Said fingers project throughelongated slots 21 in the plates 2 and 2' into elongated cylindrical chambers 22 formed inthe plates 2 and 2 adjacent the upper edges thereof; Arranged in said chambers are helical compression springs 23 which abut said fingers at their forward e'xtremb ties. The forward ends of the chambers 22 open, the latter ends being closed by detachable closure plates 24 which are secured in position over said ends byears 25 formed upon the plates 2 and 2 and to which depending ears 26 of said closures are secured by screws '27. With this construction it will be seen that said springs 23 are adapted tonormally hold the members 5 and 11 at their forward terminals of movement in the frame 1. t
Rotatably mounted upon the inner sides of of the plates 2' and 2 in circular recesses 28 'ma azine of the formed therein are co-axiallypositionedmutilated gears or disks 29 and 30. The forward end portions of the arms 17 and 18 are formed with teeth as indicated, to constitute racks 31 and 32 respectively, said racks meshing respectively with the gears 29 and 30. Said gears are adapted, as will be observed, when, rotated in a counterclockwise direction to efiectthe rearward movement of the members 5 and 11; the same'being however so mutilated that, when said members are at predetermined rearward pos1t1ons relative to the barrel, the same will be released for forward forcing by the springs 23. F urther, the gear 30 is so formed that, when the gears29 and 30 are. simultaneously rotated to effect the rearward drawing of the members 5 and 11, the former will be adapted to release the member 11 at a time. just subsequent to that of the release of the member 5,. this timin of releasing of'said members being efi'ecte by virtue of the difference in the lengths of the teeth 33 in said gears, that formed upon-the gear 29 being shortenthan that formed upon the car 30. Said gears are s aced apart slight y, both being eccentrica y connected to the forward extremity of a crank 34, the. rearward extremity of the latter being pivota'lly connected to the upper end of a rocker. member 35 which is 'pNbtallysecured at 36 at its lower end to the plates 2 and 2'. stemof the'latter projecting exteriorly to a position-for engagement in the us'ual circular guard 39. The rearward end portion 40 of said trigger-engages the rocker member 35, the arrangement being such that pulling-of the trigger effects rearward rocking of said member 35 and consequent counter-clockwise rotation vof-the gears 29 and 30 with the resulting actuations as above described. The return rocking of the memben 35 is aided by a leaf sprin 35 which abuts, as indicated, a rearwar extension of said member. Retrograde rotation of the gears 29 and 30 is prevented by a spring pressed pawl 41 which is adapted to engage ratchet teeth 41 formed in the inner surfaces of said gears.
The handle portion of the frame is hollow, it being designed to constitute the istol. The interior of sai f magazine is divided longitudinally by a partition 42 into two similar cartridge chambers 43 and 43, said chambers communicating at their upper extremities with a common centrally positioned chamber 44. Said partition 'is formed of a single piece,- of metal which is bent back on itself in form an intermediate chamber or space thesame being .rigidly secured in position at its inner edge by the pins 3, as clearly .shown in Fig. 6.
The portigns of the plates 2 and 2 at the handle are recessed at their inner'sides, the recesses being covered by plates 46',to form narrow chambers 47, the latter being accessible only through openings 48 at the rearward edges of the plates 2 and; 2. The plates 46 and the parallelly extending plate portions of the partition 42 are provided with siibstantially centrally positioned longitudinally extendirlg slots 49 and 50 resp ecfively. Arranged in each of the chambers .43 and 43 is a substantially T-shaped block 51, the same being provided with laterally projecting studs 52 and 53 which engagerespectively the slots 49 and 50 pro vided inthe adjacent wallsof the former,

The inner or hooked ends of said members 63 extend through the openings 48 into the chambers 47 and engage the studs 52 of the blocks 51. The arrangement is such as will'be observed that, upon the opening movement of the plate 56, the blocks 51 will be drawn downwardly by the members 63 to their lower terminals of movement in the magazine chambers so as to a permit of insertion of cartridges intothe latter in positions resting upon'said block's,

' With the construction set forth it will be s'eeii' that, upon the downward movement of the blocks 51, as caused by the opening swinging of the closure plate 56, .the lower most studs 53 of the former will engage the slots 69 and 69' in the dogs 67 and 67 and efiect the downward rocking of the latter to restraining position, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, in which position said dogs will be held by virtueof the levers 71 and 72.
Rockingly secured at 76 adjacent the lower end and co-pl-anar with the lever 72 is a lever 77 the lat-ter'having a projection 78 adapted when the rear end of said lever 77 is rocked upwardly to engage the lower end of the lever 72 toeffectthe rocking thereof to release the dog 67. The rear end of the lever 77 is connected bymeans of alink 79.

