Be it known that I, CHARLES l Enr, a citizen orn the United States of Aint-rica, residing in the citv-v of East Orange, county of Essex. State of ew Jersey. have invented a certsin new and useful lmprorement in Staves for Folding Umbrellas, following is a specification.

Upon the upper statt' section is a sleeve l0 which is of the sarne diameteras the lower statt section This sleeve 10 slides down over the pivoted ointbetween the two stall sections and iolds the stall' sections in line, w hile engagingY J-shape points and recesses 11, l2 on the meeting ends guide the parts into proper position and resist rotary movement at tine joint. the sleeve 10 downwardly and locks the parts rigidly together. The upper statt section 8 is slotted at 13 to permit the sleeve 10 to slide upon it without disturbing the position of the spring catch li which is carried by the sleeve l() and projects on both sides through the slot 13. A cross pin l5 in the sleeve 10 also passes through the slot 13 and limits the movement of the sleeve lt) on the section 8. The lt'lwer stall section is provided with the usual lower spring catch 16.

The statt can be folded into approximately half its full length b v first unscrewing the tip 9. The stalll sections are then drawn dtm'nwardly with relation to the sleeve 10, separating the locking points il. l2 and exposing the pivote-d joint between the stall' sections. when the Vlower stall section can be folded back on the upper statt' section, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. Q. The removal of the handle, `which can be done either before or at'ter the tip removed, completes the reduction in length of the statt' and brings the folded stall into about halt its full length.

To reestablish the statt, the sections are straightened. pushed upwardly into the sleeve l() and the tip f) screwed on to the end of S where it projects` through l0, locking the parts together. The handle can be re placed either before or after the stattx sections are locked in line.
