BURNER-MOUTI'IPIECE FOR INCANDESCENT GAS-BURNERS.
Application filed July 6, 1910. Serial No. 570,583.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV SCHUCHARDT, engineer, subject of the German Emperor, residing at Rixdorf, near Berlin, G iermany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burner- Mouthpieces for Incandescent Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in burner-mouthpieces for. incandescent gas burners.
Hitherto the attempt has been made with the aid of a pipe perforated on one side to cause the flame to be directed not in the aXial direction of the burner-tube but at right angles to the same, and also to produce a form of flame suitable for horizontal incandescent members with the aid of a burnerhead out off obliquely in front and covered by a perforated plate. However, by neither of these arrangements can a flame be produced which can cause an incandescent body to be brought to a state of uniform incandescence.
' Burner mouthpieces according to the present inventionhave such a construction that the mixture of gases on leaving the burner-tube can have any direction imparted to it, this being effected by the mixture being conducted against ribs or bars or the like having more or less great inclinations and arranged in the mouth or opening of the burner after the manner of the bars of a step-grate.
The deflection of the mixture of gas and air by ribs inclined to the axis of the mouthpiece can be effected equally well in the case of horizontal burners, vertical burners and inverted burners provided with mixing tubes directed vertically downward.
In the case of inverted burners the burnermouthpiece is suitably provided on two or more sides with outlet openings and deflecting ribs or bars arranged like the bars of a grate, so that in addition to the central outlet opening of the mouthpiece lateral outlet openings are also provided from which the mixture of gas and air flows in a suitably oblique direction against the incandescent mantle.
In the case of mouthpieces for gas under pressure the gas before reaching the deflecting ribs is dammed back, retarded or throttled so that the soapstone sieves which have hitherto been necessary are superfluous and Specification of Letters Patent.

burner-mouthpieces of any desired size can be employed.
The mixture of air and gas in the case of all kinds of burners provided with the improvements according to the present invention is uniformly throttled at the ribsarranged in the mouth of the burner at right angles or inclined to the direction of the current of gas and is so deflected in the desired direction that the flame produced in this manner is able to heat the incandescent mantle uniformly.
In the accompanying drawings four forms of burner-mouthpieces according to the present invention are illustrated.
Figures 1 to 3 illustrate a burner-moutlr pieoefor a horizontal burner, Fig. 1 being a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 an under-plan, and Fig. 3 an end elevation. Figs. 4: to 6 illustrate a burner-mouthpiece for an inverted burner, Fig. 4 being a longitudinal section, Fig. 5 a side elevation and Fig. 6 an under-plan. Figs. 7 to 12 illustrate two kinds of mouthpieces for burners for gas under pressure. Fig. 7 being a longitudinal section, Fig. 8 a side elevation, Fig. 9 an end elevation of one kind, and Fig. 10 a longitudinal section, Fig. 11 a side elevation and Fig. 12 a longitudinal section of the other kind.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, the mouthpiece a which is beveled off at the end is provided where beveled off with ribs or bars 6 arranged after the manner of a step-grate, which bars on account of their more or less inclined position dam back and deflect the mixture of gases.
Referring to Figs. l to 6, in this form the mouthpiece a is beveled off .at two sides and is provided with ribs or bars or plates b at both of the places where it is beveled off. Instead of being beveled off at only two places it might be beveled off at three ormore places and be provided with ribs or bars at each of the same. In the case of the form illustrated three flames with three green cores are produced, of which two are directed against the side walls of the incandescent member while the third fills up the end of the mantle. These three flames are not so sensitive to variations of pressure as a single flame-column and consequently soot is not readily formed and it is not necessary to insert a sieve in the burner-head to pre. vent the flame from passing through.
Referring to the form shown in Figs. 7 to 9, in this case the burner-mouthpiece is provided with a retarding ring 0 and with a defleeting bar 6 at each side. i
In the form illustrated in Figs. 10 to 12, the mouthpiece is provided with two retarding rings 0 of diiferent widths and with two deflecting bars 6 at each side. I What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: g
1. An incandescent gas burner mouthpiece having an orifice provided with bars inclined totheaxis of the mouthpiece whereby the gases leaving the mouthpiece are throttled and deflected. i. V
V 2. An incandescent gas burner mouthpiece comprising a tube beveled 01f obliquely: at one side of its end and provided where beveled ofi with a plurality of transverse bars arranged at an angle to the aXis of the tube. 3. An incandescent gas burner mouthpiece comprising a tube beveled olf obliquely at more than one side at its end and provided at each side where beveled ofl with a plural.- ity of bars arranged at an angle to the axis of the tube.
l. An incandescent gas burner moutl'ipiece comprising a tube having internally a throttling ring and an orifice provided with bars inclined to the axis of the mouthpiece whereby the gases leaving the mouthpiece are throttled and deflected.
5. An incandescent gas burner mouthpiece comprising a tube having internally a plurality o-t throttling rings and an orifice provided with bars inclined to the axis of the mouthpiece whereby the gases leaving the mouthpiece are throttled and deflected.
6. An incandescent gas burner mouthpiece comprising a tube having internally a plurality of throttling rings and beveled olt obliquely at more than one side at its end and provided at each side where beveled off with a plurality of bars ar anged at an angle to the axis of the tube.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAV SCHUCHARDT.
