WATER-HEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD A. GEURINK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tater- Heaters, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best inode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to water heaters of the type frequently found in connection with hot water tanks for residential use. Heaters of this general type comprise a water container, a casing around the container, and a burner located below the same.
My invention relates in particular to the provision of a sectional water container of such an improved construction that the water may have free circulation through each section, and through the container as a whole.
An improved arrangement of connections whereby the water container may be drained whenever desired, is an additional feature of the heater.
The invention herein described and claimed is the same as that originally set forth in certain of the claims of my application for United States Patent Serial No. 494,982, led May 10, 1909.
To the accomplishment of these and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing :-Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a heater embodying my invention, the water container proper being shown in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the container on the line 2 2, Fig. l.

lar sections a superposed one above the other, their number being such as to provide a container of sufficient capacity for the particular requirement. Each section of said container comprises a central chamber a. A plurality of chambers a2 radiate from the central chamber, and the walls a3 between such radiating chambers alternately approach within a greater and a less distance of the center of the section, whereby the tendency to clog at the center is overcome. The bottom walls of the several radiating chamhers are inclined downwardly toward the center of the section, with the exception of one chamber a5 in the lowermost section of the series. This loweimost chamber is constructed so that its bottom inclines in the opposite direction. This chamber is also provided with openings a a7 in its side and bottom, respectively; to the opening a" is connected a supply pipe A2, and with the opening a7 is connected a drain pipe. 'lhe discharge pipe a4 for the water after it has been heated by passage through the container, is connected with the center of the uppermost section of the container in the usual fashion. Below the lowermost section of the series will be placed a burner B adapted, generally, for use with gas as a fuel. A casing D of general cylindrical foi'm surrounds the water container.
The water container is supported by a suitable stand C. Fitted on this stand is a bracket c having its outer end formed with a vertically disposed pipe c. This pipe c is designed to be connected with the opening a7 in the bottom section of the container and thus serves as a drain pipe. The lower end of this pipe may be provided with a plug as shown, or with a pet-cock. Extending inwardly from the pipe portion of the bracket is a short arm c2 with horizontally disposed projections. It is designed that the burner shall lhave depending lugs on its under side adapted to engage the horizontal projections on the arm c2, which thus serves to partially support and center the burner. Extending outwardly also from the pipe section of the bracket, aie two vertically spaced flanges c3. flanges are hinged two intergeared casing sections of semi-cylindrical form, which are thus adapted to swing in a horizontal plane. These two sections when closed,'serve to inclose the burner B.
Between these It will be clearly seen that the improved form which I give to each of the series of sections of the water container, allow's of an extremely free circulation through the container. This form effectively provides against any clogging at the center of' the section, and the entire container, including each individual section thereof, may be quickly and efficiently drained of its contents through pipe c.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention l. In a water heater of the class described, a water container made up of a plurality of centrally y connected sections, each section comprising a central chamber and a plurality of chambers radiating therefrom, the bottom walls of such radiating chambers inclining downwardly toward the center of the section, with the exception of the lowermost section of the series, such lowermost section having a radiating chamber inclining in the opposite direction.
2. In a water heater of the class described, a water container made up of a plurality of centrally-connected sections, each section comprising a central chamber and a plurality of chambers radiating therefrom, the walls between such radiating chambers alternately approaching within a greater and less distance of the center of the section, and the bottom walls of such radiating chambers inclining downwardly toward the center of the section, with the exception of the lowermost section of the series, such lowermost section having a radiating chamber inclining in the opposite direction.
8. In a water heater of the class described, a water container made up of a plurality of centrally-connected sections, each section comprising a central chamber and a plurality of chambers radiating therefrom, the walls between such radiating chambers alternately approaching within a greater and less distance of the center of the section, the bottom walls of such radiating chambers inclining downwardly toward the center of the section with the exception of the lowermost section, such lowermost section having a radiating chamber inclining in the opposite direction and provided with an opening in its side and bottom respectively, and supply and drain connections for such side and bottom openings, respectively.
