1, each pair being suitably spaced toit'urnish a guide way for the frame 2, which travels therebetween. These til hers I are suitably connected at their top and to the adjacent framework 3 upon which are carried parts which operate the taniping devices.
The frame 2 which carries the camping devices and which as has been stated, is vertically movable in the pairs of vertical tim- '?at-ented Jan. 1?, MEL
hers 1 consists of the blocks 4 which are I suitably distanced and have the parallel strips secured'thercon, as shown, near the top and bottom thereof which extend beyond said blocks and engage the Vertical timbers l. These strips 5 are provided with the connecting strips 6 which engage the inner sides of the timbers 1 so as to prevent longitudinal shifting of the said "frame and.
permit vertical movement thereof. This framework designed to carry the taniping devices which operate to tainp the concrete into the mold 7 located directly theroheneath, which said mold may be of any desired construction.
As is shown, the concrete blocks are usually cored as shown at 8 Fig. 3 of the drawings providing the cores 9 which may be arranged in any suitable manner or operated so as to extend in the mold so as to provide the concrete block formed therein with suitable openings. In the acoon'ipanying drawings, l have shown a mold which is provided with five cores 9 which extend vertically in the mold and are spaced an equal distance apart throughout the length of the mold.
The taiiping device carried by the movable frame 2 comprises a shaft 10 which extends horizontally through said frame and is journaled in' the bearings 11 secured to the hloclts 4;. Upon this shaft are'provided six eccentric disks 12 which are preferably arranged at thirty degree intervals around the shaft so'that the projectionof the said disks will be distributed throughout the revolution of the shaft. These eccentric disks are provided with the usual yokes 13 encircling the same which are pivotally conncctcd by means or" the short shafts 14 as at it with the crossheads 16. These cross heads are arranged to be vertically inovahle and extend 'from side to side of the frame 2 and are provided with the arms 1'? extendiug laterally from said cross heads, through which said projecting parts are p: ssed the rods 18, which are secured against movement by the set screws 19 or any other suitable means. The ends of these rods pass unit through openings guide the cross head accurately in its vertical reciprocation, and said rods are carried by the laterally projecting arms 17 at the side as aforesaid so as to be out of the plane of movement of the eccentrics 12. The cross heads 16 are provided with the depending parts 20 which are bored at their lower ends to receive the shank of the tamp ing bars 21 which are secured therein by means of set screwsor in any other desired manner. These tamping bars are arranged to operate in the mold located therebcneath and differ in form according to the sizc of the mold and the kind of core used therein. The striking faces of the camping bars, irrespective of the size or form, have the edges beveled as shown at (34 to diminish the abrupt striking surface thereof to permit the hammer being driven into the loose concrete, and also to provide inclined or beveled faces for forcing the concrete laterally from the line of direction of the move ment of the tamping bars into all parts of the mold.
