Description

T. 0'. MENGES. SPEED REGULATOR FOR INTERNAL GOMBUSTIONENGINBS.
APPLICATION FILED 00'1. 28,-1909.
THE NORRIS PETERS 0a., WASHINGTON, a. :1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE C. MENGES, 0F WATERLOO, IOWA, ASSIGN'OR T0 WILBUR W. MARSH, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
SPEED-REGULATOR FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE C. MENGES, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulators for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to speed regulators for internal-combustion engines, and the object of my improvement is to conveniently and accessibly control the action of the valve-rod trip-lever by means of adjustable yieldable means mounted upon said lever and coacting therewith. This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter fully described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a representation of that part of the speed-regulating mechanism of an internal-combustion engine which contains my said improvement.
The engine-bed or housing being designated by a, w is a slotted boss through whose horizontal slot the valve-operating rod Z) plays to and fro. Upon the end of the rod 7) is an anti-friction idler i contacted by the edge of a cam-wheel h on the stud-shaft 9, said cam-wheel being connected to a gearwheel 7.: on the same shaft to rotate therewith, and said gear-wheel being intermeshed with and driven by a pinion Z on the powershaft j. Upon said power-shaft is secured a fiy-wheel p, and a sleeve w, annularly grooved at m is slidably mounted on the same shaft. Governor-weights (not shown) are mounted in a well-known manner on the ends of the movable arms a, the latter having pivot-joints 0 with the fixed arms 23 projecting from said sleeve 00. The governor weights act to shift the sleeve 00 to and fro upon the shaft j in one direction or the other according to the variation of speed of rotation of the shaft. A bracket-arm 2 projects from the body a, and its end is upturned to support the fulcrumpivot n of a lever 9. One end of said lever enters and engages the groove m in the governor-sleeve 00, while the other end of the lever extends forwardly, be ing .bent at an angle toward the rod 6 to closely approach it. A detent c is projected from the outer surface of the rod 1) in a proper location to engage a socket d in the inturned end of said lever when the speed of the shaft j is such as to cause its governor Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 28, 1909.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911. Serial No. 525,191.
to so shift the sleeve w as to move the socketed part of said lever to its inner position. In this position of the lever-arm the detent 0 engages its socket, and the rod 1) is prevented from acting upon the valve and ignitingmechanism of the engine until the decreased speed of the shaft j thereby occasioned causes the governor to shift the lever-arm out of the path of movement of said detent. When said detent is thus freed, the rod is actuated by means of the cam-wheel h as usual and the engine has a constant succession of ignitions in its combustion-chamber. The forward arm of said lever is provided with an expansion 1' containing a bored out seat 8 for a small coiled compression-spring f which bears against the outer end of the boss 10. The outer part of the opening 8 is interiorly-threaded to receive an adjusting screw e, whereby the tension of said spring may be adjusted at will. The spring operates to yieldingly oppose the too near approach of the socketed end of said lever to the rod 6, except when under the action of the governor the lever-socket is thrust into the path of movement of the detent c. The adjustment is thus convenient, since the adj usting-screw is very accessible, and direct in its action in company with the spring upon the lever-arm.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with the frame, the detent-bearing valve-rod and the governor of an internal-combustion engine, of a stopcarrying lever adapted to be oscillated by said governor to throw said stop into and out of the path of movement of said detent, said lever having a transverse interiorlythreaded opening in its end which carries said stop, a coiled compression-spring in said opening and projecting therefrom and adapted to bear against said frame yieldingly to eifect a resilient resistance to the outward throw of said governor, and an adjusting-screw in said opening adapted to adjustably bear against said spring to vary its degree of tension.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 11th day of Oct. 1909.
THEODORE C. MENGES.