The arrangement is such that, when said plate is in lowered or open position, the-lever 77 will be in inoperative position, as shown in Fig; 6, but, when said plate is elevated to closing position', said lever will be rocked-to engage the lower end of the lever72 to effect the release of the dog-67, as above described and as shown in Fig. 4.
Rockingly mounted at 81- adjacent the upper extremity of the lever 71 is a dog 82.
The latt; r is formed with a finger 83 which traverses-.the path of the uppermost stud 53 of the bldck .51 mounted in the chamber 43, said finger being adapted. when said block 18 adjacent its upper terminal of movement in the chamber 43, to be engaged and rocked thereby. Formedon said dog 82 is a second .finger 84 which, when the former is rocked, s ust mentioned, is adapted to engage the cu r extremity of the lever 71 to effect the;
thereof so that-the'lower end there in Fig. 5. Such movement of the member -62 is aided by the rearward end portion 85 feeding of cartridges from the latter chamber. The number of cartridges contained in the magazine'chambers at any time maybe ascertained-through the medium of slots 86 provided in the plates 2 and 2 directly oposite the slots 49 in the plates 46, the studs 02 of the blocks 51 being visible through said slots 86. The latter are covered by transparent strips 87 preferably'of mica which are secured in position by means of metallic strips 88 secured to the outer surfaces of the plates 2 and 2. 89 indicate ordinary bone or horn grips which are also secured upon the outer surfaces ofthe plates 2 and 2.
With the construction as shown and de-' scribed, the magazine chambers being sup plied with cartridges, it will be seen that the latter will be constantly forced up through the chambers 43 and 43 toward the chamber 44. The rearward end portion 85 of the member 35 is reduced in thickness, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 10, so that when said member is rocked rearward'ly, as caused by the pulling of the trigger, the same will be received in the upper end of the chamber 42, that is between the plate portions of the. partition 42 or in a position directly under the cartridge which is subsequently fed into the chamber 44. When the trigger is released and the member 35 permitted to rock back to initial position said extremity 85 will engage the cartridge positioned thereabove and will force the same into engagement with the under side of the breech block, as shownin Fig. 6, or in a position for passage through the openings 9 and 16 to the chamber-8 upon rearward movement of the members and 11.
Formed integrally with the member 5 at the under side thereof is a depending rearwardly extending arm 90. Pivotally secured at 91 to the arm 90 is a finger 92. Interposed between the rearward extremity of the arm 90 and the finger 92 is a leaf spring 93 adapted to'normally force the finger upwardly to substantially vertical position. Said finger. when the member 5 is at. its forward terminal of movement, is held in loweredor horizontal position by engagement with shoulders 94 formed in the inner sides of the plates 2 and .2. However, upon rearward movement of said member 5 said finger will be slid from engagement with the shoulders 94 and to I positioiPheneath the cartridge contained in thechaniber 44. Upon release of said finger the same will be forced upwardly by the spring 93 to forcible engagement with the cartridge positioned thereover so that, when the openings 9 and 16 are brought to register with the cartridge,
the latter' will be forced ther'ethrough into the chamber 8 in the member 5, as clearly indicated in Eig. 10,
In the rotary operation of the gears 29 and 30 as before described, the latter, when.
the crank 34 is at its rearward terminal of movement, as shown in Fig. 10, will be on substantially dead center. In order to prevent any locking or; cessation of operation for this reason, the crank 34 is provided in trmediate its extremitieswith an obliquely upwardly and forwardly projecting leaf spring 95. Said spring is so positioned that upon forward or return movement of the member 11 the arm 90 will engage and depress said spring and thereby obviously effect the downward forcing of the crank 34 with the desired result. as above mentioned.
In the operation of the pistol then it will be seen that, with the cartridge chambers filled, upon pulling the trigger the members 5 and 11 will be forced rearwardly until the openings 9 and 16 main registration with the chamber 44 whereupon the car 'tridge contained in the latter will be forced into position in the chamber 8 in the member 5 by the finger 92. The rearward end of thecartridge in such position rests against the adjacent walls of the chamber 8 with a hooked projection 96 which traverses the rearward end of the expulsion opening 10, the forward end thereof, that is the'bullet of the cartridge, resting against the upper wall 'portionof the breech 'end of the barrel, the lower wall portion of the latter being cut away as at 97 to permit of admission of the cartridge thereinto. Upon the cartridge reaching this position, the member 5 is released, the latter carrying the cartridge forward to a position within the breech ofthe barrel, where said cartridge will be rigidly held between the rear? ward wall of the member 5 and the rearward extremity of the barrel, the latter engaging the circumferential fiange at the rearward extreinity of the cartridge. The breech block is then released, the same, carrying the firing pin, being forced forwardly eflcting the explosion of the cartridge. Upon the succeeding pulling of the trigger/the ,same succcssion of operation of the various parts results. the spent cartridge being, by reason of the hooked projection 96 which engages the flange at the rearward extre iity thereof, carried rearwardly with the iembers 5 and 11. The free end of said'det'ent is adapted to be rocked to engage notches 103 .and 103 provided in the ward terminals ofmovement.