It is necessary that the lower surface of the tamping bars be capable of operating in I the interior of the mold near the bottom 'in close proximity to the adjacent thereof so as to press the concrete into the bottom of the mold, and for this reason the tamping bars are cut away to avoid the cores in the mold and provide projecting portions which may extend intermediate of the cores and walls of the mold to the bottom of the mold. In the present instance, .wherein a number of small vertical rectangular cores are used, the tamping bars are constructed as shown in Fig. 8 so that the portion 23 operates between the cores and the portions 24 intermediate of the cores and walls of the mold, the said portions 24 extending laterally a suitable distance so as to operate tamping bars so as to subject all the concrete in the mold to the pounding thereof. As is ap' parent, it is necessary that the tamping devices be capable of vertical movement during operation so that as themold fills and the concrete is packed therein the tamping device-may rise, and it is alsonecessary that they be adapted to be raised from the mold when not in operation. For this purpose,
there is provided a drive shaft 25 extending longitudinally across the top of the frame which carries the sleeve or drum 26 loosely thereon directly above the' frame 2. This frame is connected to the said sleeve by means of the wire cables 27 or any other suitable flexible meanswhich areconnected 'ith the sleeve or drum 26 so as to wrap and unwrap thereon in the movement of said sleeve for raising and lowering the movable For operating the s eeve 26. there is provided at one end thereof a friction disk 28 in the strips 5 so as to 1 which is fixed on the shaft- 25 and adapted to engage the broad end of the sleeve. Atthe opposite end of said. sleeve is provided a friction disk 29 which is movable lengthwisc of said shaft, the said disk being feathered on the said shaft to cause the said disk to rotate with the shaft. Adjacent the loose friction disk 29 and secured on the shaft is a collar 30, and an inverted bifurcated wedge member 81 is carried between said collar 30 and the friction disk :29, the prongs of which said wedge member straddle the shaft and are arranged when forced downwardly to bear against the collar 30 and press the friction disk 29 against the large end of the sleeve or drum 26 so as to lock the sleeve between the friction disks 28 and 29 to rotate with the shaft. This wedge member 31 is carriedon the rod which is pivoted on the bracket 33 on one side of the frame, and the other end of said rod extends to the oppositeside of the frame where it is connected by means of the link 34, the pivoted lever 35 and rod 3b with the foot lever 37, whereby the operator at the front of the machine can control the operation of the coiling sleeve. The arms or prongs of this wedge converge down- \vardly/ so that the friction clutch is thrown into engagement by the downward movement thereof and the spring 38 is provided, whi'c'h is connected near the free end of the lever 37 and to the supporting frame soas to normally draw the wedge 31 downwardly and lock the sleeve 26 to move with the shaft. By means of, the wedge applied as hereinbefore described, the sleeve is caused to be impinged to cause it to be revolved with the drive shaft to raise the movable frame, and then the wedge is moved to release such impingement but instead of entirely releasing said impingement,1.21s the movable frame descends the operator allows a slight in'ipingement, suflicient to retard the downward movement of-the movable frame to prevent its descending violently.
()n the outer end of the shaft 25 is loosely mounted a pulley which is driven by the belt 39 and said pulley is provided with a sleeve 4-0 which has a clutch lug thereon adapted to engage the fixed clutch member K on the frame,for shifting the clutch of the :belt pulleyi inand out of engagement with the clutch 41 on the shaft, and the pulley is driven in a direction to operatethe shaft to wind the cable27 on the sleeve 25;
The long arm +15 of the shifting lever extends as shown and is arranged to be engagediby the projection shown by dotted lines'at tfi carriedion the strip 5 of the movthe pulley thrown out of engagement with the shaft, the shaft ceases to turn and the tampmg devices to operate, 'lhe section 57, the compartment of which is designed to .hold a little more than half enough concrete .the inoperative position,
to tilt the mold.- is then moved back. and receives a charge of et'vnerete from the magazinc and is then moved forward and dis charged into the mold, and the tamplng devices brought into ope-ratioi't as before described. As the supply of concrete is more than snllieient to fill the mold, a portion of it will extend above the top of the mold and be tamped solidly in. the compartment of the section 57. hen the blocl; is tampcd sutliciently, the tamping devieesare raised to as before described,
and the section 5? moved bael: to register with the discharge opening; of the'hopper in which movement the edge of the frontof the compartment shears oil the surplus concrete extending above the mold, making the top of the block perfectly level and insuring a constrtu'tion of blocks of uniform thickness. 4
\Vhile l have shown a mold for constructing eonerete blocks of acertain form and style, I wish it understood that any suitable concrete block mold. may be used. \Vhen molds adapted to form blocks of different styles are employed the tampers 91 which, as has been hereinbefore mentioned, are "detachable, are detached and tampers suitable for that style of mold attached to the arms of the cross heads. For instance, when a mold. employt-al which forms concrete blocks with long openings as shown by dotted lmes'at in Fig. 3, it will be necessary at plaer t provide tampers such as shown in Fig. 9 to straddle the core and' tamp the concrete on each side thereof. The
various other. kinds of cores which are commonly employed in constructing these blocks will require tampers varying in shape for taniping' the concrete around said cores.
