Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed December 31, 1909. Serial No. 535,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALLACE LILEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Wells, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements'in churns and means for driving the same, and has for its object to produce a simple, cheap and eflicient mechanism, whereby the churning operation may be performed in an expeditious manner.
My invention, therefore, consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improvements, Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I use a frame cast in one piece and consisting of the base A having the side extensions A at the front and the side extensions A at the rear, the front standard A and the rear standard A connecting the front and rear stands and integral therewith is the top cross piece A and the intermediate cross piece A. The base A is supported by the legs A which are of pipe and flattened at their lower ends and screwed or otherwise held to the floor, and the front supports or legs A also of pipe and flattened at their lower ends are secured by screws or other means to the floor. Both front and rear legs are screwed into the base piece A at their upper ends, and while both sets diverge sidewise, the rear legs stand directly under their point of attachment and the front legs extend diagonally tothe front of the frame and extend. on each side of the churn body as will be presently explained.
The upper cross bar A and the intermediate cross bar are cored out and form a boxing or journal for shafts, the upper cross bar carrying the shaft B, while the intermediate cross bar carries the crank shaft C. On the rear end of shaft C, a crank handle D is rigidly secured by means of which the shaft may be rotated, or said handle may be replaced by a pulley to receive a belt driven by a gasolene or other suitable motor. On
the front end of shaft 0 is screwed a large gear wheel E, which meshes with a pinion F screwed on the shaft B. Beyond the pinion F a fly wheel G is securedto the shaft B, one of the spokes G of said fly wheel having a series of openings to receive the lower end of the pitman H, the lower end it of said pitman is bent and projects through one of said openings 9 and is secured by a linch pin or other suitable means. The upper end it of the pitman is also bent and projects through one of a series of openings 2' in the dasher shaft I. Said dasher shaft I fits slidably in a vertical guideway or boxing J which is secured to the base A by a lug J said boxing J being screwed to said lug. The guideway J is formed of a three sided rectangular box preferably of tin and the front or open side is closed b a hinged plate J held against the open si e of the guideway J at its lower end by a spring latch L, and at its upper end by a hook M engaging an eye m.
The main portion of the dasher shaft N or that portion which reciprocates in the guideway J is square in cross section, but the lower portion N which goes into the churn body is circular to fit the circular opening in the churn lid. To the lower end of the dasher shaft N is secured the dasher which forms the subject-matter of application, Serial No. 588,218, the same being a division of this application.
The churn body P is not described herein as it forms the subject of application, Serial No. 588,218, the same being a division of this application.
It will be noted that the pitman H is secured at its lower end to the fly wheel G and extends upwardly quite a distance and is then attached to the upper end of the dasher shaft N. By connectingthe fly wheel and dasher shaft in this manner, I am enabled to use a long pitman and consequently a slight side throw of the pitman is attained. This will cause the dasher shaft to have very little side play in the guideway or box J and consequently reduces the friction of the dasher shaft against the sides of the guideway to little or nothing. Furthermore, by connecting the pitman to the upper end of the dasher shaft, a greater range of movement of said dasher shaft will be obtained.
By the use of my improved churning mechanism I provide a device which consists of few parts, the framework being cast in one piece, and the parts are so arranged that they can be readily assembled and disassociated.
I claim 1. The churning device herein described,
comprising a framework cast in one piece secured to the front end of the upper shaft,
a pit-man secured at its lower end to the fly wheel below its center, a dasher shaft secured at the upper end to the upper end of the pitman, a rectangular guideway or boxing for said dasher shaft, a dasher at the lower end of the dasher shaft, a churn body in which said dasher works, and means for rotating the 4 intermediate shaft.
2. The churning device herein described, comprising a framework cast in a single piece, geared horizontal shafts carried by said frame, a fly wheel carried by one of the shafts, a pitman connected to said fly wheel and engaging a vertical dasher shaft at its upper end, a churn body located beneath the frame work, and a dasher at the lower end of the dasher shaft adapted to work within the churn body.
3. The churning device herein described comprising a frame-work cast in one piece and consisting of a base piece having front and rear side extensions, detachable legs secured to said side extensions, front and rear uprights, tops and intermediate cross pieces cored to receive horizontal shafts, a shaft journaled in the intermediate cross pieces, a gear wheel secured to the front end of the intermediate shaft, a pinion carried by the top shaft and meshing with the aforesaid gear wheel, a fly wheel secured to the front edge of the top shaft and having spokes, one of which is provided with a series of adjusting holes, a pitman secured at its lower end in one of said adjusting holes, a dasher shaft having at or near its upper end a series of adjusting holes in one of which the upper end of the pitman is secured, a rectangular guide box in which said dasher shaft has a vertically sliding movement, a hinged front wall secured to said guide box, said guide box detachably secured to the base of the framework, a dasher secured to the lower end of the dasher shaft, a churn body located beneath the framework, and means for imparting rotary motion to the intermediate shaft.
