To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED P. FINLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rails and Nut-Locks for Fish-Plate Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
Railway-rails to which this invention in part relates, composed of longitudinal sections riveted or otherwise secured together have heretofore been made and used to a limited extent. The advantages of this kind of rail over the solid open-jointed type in general use is, that the ends of any two longitudinal sections can always be joined or brought to 'ether at or near the middle of a third section, so that there will be throughout the whole length of the track no open joints, or joints extending across the entire rail, and consequently, as the wheels hear about equally on each section of the rail, the concussion or hammering caused by the wheels in passing over open jointed rails, with the attendant shock and injury to the rolling-stock, is almost entirely prevented.
This invention relates also to railwayrail joints of the class wherein means are provided for locking the nuts of the fishplate bolts and preventing them from turning backward or becoming loosened thereon; the object being to simplify and improve devices of this character and increase the etficiency without additional expense or complication of parts; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sectional rail and a rail-joint with nut locking device embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing its adaptability to ordinary T rails. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the base and web portions of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a perspective of the looking terminals of solid rail sections, and Fig. 5 represents a transverse vertical sectional view of the parts attached.
Referring to Figs. 1, 3, and 5 of the drawings, the rail-base A and the web B are of the usual form and construction except that the upper portion of the web is provided with a laterally projecting rib C; its outer side being inclined inward and downward from the top side and having an upwardly projecting flange 1) which forms a partof the head portion of the rail. The head is divided at the center longitudinally and composed of two parts D and E, the former being permanent and the latter removable; both formed respectively with inwardly inclined faces F that abut in the completed rail at the transverse center thereof. The tread portion E has a downward projection E terminating in a bend inwardly E extending its whole length forming a channel that conforms to and embraces the outer edge of the web C preventing vertical displacement. The head portion E is additionally secured to the projecting rib C by a series of tapering pins that pass through perforations G, and through perforations G in projecting rib C arranged in the same relative positions and equi-distant in all the tread parts and flange parts, and hence will all fit. The perforations G angle outwardly from the top side of the head portion E and inwardly through rib C, and the metal pins when driven through them are bent in conformity; and their lower extremity coming in contact with the web B clenches them as shown dotted in Fig. 5, preventing them from working out. H indicates ordinary fish-plates, I bolts securin them in the usual manner; they are attached before the tread sections have been as sembled and when the movable portion E is added the part E rests upon the top side of nuts I preventing them from turning.
In Figs. 2 and 4, J represents ordinary T rails having a portion of the head cut away at the ends forming sections as shown in Fig. 4, which extend beyond the ends of the fish plate H and a perforation Gr passes through the flange C After the fish plates H have been attached in the usual manner a short section E conforming to that of E is placed in the cut-away portions of the rail ends and secured by pins driven through the perforations G and G The lower edge of the section E rests on the top side of the nuts I and they are locked,

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of my invention, together with what I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; and the advantages resultant from its use will be manifest to all who are conversant with the general class of devices to which the same appertains.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A railway-rail comprising a permanent portion, and connecting devices for the rib and head extending therethrough, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A railway-rail comprising a removable head portion and an outwardly projecting rib portion, both perforated vertically at regular intervals, the rib being flanged upwardly forming the outer part of the railhead, and the removable head portion extending downwardly and inwardly embracing the outwardly projecting rib and resting on the top side of the nuts of the fish-plate bolts effecting a lock therefor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In combination with two abutting rails, each having a portion of the head cut away, of a removable head portion fitting thereon and making a flush joint therewith, and connecting devices, a downwardly and inwardly projecting flange on the removable head section resting 'on the top side of the nuts of the fish-plate bolts effecting a lock therefor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
