Specification of Letters Patent.
SWITCH.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW GERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in switches and has for its object the production of a switch which will not derail a ear or be injured by the passage of a train thereover when the switch is not set for such passage.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a switch embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an enlarged section on line a' @c of Fig. l, Fig. 3, au enlarged section on line g/ y of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, an enlarged section on line z .e of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, an enlarged elevation of the threaded rod employed in connecting the switch tongues with their shifting bar.
In the preferred construction as illustrated in the drawings the switch tongues 1 are connected to their shifting or operating bar 2 by means of threaded rods 3 flanged at their outer ends where they are secured to switch tongues by means of bolt 4. At their inner ends rods 3 pass through guide sleeves 5 of square casings 6 which are secured to bar 2. Within casing 6 rods 3 carry square nuts 7 threaded thereon and serving to imprison springs 8 in either end of said casing. A square plate 9 is placed in the end of casing 6 opposite to rod 3 and bearing against the end of the corresponding spring 8. A threaded rod 10 bears against the outer face of plate 9 and serves, in conjunction with nut 7, to adjust the tension of springs 8. By this construction it will be seen that the switch tongues may be readily operated in the usual manner by manipulating bar 2 and that in case a train passes over said switch on the tracks for which said switch is not set both of said tongues are free to yield to permit the passage thereof and this is so no matter which track the train comes over, each tongue being free to yield in either direction.
When long switch tongues are employed a supplemental connecting bar 2 is secured to said tongues at some distance from bar 2. Bar 2 is connected to one switch tongue at one end by means of bolts 4 and to the other tongue by means of a threaded rod 3 mounted in casing G secured to said bar as before.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with the switch tongues of a switch, of a. shifting bar; rectangular casings secured to either end of said bar; two springs in each of said casings; nuts fitting within said casings between said springs; slidable threaded rods engaging said nuts and secured to said tongues; plates in the ends of said casings opposite to said rods; and threaded rods for adjusting said plates, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the switch tongues of a switch, of a shifting bar; rectangular' easings secured to either end of said bar; two springs in each of said casings; nuts fitting within said casings between said springs; slidable threaded rods engaging said nuts and secured to said tongues; plates in the ends of said casings opposite to said rods; threaded rods for adjusting said plates; a supplemental connecting bar having one end secured to one switch tongue; a rectangular casing secured to the other end of said connecting bar; two springs in said casing; a nut fitting within said casing between said springs; and a slidable threaded rod engaging said nut and secured to the other switch tongue, substantially as described.
