osocsa,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented can 3, 1911;
v Application filed December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,349.
following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in wrenches, more especially designed for use about automobiles, and has in 'view, .a wrench pneferably'of the socket type, which can be conveniently worked in places ordinarily inaccessible or of difficult working, to the wrench of conventional construction.
To this end I construct the wrench with the shank in two sections pivoted together and having meansfor retaining the sections at difi'erent angles of adjustment, the outer section having a socket or other equivalent wrench member journaled thereon and provided with a reversible ratchet mechanismd' an the ,other and outer. section of the shank having a handle assembled therewith to extend thereinto or across the outer end portion thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a'side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the inner section of the shank turned at rightangles to the outer section of the shank in full lines, and arranged in alinement therewith in dotted outline; and Fig, 3 is a central longitudinal section on the line 3-'3 of Fig. 1, of the wrench with the handle passed within the outer section of the shank.
More specifically set forth, the wrench embodies in its construction a shank composed of two sections, an inner section 5 and an outer section 6, one of the sect1ons(here1n referred to as the outer section) having a bifurcation receiving the central reduced portion 7 of the inner section and pivoted thereto by a pin 8, adapting the inner section of the shank to be'turned to either side of an aline ing position at right-an less to the outer sec tion 01;. the shank. To ock the two sections of the shank in substantially any position within the limits of their adjustment, the outer section of the shank is provided with a spring-pressed or tapered outer end arranged to en go any one of a number of recesses 10 of like form in the edge of the segmental portion of the outer end of the inner section of the shank.
pin 9, having a rounded The inner section of the shank is coristructed -with a number of longitudinal grooves, shown to be four in number, in each of which is slidable' a pawl 11, pressed. inwa-rdly bye sprin'g'12, the latter at its outer.
end seating in a recessforming a, continua} t1on of the rooveand bearing on the opposite end o the pawl. a A. collar 13, of substantially the same ens ternal diameter as the maximum diameter of the shank sections, fits over the inner section of the shank at the inner endsiozf the pawl grooves or ways and prevents the pawl from being displaced laterally, as also does a cam-ring 14, revoluble on this section of the shank directly above and restingt on the outer edge of the dollar. The upperedge of thercam-ring has cams 16, arranged to engage in-certain' positions of the ring, the under or inner edges ofpro'ections 17, extending from the upper ends 0 the pawls, and force the pawls upwardly or outwardly against the-tension of the springs, the location of the cams bein such that two oppositely arranged paws will be retracted while the other two are projected by the springs, thus causing the sets of pawls :to
be alternately retracted and projected by- I reversing'the rotation of the cam-ring 1 rotary movement of the cam-ring is mited on the outer section of the shank by any suitable means, such as a projection or shoulderv 18 arranged on the ring, adapted to engage the shoulders or sides of adjacent pawls. Beyond the grooves or ways in wliichthe pawls move, the outer section of the shank is extended. and reduced, forming a journal 19 receiving a socket wrench mem ber 20, the extended and reduced portion of the shank having an annular groove fll, in which engages a pin 22, passing through the wrench member and preventin the longitudinal movement of the wrenci member in either direction, while permitting it to freely revolve The upper or outer end of the wrench is constructed with teeth 23, arranged to be alternately en aged by the two sets of pawls 11, that set 0% pawls which is retracted by the cam-ring a ainst the spring, being moved from the at of the shoulders or teeth. The ends or the two sets of nawls are oppositely heveled, so that both a right-hand and left-hand ratchet mechanism for the wrench is provided.
having an enlargement 25 at each end, and being adapted to he drawn out and turned .out and turned to one side into the slot :26, 1 it may he shifted to the opposite side of I the shank, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for
. an angle to the outer sectior as shown in crosswise of the shank into aslot 26 at one side, the slot extending through the upper or outer end and communicating with the i bore of the shank. T he complete withdrawal of the handle from the shank is prevented by a shoulder 27, arranged near the top and adapted to contact witlrthe inner enlargement 25. When the handle is drawn which purpose an opening 28 formed in this side of the shank through which the enlargement 2.3 adapted to pass. When the inner sectlon of the shank is turned at Fig. 2, the outer section of the shank is used a handle. at which time the handle 2st will ordinarily be passed to its inoperativeposition, asshown in Fig. 3.
Having'thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent 1. In a tool of the character described, a shank having a hollow portion, and a handle I adapted to be contained within the hollow portion of the shank or extend transversely and slide to either side thereof, and movable from one of said positions to the other while assembled with the shank.
2. In a tool of the character described, a shank having a hollow portion and provided with a slot passing through the outer end and thrdugh one side thereof, and a handle con- 1 structed to pass approximately longitudi nally within the hollow portion of the shank l and when withdrawn to swing to one side thereof through the said slot.
1 3 In a tool of the character described, a
? shank having a hollow portion provided with an internal shoulder near the outer end,
said shank having a slot extending throu h the outer end and through one side and a so having an opening through the opposite 2 side. and a handle constructed to pass within the hollow portion of the shank and into the said slot crosswise of the handle and 'havin an enlargement at its inner end adapted to contact with the said shoulder and pass l through the said opening.
I y In testimony whereof I'have signed my i name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES. ANDREW. HARTVIGSEN.
