Be it known that I, ROBERT D. KINYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specifieation.
My invention pertains to improvements in machines or devices for smoothing or finishing the exterior convex surfaces of barrels, casks, tubs, firkins, and the like, and includes means for smoothing the staves and also subjecting them to the polishing or finishing eEectof sand, such as by the employment of a sand-belt or drum.
lIhe main and leading object of the invention is the provision of an appliance of this character which will be both simple in construction and economical to manufacture, the device at the same time possessing` the advantage of finishing barrels or the like expeditiously.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and to which reference should be made in connection with the following detailed description, I have illustrated a preferred and desirable embodiment of the invention, and in these drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the appliance with one of the shafts partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the machine, certain parts being broken away and others shown in section; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the rasp or planer cylinder shaft being sec tioned; Fig. 4 is a face view' of one of the supporting and holding heads equipped with independently adjustable cone sections; Fig. 5 is a central section of the construction shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a central section of the clutch mechanism of the lower shaft; Fig. 7 is a face view and Fig. 8 an edge view of a planer cylinder or head which may be used as a substitute for the rasp illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive.
The main frame of the machine includes a pair of parallel spaced wooden beams 10, 10 supported by suitable legs or standards 11, 12 and 13, such beams being cross-connected at intervals by transverse blocks or the like characterized 14, 15 and 16. ciprocatory rectangular carriage 19 equipped on its bottom face with bearings 2O accommodating transverse shafts 21, supplied at their ends with rollers 22 adapted to roll or travel on the top, horizontal, inwardlyextended flanges of the angl-e tracks.
Between the beams 10 and rotatable in suitable bearings-23 and 24 I provide a comparatively ylong screw-shaft 25, passing through a threaded nut 26 fixed to the bottom surface of the sliding carriage 19, whereby turning of the screw-shaft causes forward or rearward travel of the carriage and parts supported thereby. At its front end shaft has a gear 27, the teeth of which mesh with those of a similar gear 28 on a bottom shaft 29 rotatable in bearings 30 and 31, this shaft having fixed thereon by set-screws 32, as is indicated in Fig. 6, a clutch spool 'or sleeve 33 supplied at its opposite ends with integral disks 34 and 35 having beveled or chamfered surfaces 36. The sleeve 33 also has at both ends cylindrical recesses or cavities 37 and 38 housing a pair of coil expansion springs 39 and 40. Spring 39 at one end bears against the botto-m of the recess 37 and at its other end presses against a face of a pulley 41 loosely mounted on the shaft 29 and having a conical surface 42 adapted to coperate with a corresponding surface of the disk portion 34. The spring 40 bears against a similar pulley 43 also loose on the shaft 29 and supplied with a conical surface 44 to co-act with a similar surface of the disk 35, it being obvious that these springs in the normal conditions of the parts act to separate the two pulleys from the driving clutch sleeve 33 fixed to the shaft. Loose on this shaft I supply a pair of sleeves 45 and 46 each having an annular groove in which fits an inwardly-extended pin of a sleeve actuator or clutch operating member 47 the inner elevated or off-set end 48 of which has a pin 49 projecting into slots 50 of the bifurcated arm 51 rigid with a transverse shaft 52 rotatable in a pair of bearings 53 and 54 mounted on the sides of the supporting legs 12. At the front of the machine this con` trolling shaft has fixed thereto a similar arm 55 having a loose connection with the top end of a link 56 pivoted at its lower end to one leg or section of a double treadle or lever 57, centrally fulcrumed or pivoted at 58 and supplied with a pair of foot pieces 59 and 60. On this shaft 112 I pivot two arms of a frame 115 carrying two belttightener pulleys 116 and 117 located some distance apart, the frame or bracket having a forwardly-extended loop handle 118 provided for the purpose of swinging the frame so as to cause the pulley 117 to deflect the front stretch of the sand belt so as to bring it in contact with the exterior surface of the barrel, it being understood that such bradant belt is suiiiciently loose on its pulleys to permit its`operation. Then the operator releases the handle 118 the frame carrying the pulleys will of its own weight and the action of the belt swing rearwardly about the shaft 112 to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 3, whereby the pulley 116 deflects the back stretch of the belt, permitting the front stretch to become taut, in which position it is some little distance from the barrel. In order that the bracket 111 and the parts carried thereby may turn or swivel, I provide the same with a cylindrical extension or shaft portion 111a eX- tending through the back beam 10, the bracket being held in place by a nut 111b ou the lower threaded end of such part.
