Specifica tion of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may conccrmi Be it known that I, TRUMAN G. PADDACK, a citizen of the United States, residing' in the city of IVyOming, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-halachines for Severing Soft and Pliable Mate rial, of which the following is a full,.clear, and exact description, reference being had to i the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
lll/Iy invention relates to cutting machines in which rapidly revolving cutting or sliding disks or saws are provided in connection with a table upon which the material to be cut is fed to the disks, and the especial object of my invention is to provide a machine in which very soft carded or garneted material such as cotton wadding and cotton batting may be readily and easily severed into strips. Such material is ordinarily very difficult to sever when fed to a rapidly revolving disk, knife or saw, because the fibers is alniost immediately packed in around the slot in the table and prevents the cutting disk from doing its work, nor is it possibleto aceol'njiilish the result by feeding the material between rollers, one of which is provided with a cutting edge, either with or without a corresponding groove in the other roller to receive the cutting edge. With suoli constructions the fibers accumulate under the edge of the knife and prevent a proper severance. I overcome this difficulty by the construction hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed, in which a thin plate is provided slotted to embrace the cutting edge of the disk, and with free spacer below the plate to prevent the accumulation of fibers.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of my improved machine broken away in part, and illustrating two cutting disks. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the lines 2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the machine with a section of the cutting edge of the cutting disk taken on lines 8, 3 of Fig. 2.
l is the table of the machine supported on usual standii ds 5, 5, at convenient height, and upon this table is mounted the shaft 6 provided with the usual journal bearings 7, 7, the shaft being driven at a high rate of speed by the driving pulley 8, or in any other convenient way from suitable power. Upon l l l this shaft cutting disks 9, 9, of any desired number, are secured by the hubs 10, 10, and `set screws 11, l1 or in any other convenient way, and the lower edge of the disks ride in slots 12, in the table, the walls of the slots being cut to spread out downwardly as shown, in order to prevent the accumulation of lint and fibers from the material cut which would tend to retard and dull the action of the cutting disks.
13 is a block or bar which is secured across the table from side to side immediately in front of the the feeding side, and the disks are rotated from right to leftor toward ther operator from above downward. Mounted on this block 13, is a thin plate 14, one for each cutting disk. This plate is provided with a narrow V-shapedV slot 15 to embrace the beveled edge 16 of the cutting disk, and the side edges of the slot in the plate are formed to lit very closely to this beveled edge without contacting therewith. The block 13 is of such a height that there will be ample clearance space between the plate and the top surface of the table to prevent the accumulation of fiber between the plate and the table, and the plate extends inwardly at such an angle to the cutting edge of the disk, that a proper shearing cut will be given the material as it is fed to the cutter.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine of the character specified, the combination with a feed table upon which the material to be cut is fed, said table provided with a narrow slot, and a cutting disk mounted above the table surface to rotate thereon, with the edge of the disk projecting into said slot, of ma plate slotted to embrace the cutting edge" of the disk, mounted in a plane parallel with and above the surface plane of the table, and over which plate the material to be cut is fed to the knife.
2. In a machine of the character specified, the combination with a feed table upon which the material to be cut is fed, said table provided with a narrow slot and a cutting disk mounted above the table si'lrfaee to rotate thereon with the edge of the disk projecting into said slot, of a plate slotted to embrace. the cutting edge of the disk, mounted in a plane parallel with and above the surface plane of the table, and over which plate cutting disks upon the material to be cut is fed to the knife, said plate being presented to the cutting edge at an angle to the radial lines of the disk to give a shearing cut.

In a machine of the character speciiied, the combination with a feed table upon which the material to be cut is fed, said table provided with a series of narrow slots and a corresponding series of cutting disks mounted above the table surface to rotate thereon with'the edges of thev disks projecting each into its respective slot, of a bar secured across the tableinfront of the cutting i surface of disks, and a thin platevmounted Von the top said bar' in a plane parallel with f the surface plane of the table and extending toward' the disk with narrow slots in said 'plate one for each disk, the sides of which slots each embrace the cutting edges of their respective disks.
4L. In a machine of the character specified, the combination with a table upon which the material to be cut is fed, said table provided with a narrow slot, the walls of which spread out downwardly, and a cutting disk mounted to rotate on the table with the edges of the disk proj ecting into said slot, of a thin plate slot-ted to embrace the cutting edge of the disk, mounted in a plane parallel with and above the surface plane of the table, and over which plate the material to be cut is fed to the knife.
