Be it known that I, FREDERICK WESTER- BECK, a citizen of the United States of Amer ic'a, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Cans, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description, re erence being had to'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in sheet metal cans of the description commonly known as friction top cans, and it has for its object the production of a can of this description whereby an efficient seal between the cover and the top of the can may be effected, and also whereby the cover of the can may be efliciently locked to the top of the can body, thereby preventing all liability of leakage from the can, and the separation of the cover from the can body until force is properly applied thereto for; the se aration of these parts.

In the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the main part of the bodyof my can, and 2 the top part of said body secured to said main part. The top part is provided with an annular neck 3' having an outwardly jutting vertical portion 4, above which is an outwardly flaring flange 5 having a flat outer face,the flange being bent inwardly and downwardly at'lts upper end to furnish an annular lip 6 that occupies a position abovethe flange and 'is separated therefrom to furnish a pocketbetween the.

This packing strip, which may be of any suitable material, is preferably made of a material that will expand when moistened, whereby the thickness of the packing strip is increased when subjected to moisture. The packing strip rests initially, or when put in place, in the neck of the can body so that its lower edge extends beyond the bottom of the flange 5 within the neck of the can body, and [is adapted to be-pressed outwardly against the jutting vertical portion at of the can body neck under pressure exerted thereagainst by the can cover upon its entrance into said neck. While I have stated that the packing strip is preferably of an expanding material, I do not wish to limit myself to the use of such material in making the packing strip, as it may be made of rubber or other suitable material that is not subject to expanding due to the subjection of it to moisture. a v
The cover of my can comprisesa bottom or horizontal portion 8, a verticalannular member 9 extending upwardly from said bottom portion, an outturned rim 10 at the top of the vertical member, and a downturned annular flange 11 carried by the bottom, and provided at its lower edge with a head 12 within which is-a wire ring 13. In applying the cover of my can to the neck of the can body, said cover is introduced into the can body neck so that its vertical member 9 will press against the packing strip 7 and carry the lower ortion of said strip outwardly against the utting portion 4 over the annular neck 3 of the can body neck whereby the packing strip becomes tightly clamped or..pressed between said jutting portion of the can body neck and the vertical member of the can cover. The vertical member of the can'cover isof suflicient depth to provide for its contacting with the portion of the can body neck beneath the point to which the packing strip extends and beneath the juttin portion 4, thereby furnishing frictiona contact between the cover and the can body neck. As the can cover is .introduced into the can body neck, the "bead 12 carried by the flange of the cover rim strikes against the upper end of the flaring flange 5 at the upper end of the neck .of the can body, and said bead and flange are sprung outwardly to a sufiicient de cc to permit the descent of the bead a must the flat outer face of said flaring an e. Then, as the cover continues to descend, t e flange 11 and its head spring inwardly and descend on the fiat face of the flaring flange until the cover has been completely seated -and the bead has'reached a position where it will act to lock and restrain the cover from upward movement and hold it firmly in position in the neck of the can body. The wire rin 13 serves to reinforce the bead 12 in or er that it may prcperly perform its office.
I claim: 4 v
1. The combination in a sheet metal can, of abody having aneck provided at its upper .end with an inturned and downwardly extending flange providing anannular lip, a flexible annular outwardly flaring flat packing stri held between the body of the neck and sai lip, and a cover insertible into said neck to bear against said packing strip.
2 The combination in a sheet metal can, of a body having a neck provided with an outwardly flaring flange having a fiat outer face, a exible annular outwardly flaring flat packing strip located interiorly of said neck and secured thereto at its upper end, and a cover insertibleinto said neck to bear against the lower portion of said packing strip beneath the flaring flange of the neck,
and having at its upper end a rim extending acrossthe flange 0 said neck and provided with adownwardly extending flange having a bead arranged for engagement with the flat'outer face of the flange of the .neck of the eanbody. v
3. The combination in a sheet metal can, of a body having a neck provided with an outwardly flaring flange having a flat outer face, a flexible annular outwardly flaring flat packing strip located interiorly df said neck and secured thereto at its upper end, andv a cover insertible into said neck to bear against the lower portion of said packing strip beneath the flaring flange of the neck, and having at its upper end a rim extendin across the flange of said neck and provide with a downwardly curved flange-terminating at its lower end in a bead for engage ment with the flat outer face of the flange of the can body neck.
