Description
A. ZOLLINGER. STRING FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. APPLICATION FILED APILB, 1908.
980,472. I Patented Jan.3,1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADALBERT ZOLLINGER, OF LEIPZIG-EUTRITZSCH, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM 0F POPPER & COMPANY, OF LEIPZIG, GERMANY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 8, 1908.
STRING FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Serial No. 425,975.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADALBERT ZOLLINGER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Leipzig Eutritzsch, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strings for Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a cheap substitute for gut-strings for use inmusical instruments, more especially mechanically-played instruments, in which gutstrings are inappropriate since they are affected by the amount of moisture in the air and require frequent tuning which is impossible in the case of a mechanical instrument.
Strings formed according to the present invention, are illustrated in the annexed drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a string formed according to the present invention a portion of the exterior part thereof being removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification.
An elastic envelo I) obtained by reduction into a fluid state 0 gut or a similar mass, is pressed in a plastic state around a metallic wire a by means of suitable devices. In order to increase the solidity there may also be mixed with the mass fibers b After drying, the elastic mass adheres perfectly to the metal core which takes up the tension, so
that the tension of the string is not changed by humidity or change of the temperature.
The exterior of the string is soft and elastic and ossesses therefore all necessary qualities for the production of good string music.
For rotecting the metal core against rust it may e plated with tin, aluminium or other metal, or as shown in Fig. 2 surrounded by a wrapper 0 of fibrous material.
"What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A string for musical instruments comprising a metallic core and a coating composed of a lastic'mass of gut and fibrous material mo ded thereon.
2. A string for musical instruments comprisin a metallic core lated with nonrustab e metal and inclose in a plastic mass of gut and fibrous material.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ADALBERT ZOLLINGER. lVitnesses:
