AARON ROSENSGN, OF AMBRIDGE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FAN ATTACHMENT FUR CHAIRS.
Application filed June '7, 1910.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON RosnNsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ambridge, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F an Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fan attachments for cl airs, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a chair with a revoluble fan and means for transmitting a rotary movement to the fan from an oscillatory movement of a chair equipped with the fan, second, to provide a fan attachment that can be easily and quickly connected to the side of a chair to cause a circulation of air in proximity to the head of the occupant of the chair when the chair is oscillated or rocked, third, to provide a fan attachment that is applicable to various types of rocking chairs, and fourth, to furnish a rocking chair with a fan attachment that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient for the purposes for which it is in tended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein z Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking chair provided with the fan attachment, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the attachment, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of the same, and Fig. a is an enlarged elevation of a part of the actuating shaft of the attachment.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a bearing having a central vertical opening 2, the walls of which are provided with spiral threads or rifling, the object of which will presently appear. The bearing 1 is provided with apertured lugs 3 adapted to be secured by screws or other fastening means 1 to the side of a chair 5, preferably the arm 6 thereof.
Mounted upon the upper end of the bearing 1 is a vertical tubular casing 7 and se cured in the upper end of the casing 7, preferably by screw threads 8 is a sleeve 9 for a bracket 10 provided with a horizontal bearing 11 at right angles to the sleeve 9.
Joiirnaled in the sleeve 9 is a vertical Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 10, 1911.
Serial No. 585,520.
shaft 12 having a spirally threaded portion 13 rotatably mounted in the opening 2 of the bearing 1, and the lower end of the shaft 12 is bifurcated to provide arms 1 1 having mounted therein a pin 15. Revolubly mounted upon the pin 15 is a spherical body or ball 16. The bifurcated end of the shaft 12 is rotatably mounted in a recess 17 provided therefor in an oblong weight or body 18, the lower end of said shaft being capable of rotation within the recess 17, while the spherical body 16 reduces the friction between the lower end of the shaft 12 and the body 18 to a minimum.
Slidably mounted upon the upper end of the shaft 12 by a key 19 and adapted to retate with said shaft is a horizontal beveled gear wheel 20 meshing with a similar gear wheel 21 mounted upon the end of a shaft 22, journaled in the bearing 11. The opposite end of the shaft 22 is provided with a rectangular frame 23 supporting a fan blade 2st.
The weight or body 18 normally remains upon the floor or support 25 of the chair 5, and as the bearing 1' is fixed relatively to the chair 5, an oscillatory or rocking movementof the chair 5 will raise and lower the bearing 1, and as the lower end of the shaft 12 can move in the weight or body 18, a rotary movement will be imparted to said shaft, and through the medium of the gear wheels 20 and 21 the shaft 22 will be rotated in the bezring 11, thus revolving the fan blade 2% and causing the same to circulate air in the vicinity of the chair 5.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the fan attachment will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the struetural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In a fan attachment for chairs, the combination with a rocking chair, of a bearing secured to the side of said chair, said bearing having a spirally threaded opening formed therein, a tubular casing mounted upon said bearing, a sleeve mounted in the upper end of said casing, a bracket carried by said sleeve, a shaft journaled in said bracket at right angles to said sleeve, a frame carried by one end of said shaft; a fan blade mounted in said frame, a beveled gear wheel carried by the opposite end of said shaft, a vertical shaft revolubly mounted in said sleeve, a beveled gear Wheel slidably mounted upon the upper end of said shaft and meshing with the first mentioned beveled gear Wheel, said shaft havinga portion thereof spirally threaded to engage 1n the opening of said bearing and rotated by a movement of said bearing, and means for anchoring the lower end of said shaft upon the floor or support of said chair, said means including an 0blong Weight having a recess formed therein, i
and a spherical body rotatably mounted in the lower end of said shaft and adapted to engage the bottom of said recess, substan tially as, and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of tWo witnesses.
AARON ROSENSON.
