MONOGRAM-EMBOSSING PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 26, 1910. Serial No. 540,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. SGAD DING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Monogranr Embossing Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in embossing presses such as have a horizontal pivoted plunger operated by a cam lever, and has for its object to prevent the possible shifting of the plunger die plate after usage, laterally, or forwardly and rearwardly, relatively to the fixed die plate of the base, whereby the two die plates will at all times exactly register. This object I at tain by mounting the plunger in a guide slot in the overhanging arm of the press, with the plunger bearing for substantially its entire length at successive points along the walls of the slot, both when depressed and elevated.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embossing press constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, showing the plunger in its elevated position; Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the plunger depressed; Fig. tis an inverted plan of the plunger and plunger die plate; and Fig. is a front elevation of the press frame.
The press, more specifically set forth, comprises a base 10, of an extent to insure stability, having rigidly applied at one end, as by casting itintegral, an overhanging arm 11, the arm being given sufficient strength and rigidity by constructing it with outwardly-extended flanges 11*, arranged at opposite sides adjacent to the lower edges and extending for the full length of the arm to the base 10. The arm is slotted longi tudinally for its full length to receive the plunger 12, the latter being relatively long and pivoted at its inner end to the arm directly over the latters connection to the base. The plunger at its outer end is provided with a die plate 13, movable to and from the fixed die plate 14, rigid with the base 10. In order that these die plates may at all times come together in perfect register,
the plunger die plate 13 is formed integral with the plunger, and the plunger has a bearing with the walls of the guide slot 11, at successive points for substantially its entire length, both when the plunger is in its elevated and depressed positions, the forward portion of the plunger not leaving the slot in the latter position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. For depressing the plunger, the outer end of the arm 11 is constructed with the upwardly-extending ears 15, arranged at the opposite sides of the guide slot- 11, between which is pivoted the operating lever 16, having the cam 17 arranged atits inner end to force the plunger down when turned from the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3, and in the latter position locking the two die plates together. For returning the plunger after it is released by the lever, a U-shaped spring 18, is arranged adjacent to the pivot of the plunger and has one arm extended along the base and the other arm extended along the under side of the plunger.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
An embossing press comprising a fiat seating base having a die plate, an arm overhanging the base, with one end of the arm and base rigidly connected and the remain ing portions of the arm and base spaced a substantial distance apart, the arm having a longitudinal guide slot extending vertically therethrough for approximately its full length, a plunger pivoted at one end within the slot of the arm, and having a die plate arranged to register with the die plate of the base when the arm is depressed, the plunger constructed and arranged relatively to the arm to contact at both its inner and outer portions with the walls of the slot when the arm is in both its elevated and depressed positions, the said die plates hav ing respectively male and female embossing symbols arranged to interfit when the die plates are brought together, and means arranged to actuate the plunger.