On the carriage 19 between the drums 69 and 8G I mount a pair of curved, guiding, barrel-supporting' rods 119 on which the barrel is adapted to rest before the tail drum is shifted to bring the supporting cone sections in the open ends of the barrel or cask, these rods 119 being so shaped that they guide the barrel toward such cone sections. In order also that the carriage when it reaches its normal forward position indi cated in Fig. 2 may actuate the clutch controller 47 to render both clutches inoperative, I pivot at 120 on the front beam 10 a short lever or arm 121 adapted to engage one side of the handle 63 and actuate the same to govern the operation of the clutches.
The operation of this mechanism is practically as follows c-*Assuming that the belt 93 is on the loose pulley 90 and that neither of the belts 64 or G5 is acting upon shaft 29 and screw 25, and that the tail drum 09 has been retracted, a barrel with open ends to be smoothed and nished is deposited or rested on the supporting rods 119, whereupon the handle 76 is shifted to the right, bringing the cone sections carried by the disk G9 into the tail end of the barrel, and causing the latter to travel slightly forwardly to receive in its head end the supporting cone sections of the head disk 86. After the barrel is thus securely mounted on and clamped between the two disks and sectional cones, the handle 76 isv locked in position to maintain the parts in this relation, the spring dog 75 entering one of the notches in the stationary segment 74. The operator then actuates the handle 95 to shift the belt from the loose pulley 90 to the tight pulley S9, such shifting causing a rotation of the shaft 84 and the barrel held between the disks. The rotation of the barrel having thus been accomplished, the operator either by the handle 63 or by the treadle 57 and foot-piece 59 shifts the clutch controller 47 to the left to render the belt 65 operative to rotate the screw 25 in such direction that the carriage and barrel will be caused to travel toward the left as the device is viewed in Figs. 1 and 2. The workman also grasps the handle 105 and presses the rotating rasp 106 on to the surface of the barrel to effect the smoothing operation as the barrel rotates and travels by the same. Inward and outward sliding of such rasp and its lateral turning, owing to th-e free movement of its bearings 103 in the guides 102 permit the operator to follow the contour of the barrel as the same travels along. As is well known, the staves of such barrels may not always fit together neatly and are not always smooth on their exterior, the rasp finishing the barrel so that it presents a substantially-smooth exterior. lVhen the barrel has completed its movement to the left, the operator actuates the treadle 57 through the foot-piece 60 so as to shift the clutch controller 47 to cause a reverse rotation of the screw 25, which, as will be readily understood, slides the carriage 19 in the opposite direction. Durin this travel of the carriage to the right the workman or operator pulls the handle 118 toward him so as to bring the sand belt on to the barrel, shifting such handle and swiveling the bracket 111 as may be necessary to compel the belt to properly follow the contour or convexity of the barrel actuated `upon, the rasp during such travel of the barrel having no action thereon. When the carriage and barrel reach the limit of their right-hand movement, the former strikes the lever 121, turning the same on its fulcrum 120 and shifting the handle 63 to render both clutches of the shaft 29 inoperative, thereby causing a cessation of the travel of the carriage. By releasing the handle 76 and drawing backward the disk 69, the smoothed, finished barrel or cask may be easily removed and replaced by another, as will be readily understood.
In some cases, and especially where secondhand or used barrels are to be smoothed, it is desirable to employ a knife-equipped planerhead or cylinder in place of the rasp shown and described, and 1n Figs. 7 and S I have indicated a suitable construction for this purpose. The cylinder or planer head 122 is provided with a plurality of sharp-edged knives 123 held in place by tightening or setscrews 2land inclined with respect to the axis of the cylinder. Since such a device operates in substantially the same manner as the cylinder of an ordinary planer, a further description thereof appears to be unnecessary.
inasmuch as the invention herein set forth is susceptible of a variety of embodiments and is not limited and restricted to the exact structural features herein set out, it may be remarked that many minor mechanical changes inay be made in the finishing` device of this application and drawings Without departure from the substance and essence of my invention, and Without sacrificing any of itsl benefits and advz'intages.
l claim:
l. In a machine of the character described, the combination of means to rotate a barrel, means to reciprocate the barrel in a straight line during such rotation, a shaft, a smoothing' implement mounted on said shaft, means to rotate said shaft and implement, a pair of bearings for said shaft, guides for said bearings in which the latter are adapted to slide, and a handle connected to both of said bearings, whereby the smoothing; implement may be moved toward and from the barrel A and may be shifted to follow its contour, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a movable carriage, a pair of drums adapted to retaina barrel between them, a pair of shafts mounted upon said carriage, one of said shafts being,Y longitir L' sliding` connection with said rotating' means,
a shaft fixed with respect to the tra vel of the carriage, a smoothingl in'iplement mounted on said shaft, means to rotate said shaft and implement, a pair of bearings for said shaft, guides for said bearings in which the latter are adapted Ato slide, and a handle connected to both of said bearings, whereby the smoothing` implement may be moved toivard and from the barrel and. may be shifted to follow its contour, substantially as described.
