4Letters Patient No. 98,019, dated .December 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' LOW-WL'ATR i INDICATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmalsing part of the ganse To all whom 'it may' concern: i
Be it known that I,- WILLIAM A. BRADFORD, of
Cincinnati, in the4 county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementiu Low-Water Indicators; and I, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of thefsame, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, which is an axial section, partly `in elevation, of an apparatus embodying my invent-ion, attached to asteam-boiler. 4 j
M y invention relates to that class of low-water indicators whichembodiesa stationary pendent valve, adjustableiu position, surrounded by a tube, which is ii'tted at its upper end with an alarm-whistle and valvethe. pendent valve-stemand its connections, by which the valve is not only rendered adjustable, but is4 locked or fastened rigidly by the same device at any required po'iut of adjustment. i
A is a pipe connecting the.indicatingt-mechantsm with t le boiler.-
It passes through aperture C C, in the periphery o the boi ler, which is large enough to permit 4steam to pass around the said pipe A into the safety-valve B. The pipe L connects with the pipe A, as shown. 1) D arerods, secured firmly bythe nuts M M to the plates E and E', both above and below said plates. The plate E is' permanently attached to the framei work,`as showfmandthe purpose of the plate E; rods- `1) D, and nuts M M, is to holdl the plate E' securely in place, as shown'. 1 K ils a tube passing through the whistle P.
' I` al stem, passingthrough and titt' 1g neatly in the tube K, u which it is intended to slide whenthe expansion hereinafter referred to'takes place;v
' 'lhe stem Il has a screw-thread chasedupon its npper end, andis provided with adjusting-nuts N N, one on each side ot' the stationary bar E, threngh which the valve-stem passes.`
The valve isadju'sted by means of the nuts N, and by the same means is locked or rigidly secured at any point of. adjustmenn-in such Va secure manner that the valve cannot be forced up or down without the aid of a wrench, 'or be liable to `alteration or displacement by meddlesome persons.
Hi-'is'an inverted valve, the conical sides of which f PP' is a circular aperture, through which the steam passes when it escapes, and thence comes into contact `with the whistle P.
R is an ordinary globe-valve.
L) is a lock or case` to be locked, which is intended to secure the parts above shown from the control of the engineer. A p
S is a pipe, which is a continuation of the pipe A, and which is regulated by the globe-valve T, and through which it is intended' to take the water from the boiler for the extinguishment ot' accdentzd fires.
The operation of the low-water indicator herein shown, ol' which my invention forms a part, is as follows:
The lower end of thepipe A is tov he placed in such position in the boiler, below which the water should never be permitted to go.A
-VVhe'n the water in the boiler gets lower than the thepipe L, and will, in a very short time, expand said pipe L, the result ot' which will be that the' seat H ot' the stationary valve Hwill be raised from-the valve, when the steam will escape between the seat and the valve, andthenceout'through thecircular opening Pf, where it willV come in contact with the edge ot' the whistle P, and give the-'low-water alarm.
Of' cour'seit will be understo dthat the globe-valve '1 is sluit, and the globe-valve R is Open, duringthe operation just described.
The provision of the .screw-tlneaded valve-stem I and nuts `N N gives the means for the necessary adjustinento'f the valve H', and is of such a character that when once-:adjusted and locked bythe said nuts N alteratiou o r. displacement by unauthorized persons is diliicult and not likely to occur, aud in this respect dit'- fers from existing devices for the adjustment of the valve H.
Having'thus dscribedhmy invention, That I claimas new, and desire to secule h v Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the expalision-tube L, fitted with a steam-whistle, I", and valve-seat H, the peudent stationary valve H', when said valve has a screwtln'eadeds'tem,-1', and adjusting-nuts N N, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose specifled. i
- W. A. BRADFORD.
