RELIEVING ATTACHMENT FOR LATHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
iatented Jan. to, ion.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lticiuno K. Ls BLUND and IVILLIAM F. Gnome, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relieving Attachments for Lathes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in lathes, and relates more particularly to an attachment for turning a relief or clearance on the teeth of taps and milling cutters, and other work which requires clearance to the radial face of the tooth, such as gear cutters, forming cutters, &c.
The invention has for its object to provide mechanism to be attached to the compound rest of a lathe and to be driven by the spindle of the latter, whereby a reciprocatlng motion is given to the top slide of said com ound rest.
A furt er object is to provide improved means for varying the number of recipro cations per revolution of the work.
A further object is to provide means to relieve at any angle to which the top slide mag be swiveled.
further object is to provide for the adjustment ofthe top slide at all times whether the relieving attachment is engaged or not.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views: Figure 1 is aside view of a portion of a lathe illustrating our invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the compound rest; Fig. 8 is a cross section on line 3-3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view on line M, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the change speed gearing; and Fig. 6 is adetail of the opcrating shaft for the relieving. mechanism.
Referring to the drawings A designates the drive gear mounted on the end of the spindle, a quadrant a being supported. by a bracket (1 and carrying selectable change a that connect with the spindle gPillS (I gear.
. top slide (Z Said gearing is arranged to transmit motion to a telescopic shaft B provided with knuckle joints b and operatively connected with the driving shaft 1). The shaft B, by reason of its flexible and telescopic construction provides a flexible connection between the bracket a and the compound rest C so that the latter may be adjusted in and out and also along the carriage. The shaft 6' is jonrnaled in the swivel slide'b and carries a cam b the rise on which is made to correspond to the amount of relief required on the work. r
The compound rest is'provided with a sliding piece D, disposed between the top. slide (Z and the swivel slide 6 whichcarries at the lower end, the stud d and roller d At the upper end it is connected to thecross feed screw 11 of the compound rest C. This construction admits cross adjustment, of the top slide at all times. A 0011 spring (1 acts against the piece D, in such a manner as to keep the cam 1) against roller d and furnishes the means. for returning tho top slide to relieve the next tooth in the work.
In use, the attachment operates as Motion is transmitted from the spindle gear A through the selectable change gears a and a at the end of the lathe to the telescopic shafts B and the shaft 1; in the swivel slide 71 of the compound rest to which the. cam b is attached, giving sai cam continu-. ous rotating motion in definite relation to the spindle. the roller d the piece D is driven forward, since the piece D is connected to the top slide ll of the compound rest by means of a cross feed screw 1], the reciprocating motion of the slide D is directly transmitted to the which carries the operating tool. As soon as the point of the cam clears the roller the spring 11" acting against the piece D returns the slide (1 and iece D to position.
When the functions 0 the relieving attachment are not required, the piece I) is io'ckez'. securely in position by drawing the nuts (I on bolt (Z which being rigidly connected to the piece I) as by screwthreads, brings said iece D, and the swivel slide d together, 10c in an absolutely r1 id construction, and holding the roller 0% out of engagement with cam b (Ni v follows:
As the cam revolves against these two members to form It will be understood, of course, that the number of reciprocations per revolution of the worlr is dependent upon the number of teeth in the cutter or tap, and these proportions can be varied by means of selectable change gears at the end of the lathe. It will be further noted that by means of our improve-d relieving mechanism the co1npound rest top slide can be swiveled at any angle, thereby admitting of the cutters being relieved on their ,side faces.
l'Vhat'we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. The combination with a compound topl rest of a lathe provided with a top slide and a swivel slide, of a sliding piece disposed between said slides, a driving shaft having one end extended transversely through said swivel slide, a spring *arried by said swivel slide and acting against said sliding piece, and a cam carried by said shaft for moving said sliding piec against the action of said spring and means for locking said sliding piece against movement relative to said swivel slide, and to also hold said sliding piece out of engagement with said cam.
2. The combination with the compound tool rest of a lathe provided with a top slide and a swivel slide, of a sliding piece disposed between said slides, a driving shaft having one end extended transversely through said swivel slide, a spring carried by said swivel slide and acting against said sliding piece, and a cam carried by said shaft for moving said sliding piece against theaction of said spring, a bolt rigidly connected to said sliding piece, and nuts work ing on said bolt and adapted to prevent relative movement of said sliding piece and said swivel slide.
The combination with the compound tool rest of a lathe, provided with a top slide and a swivel slide, of a sliding piece disposed bet-ween said slides and operatively connected with the top slide, and means for periodically reciprocating said sliding piece, and means for locking said sliding piece against movement relative to said swivel slide, and to also hold said sliding piece out of engagement with said reciprocating means.
4. The con'ibination with a compound tool rest of a lathe provided with a top slide and a swivel slide, of a sliding pieceniounted on said swivel slide, means lor connecting said sliding piece with said top slide, a cam supported by said swivel slide, a rod secured to said sliding piece and extended through said swivel slide, a spring carried W said swivel slide and encircling said rod said spring acting on said sliding piece to hold the same in engagement with said cam, and means forrotating said cam, and nuts on the end of said rod, whereby relative movement of said sliding piece and swivel slide is prevented when the nuts are tightened.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to the specification in the presence of two witnesses.
