ATTRNEYS CARL A. RAULF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BAKERS Toon 10 alt whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL A. RULF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bakers Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that particular. class of bakers tools known as a peel, used by bakers for carrying bakery stuff into and from the oven.
The object of my invention is to improve the peel by strengthening it; to prevent the separation of its parts by the heat and moisture in the air in the oven; to eliminate flat joints; metal or wood, plates, rivets, dowel pins, and other `means commonly used to bind the several parts together; to reduce the cost of manufacture and lengthen the working life of the tool.
The manner in which I accomplish my object is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a face elevation of the finished peel the several parts being indicated by full and do-tted lines, the handle being broken to indicate its greater length. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical edge of Fig. 1. Fig'. 5 is an enlarged face elevation of the end of the handle separated from the blade of the peel. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the parts shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 7 7 Fig. 1.
In the drawings A indicates the center portion of the blade of the peel. In the upper part of this portion is an elongated U shaped slot A1. In the center longitudinal line of the walls of this slot is a groove A2 indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 which continues in a curve corresponding with the semi-circle of the base of the slot. Inserted in this slot is the end of a handle B. The part B1 is square in section as shown in Fig. 7 and round in the extended part B2. In the center line of the length of the part B1 and extending around the end isa groove B3 corresponding with the groove. A2 in the slot A1 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5. In this groove is a metal tongue C. This tongue is notched near the open ends and secured to the part B1 by staples C1, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
Specification of Letters Patent.

The part B1 with the tongue secured in it is forced into the slot A1, and the tongue into the groove A2. Extending through the part A and the part B1 of the handle `immediately above the upper end of the tongue, is a screw bolt D and nut D1 which vis adapted to secure the part A and the part B1 of the handle firmly together as one solid part, but separable for insertion and removal. The edges A3 of the center part A are parallel. Each edge is finished with a dovetail tenen A4. The sides of these tenons taper gradually from the top of the handle part to the thin end of the blade. This" gradual tapering of the tenons and the corresponding tapering of the corresponding dovetail mortises in the edges of the side pieces A5 and A? is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 7. This tapering of the tenons and mortises is the important feature of my invention. Extending through the parts A, A, A, is a bolt E; one end of this bolt is threaded and provided with a nut E1. The other end E2 is bent at right angles to the length of the bolt. The bore through which this bolt extends, is enlarged at the ends to admit the nut and the bent end of the bolt as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
`When the several portions of the peel are prepared as described they are assembled and secured together as ollows2-The tenoned and mortised edges of the three parts forming the blade are dressed with glue. The small ends of the tenons of the part A are inserted into the wide ends of the mortises into the parts A5 and A6, and the three parts are wedged iirmly together by longitudinal pressure. The bolt E is then inserted through the three parts and made secure by the nut E1. The blade is then trimmed to shape and finished, the dovetail oints being perceptible only by the shading of the grain of the wood. The handles are notinserted in the blade until delivered to the bakers who when ready lto use a new peel then insert the handle in the slot A1, the tongue sliding into the groove therein. The bolt D is then inserted and screwed home by the nut D1.
The slots A, grooves A2, handles, tenons, mortises and bolts are of standard sizes to form duplicates so that one handle may serve for several blades, as the blades are burned, broken or worn out, while the handles remain serviceable.
It is obvious that the edges of the center portion may be mortised and the side portions finished with tenons; or that one side of the center portion only may be finished With a tenon and the other side be mortised as illustrated in F ig. 7 without departing from the principle of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to these variations in location of the tenons and mortises as herein described and shown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentfirs 1. In a tool of the kind described, a tapering bladevadapted to be attached to a handle, said blade consisting of a plurality of parts joined longitudinally, the longitudinal edges joined, kbeing shaped to constitute a longitudinal dovetailed joint, the tenon and mortise thereof forming said joint tapering transversely from end to end, said tapering corresponding with the taper of the major part of the length of the blade, the parts being thereby adapted to be wedged together longitudinally as described.
ing provided with Wedge shaped longitudi-` nal edges for interlocking engagement with the grooved edges of the outer sections, fastening means for holding said sections in rigid relation, a shank extension carried by the intermediate section'and provided with a longitudinal slot the sides of Which are grooved, a handle extension fitted invsaid slot and provided with Wedge. shaped edges for interlocking' engagement Y with the grooves of said slot, and fasteningineans extending through said shank extension and said handleextension for holdingthe same in rigid relation.
