To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nowata, in the county of Nowata, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a machine for grading roadways, leveling land and filling up ruts and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of machine for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means of supporting the scraper common in machines of this type.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved form of frame for machines of this character.
With the above and other objects-in view the invention consists in general of an improved form of frame provided with novel supporting means for the scraper and with an improved adjusting mechanism for said scraper.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.

Fig. 6 is a detail perspec tive showing the connection between the front and rear portions of the frame.
The frame of the scraper consists of several members whereof that indicated at 10 may be said to constitute the main frame member. This member comprises a fiat plate broadened at the rear end and reduced in width at the forward end. In order to support the rear end of the member 10 there is provided a sled comprising a body 11 having a bolster plate 12 secured thereto adj acent the rear end thereof, and this bolster plate and the frame member 10 are provided with suitable openings to receive a king bolt 13. The sled is equipped with the usual spaced runners 1 1 and these runners project slightly above the body and are provided with rabbets 15 wherein are mounted braces 16, the forward brace resting against the under side of the member 10 and forming a chafing piece. Projecting forwardly from the body 11 is a lug 17 to which is connected one end of a link 18, the opposite end of said link being connected to one arm of a bell crank lever 19, the said arm being arranged to extend substantially longitudinal of the frame member 10. This bell crank lever is pivoted at its angle to the under side of the frame member 10. Upon the frame member 10 is secured a quadrant 20 and pivoted to coact with this quadrant is a latch lever 21 the lower end of which is connected by a link 22 with the other arm of the bell crank lever 19, the last mentioned arm extending transversely of the frame member 10 and projecting beyond the side thereof. By means of this construction as the latch lever 21 is moved forward or backward the sled is caused to rotate around the king bolt 13 as a center and the lever 21 thus serves as a steering lever.
Upon the forward end of the frame member 10 is a pivot block 23 having an angled portion 24 which lies on top of the forward end of said frame member while the body of the block 23 lies at the side thereof. This portion 24 is provided with a lip 25 so that between this lip 25 and the body of the block 23 there is formed a recess for purposes hereinafter to be described. The body of the block 23 is further provided with asuitable perforation 26 wherein is held a pivot bolt 27. Upon this pivot bolt 27 is mounted a trunnion block 28 provided with a pair of spaced ears 29 having opposed apertures 30 formed therein, said apertures being arranged at right angles to the axis of the bolt 27. The rear end of this trunnion block 28 provided with a lip 31 which, when the parts are assembled, fits beneath the lip 25 for the purpose of assisting in retaining the trunnion block in alinement relative to the frame member 10.
At 32 is a goose neck beam which is provided with a reduced end 33 which is held in the apertures in the trunnion block 28. Upon this goose neck beam is mounted a ioo - ward it raises the goose neck 32 and with it the forward end of the trunnion block 28.
It is also to be observed that by reason of Y the loose jointed connection the goose neck 32 is permitted a certain amount of lateral swinging movement relative to the trunnion block 28.
The front truck of the device comprises an axle 38 whereon are mounted wheels 39 and attached to this axle by means of braces 40 is a draft beam 41 provided at its forward end with a clevis 42 for the purpose of attaching draft animals and at its rearward end with a clevis 43 for the purpose of attaching the draft beam to the forward end of the goose neck 32, both the clevis 43 and the forward end of said goose neck being perforated to receive a bolt 44 in order to attach the device. Secured to the forward end of the goose neck 32 is a bracket 45 which is provided with a journal portion 46 adapted to fit a recess 47 formed in the axle 38. This journal portion 46 is so arranged. that it lies behind the axis of the bolt 44 when the front truck is in position. By means of this construction the front truck is connected rigidly to the goose neck At 48 is indicated a scraper blade having its forward face concaved in the usual manner, and attached to the rear of this scraper blade about one-third of the way from one end is a bracket 49 whereon is formed a pair of spaced ears 50 having opposed perforations 51. The swinging block 28 has the ears thereof so arranged that one of the ears 50 is held between the ears of said block while the other ear 50 lies immediately beneath the lower ear of the block, the ears of the block and the bracket 49 thus interdigitating, and the reduced portion 33 serving as a pivot pin to secure them from accidental separation. Beneath the lower ear 50 the reduced portion 33 of the goose neck is provided with a suitable nut 51 to retain the parts in position.
By means of this construction it will be observed that the scraper blade 48 may be swung around the portion 33 as a pivot and in order to hold it in adjusted position there is mounted adjacent one end of the scraper blade a bracket 51 having a projecting perforated ear 52. Upon the frame member 10 is a guide 53 and centrally of this guide suitable apertures are formed in the guide and the frame member for the reception of an adjusting pin 54. At 55 is an adjusting lever which is provided at its inner end with a series of spaced perforations 56 and at its outer end with a perforation 57 adapted to receive a bolt 58 which passes through the ear By means of this construction the angle of the scraper blade with. reference to the frame member 10 may be adjusted, it being simply necessary to change the position of the pm 54 from one of the apertures 56 to such In the operation of the device draft ani mals are hitched to the draft clevis and the driver takes position on the seat 60. The blade 48 is adjusted for angled relation to the frame member 10 in the manner previously described and the driver regulates the vertical angle of the blade by means of the lever 36, the forward end of the frame member 10 raising or lowering so that the scraper blade contacts with the ground in whatever position it may be adjusted up to the point at which the lever is so raised that the blade is lifted entirely free from the ground. The team is then started and by means of the lever 21 the driver guides the scraper in such direction as he desires.
There has thus been provided a simpleand efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a road scraper, a main frame member, a block pivoted to the forward end of said member for movement in a vertical plane, a front frame member swingingly supported in said block, a latch lever mounted on one of said frame members to move in a vertical plane, a scraper blade pivotally mounted in said block on the front frame member, a brace connecting said scraper blade and the main frame member, and means to vary the effective length of the brace and change the angle of the scraper blade relative to said main frame member.
2. In a road scraper, a main frame member, a block pivoted to the forward end of said member for movement in a vertical plane, a front frame member swingingly supported in said block, a latch lever mounted on one of said frame members to move in a vertical plane, a scraper blade pivotally mounted in said block on the front frame member, a brace connecting said scraper,
blade and the main frame member, a truck supporting the rear end of the main frame member, guide means to Vary the lateral angle between said truck and the main frame member, and a truck rigidly attached to 1 the forward end of the front frame member and provided with means for attaching draft animals.