A magazine pistol comprising a frame, a stationary barrel, a cartridge receptacle slidably mounted upon the breech end of said barrel and having an admission open: ing at its under side, a within said cartridge receptacle, a firing pin' on said breech block adapted to project into the rearward extremity of said carbreech block slidable i I r t communicate with said opening in said cartridge receptacle when said receptacle is at its rearward terminal of movement, resilient means for feeding cartridges from said magazine to said receptacle when said admission opening is registering with said .magazine, racks on said receptacle and breech block, rotatably mountedmutilated gears meshing with said racks and adapted when properly rotated to ettect rearward movement of said breech block and said receptacle and adapted to release said mem bers when at their rearward terminals of movement, an operative connection between said trigger and said gears, and means for forwardly forcing said receptacle and breech block when released by said gears, substantially as described.

In a magazine pistol the combination of a frame. a, barrel, a slidable cartridge receptacle adapted to carry cartridges to I fsaid closure plate effects tridge receptacle, a magazine formed in the handle of said pistol frame and, adapted to a position for exploding in the breech end ofsaid barrel, a magazine substantially vertically disposed to the axis of said barrel, a partition in said magazine dlviding the same into two cartridge compartments, a chamber adapted to receive cart-ridges from each of said compartments and direct them to said receptacle, and resilient means in said compartments for feeding cartridges therein toward said chamber substantially as described.
8.'In a magazine pistol the combination of a frame, a barrel, a slidable cartridge receptacle adapted to carry cartridges toa position for exploding in the breech end of said barrel, a magazine substantially pcrpendicularlydisposed to the axis of said barrel, a partition in said magazine dividing the same into two cartridge compartments, a chamber adapted to receive cartridges from'each of said compartments and direct them to 'said receptacle, and resilient means in said compartments for feeding cartridges therefrom toward said chamber. .and means whereby feeding of the cartridges will be successive from said compartment, substantially as described.
9. In a magazine pistol the combination of a frame, a barrel, a slidable cartridge receptacle' adapted to carry cartridges to a position for exploding in the breech end of said barrel, a magazine in the handle of saidpistol, a partition in said magazine dividing the same into two cartridge compartments, the rearward ends of said compartments being open, a hinged closure plate for said compartments, resilient means in said compartments for feeding cartridges therefrom toward said cartridge receptacle, an; operative connection between said means and said closure plate whereby opening of compression of said means to permit of admission of cartridges, and means whereby feeding of the cartridges will be successive from said chambers, substantially as described.
10. A magazine pistol comprising a frame.
a stationary barrel, a cartridge'receptacle slidably mounted upon the breech 'end of said barrel having a cartridge admission opening in its under side, a breech block slidable within said cartridge receptacle and having an opening adapted to register with said opening in said receptacle, a firing pin on said breech blockadapted to project into said cartridge receptacle. a magazine .disposed at' substantially right angles to said barrel and adapted to communicate with said openings in said receptacle and breech block When said receptacle and breech block are at substantially their rearward terminals of movement, means for feeding cartridges from said ma 'azine to said receptacle when said openin s are in registration with said magazine, a trigger and a System of levers and gears operatively c0nnected therewith for rearwardly drawing said receptacle and breech block, springs forforwardly forcing said receptacle and breech. block when released by said retracting means, and-means for locking said. re-' cept-acle against movement; in said frame, substantially as described.
