To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT S. CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Actions for Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a "specification.
My. inventlon relates to an improved means designed to automatically open the intake-valve and exhaust-valve of explosive engines, and the invention consists of a camactuated rock-shaft mounted at each side and ntrally of a pair of engine-cylinders, each haft having an integral U-shaped'portion or fork whose ends come alternatel in contact with the stems of the intake-vaves or exhaust-valves.-
The object of my invention is to lessen the number of rock-shafts or levers as ordinarily employed to open the intake and exhaust valves, and at the same time render convenient of access to lubricate the moving parts within the crank-case.
To this end my invention consists of the novel construction,arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed. x

A rotary motion is imparted to the cam shaft 6 by means of a small spur gear 9 fast on the crank-shaft n and in mesh with a large spur gear fast on said shaft 6. , and also open both exhaust-valves of said cylinders, in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3; Therefore, itis seen that by use of my improvement I provide fa structure of valve action that is simple; its working parts readily adjusted; having ample room-to lubricate its working parts, and at the'same time a structure that lessens the cost in the .manufacture of this class of engine.

In an explosiveengine having one or more pair of piston cylinders each provided with a spring controlled ihtake stem-valve and a spring controlled exhaust stem-val e, and a'crank casecommunicating with the cylinders, a fixed tubular support at each side of and between each pair of cylinders, a vertically-disposedv rock shaft extending through each support and journaled at its lowerend in thecrank case, each of said rock shafts having a U-shaped member at, its upper end and an integral inwardly-extending arm at a-p'oint removed from its inner end, a ,"driven shaft disposed at -ri ht angles with respect to said rock shaft, and a pair of spaced disks secured to the driven shaft and having cam faces contacting with said arms for actuating 'thejrock shaft'lwhere'by the ends of said U-shaped members are moved against'the valve stem for opening either the intake'o-r exhaust valve against the action of theirspririgs.
' 2. In an explosive engine having one or more pair of piston cylinders each provided with a spring controlled intakeis'tem-valve and a spring controlled exhaust stein-valve,
and a crank case communicating with the cylinders, a fixed tubular su port at each side of and between each pair 0 cylinders a vertically-disposed rock shaft extending through each support and journaled at its lower end I in the crank case, each of said rock shafts having a U-shaped member at' its upper end and an integral inwardly-extending arm at a point removed from its inner end, a driven shaft disposed at right angles with res ect to saidrock, shaft, a pair of s aced disks securedto t e driven shaft and aving cam faces contacting with said arms for actuating the rock fshaft whereby the ends of said U-shaped Ymembers are moved against the valve sterd'for-opening either the intake or exhaust valve-against the action of their springs, and means topermit of lateral adjustinent of the driven shaft. 3. In an explosive engine, the combination of a pair of piston cylinders each provided with a spring controlled intake stemvalve normally maintained in closed position by their springs, a driven shaft, a pair of cam disks fixed to said shaft, a pair of upri ht rock shafts arranged at the side of and etween .each pair of c "linders, each of said rock shafts having a fbrked upper end and an integral arm at its lower end engaging with said cam disk whereby said rock shafts are operated, a screw mounted in each of the arms of the forked end of each shaft and abutting against the valve stem whereby the intake and exhaust valves are alternately opened when the rock shafts are operated, and means to permit'of lateral adjustment of the driven shaft. i
6. In an explosive engine, the combination with a air of piston cylinders each provided wit a spring controlled intake stem-valve and a s ring-controlled exhaust stem valve, said v-a ve normally maintained springs, a crank casing communicating with said cylinders, of, a pan of upright rock valve and a spring controlled exhaust steinin closed position'by 'the action of said crank case, a fork carried upon the upper ends of each of the rock shafts and engaging with 'the valve stems for shifting the 'valves 'to' open position when therock shafts are actilated, lnwardly-extending arms projecting from the lower portions of said shafts, a driven shaft, a pair of spaced cam disks fixed to the driven shaft and adapted to en gage said arms whereby the rock shafts are actuated for alternately opening and closing theintake valves against the action of their sprm s.

In an explosive engine the combination with a pair. of piston cylinders each provided with a spring controlled intake stcnnvalve and a spring controlled exhaust stem-valve. said valve normally maintained in closed position by the action of said springs, a crank -asing communicating with -valves to open position when the rock shafts are actuated. imvardly-extending arms projecting from the lower portions of said shafts. a driven shaft, a pair of spaced cam disks fixed 'to the driven shaft and adapted to engage said arms whereby the rock shafts are actuated for alternately opening and closing the intake valves against the action of their springs. and means for alternately adjusting said driven shaft for positioning the cam disks in operative relation with respect to said arm.
9. In an explosive engine, the combination with a pair of piston cylinders each provided with a spring controlled intake stem-valve and a spring controlled exhaust stem-valve, said valve normally maintained gage said arms whereby the rock shafts are in closed position by 'theaction of said springs, a crank casing communicating with said cylinders, of a pair of uprightirock shafts journaled at their lower ends in the crank case, a fork carried upon the upper ends of each of the rock shafts and engaging with the valve stems for shifting the valves to open position when the'rock shafts are actuated, inwardly-extending arms projecting from the lower portions of said shafts, a driven shaft, a pair'of spaced cam disks fixed to the driven shaft and adapted to engage said arms whereby the rock shafts are actuated for alternately opening and closing the intake valve against the action of their springs, adjustable means carried by t the forks for controlling the opening movement of the valves, and means for alternately adjusting said driven shaft for positioning the cam disks in operative relation with respect to said arm.

12. In an explosive engine, the combination with a 'pair of piston cylinders each .provided with a spring controlled intake stem-valve and a spring controlled exhaust stem-valve, said valves normally maintained in closed position by their springs, and
means to constitute a crank case communieating with said cylinders, of a pair of upwardly-extending tubular supports fixed to said means and projecting outwardly at an inclination with respect to each other, said supports arranged between the pair of cylinders, a rock shaft extending through each of the supports and journaled at its lower end in said means, a fork carried upon the upper end of each of the rock shafts-and adapted to engage the valve stems of each cylinder for longitudinally shifting them when the rock shaft is actuated whereby the plates are alternately open against the action of their springs, inwardly-extending arms projecting from said rock shaft at the lower end thereof, a driven shaft supported by said means and disposed substantiall' at right an les with respect to the rock s aft, a pair of disks secured to the driven shaft and each provided with cam faces contacting with said arms foractuating each of the rock shafts alternately in opposite directions, means carried by the forks for controlling the opening movementof the valves, and means for alternately adjusting said driven shaft for positioning the disks in operative relation with respect to said arms.
