Description

"JQHN' -o'HANDos Woonnnno, or rrrrsnne, PENNSYLVANIA.
'Laim Patent No. 98,004, daad DecanterA 14, 1869.
*Mag- IMPROVBMENT 1N INTERCHANGEABLE :Boom AND SHOE-Hanns.
The Schedule referred to inv these Letters Patient and making part of the same.
Toall whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, -JonN CHANDos WooDHEAD, of Pittsburg, in vthe `,county of Allegheny, andState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Boot and Shoe-Heels; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof; reference being `had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters 'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and use of devices, whereby boot or shoeheels may be detachable and changeable.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a plan of the upper part of a divisional boot or shoe-hee1. l
I .figure 2, a section of one form 'of myinvention. lFigure 3, a section of another form thereo v Figure 4, a plan oi' one of the devices used.
l Figure 5, a side elevation thereof..
Figure 6, a side elevation of a trimmed heel. Figure 7, a section of another form of ,my invention. Letters of reference on the different -igures denote I parts. Y
I construct my heels `in two changeable parts, A and B.
In the upper portion A is placed a metallic plate, A, havingtwo raised sockets,A" and A", said plate A? being held in place by tacks, pegs, or screwsnor maybe held down by the "superincumbent layer of leather. The socket A" `has internal female-screw threads therein, and 'the-socket A has a plain open-v `ing through the saine.
The lower portion lB is provided with a metallic plate, B1, which may be attached thereto by tacks,
, pegs, or may be heldin place by the superincumbent `layer of leather,
This plate lltI is provided nwitha dowelpin'B", pro- "jecting upward therefrom, in'such a manner, that when both portions of the heel are placed in juxtaposition, `the .dowel-pin B2 will penetrate through the and engage 'thethreads of the sooketA, holding the two portions, A and B, together, while the dowel-pin B2 preventsanylateral movement of the lower pol-,
. tion.
Another mod'e of my invention consists in the heel being constructed in' two portions, I) and E, thelower v portion I) having an ordinary gimlet-pointed woodscrew, D1., passing through the saine, which screws into the upper lE, which has' a recess, E', inwhich Y rest sa dowel-pin, D2, consisting of the body of an ordinary gimlet-pointed wood-screw, screwed into the lower'part D, the portion that enters the recess E having thethread filed on" or removed in any suitable manner.
Another modeof myinvention consists in the heel ,being made in two portions, F and G, the upper portion F being provided with a metallic plate, F1, onV
which are two sockets, F2, projecting therefrom, said sockets having internal female-screw threads'. The lower portion G has a-correspondingplate, G1, with sockets, G2, thereon, said sockets having plain holes thereimthrough which pass ordinary screw-bolts H,
the portion of` which, passing through the sockets G?, being plain, and fitting snugly to the holes iu before-named sockets G2. The upperportion of these bolts H are provided with ordinary male-screw threads, which-engage with the female-screw threads, of the sockets F2, holding both portions, F and G, of the.
heel together.
. The deviceV used for the shaping and trimming around of changeable boot and shoe-heels, consists ot' a metallic plate, I, of the required shape of the heel. This plate I is thicker in its central part than at its edges, being so constructed, that as the different layers of leather used in building heels are hollowedor scooped ont,the curved shape of the plate will t in and around the same. each portion of a changeable heel, having holesror slots therein to lie over and suit any of the devices used for holding said portions together, which being attached together, the plat-e I forms a templet or guide for the ordinary paring-knife, so that such heels can be readily made to the required shape by mechanical sureness. The plate I also serves for guard in preventing. nails, when Adriven into the'heel, from penetrating through both portions of heel. The nails meeting the said plate I, will be blunted or clinched.
l am aware that changeable or detachable boot or shoe-heels have Ib'een heretofore used. I do not, therefore, claim the same.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a changeable boot and shoe-heel, the combinay tion of the socketed metallic plates in the upper and lower .portions of the heel, when constructed as described, and `secured in the manner set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
