TIME-RECORDER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnoon SOKOLOV, a citizen of Russia, and residing at New York city, Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'lime-Itecorders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a time recorder of novel construction more particularly adapted for accurately recording the arrival and departure of workmen, clerks and other employees, though it is also adapted for controlling the beats of policemen, watchmen, etc. The recorder is of simple construction, of compact form and is not liable to become disarranged either accidentally or intentionally.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a sectional front View of my improved time recorder, Fig. 2 a vertical section on line 2-2, Fig. 3, Fig. 3 a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1 with some of the parts omitted, and Fig. a detail of the means for advancing the hour recording disk.
My improved time recorder comprisesessentially a clock 10, from the case of which depends a box or extension 11 inclosing the time recording mechanism proper. The latter is actuated through the arbor 12 of the second hand of clock 10, said arbor carrying a toothed wheel 13 meshing into wheel 14 the diameter of which is twice the diameter of wheel 13, so that wheel 14 will make one revolution for every two revolutions of wheel 13. To the shaft 15 of wheel 14 is secured a cam 16 which. is engaged by the free end of an escapement lever 17 fulcrumed to casing 11 at 18, lever 17 being held in permanent engagement with cam 16 by means of a spring 19. The anchor 20 of lever 17 engages an escapeinent wheel 21 secured to an arbor 22 which receives rotary movement from a spring barrel 23 by gear wheels 24-, 25, 26, 27 and 28. To arbor 22 is keyed a disk 29 which is connected by a flexible typetape 30 with a disk 31 loosely mounted upon a shaft 32. Tape 30 is provided with raised or embossed figures 33 representing the re versed consecutive numbers 1 to 60. In order to prevent the tape from slipping, disks 29 and 31 are provided with peripheral protuberances 34 which are adapted to enter the inner cavities of the raised tape-figures.
To the arbor of pinion 27 is fastened a cam 35 which is engaged by the free end of a two-arm lever 36 fulcrumed at 37 and in- Specification of Letters Patent.

fluenced by a spring 38. To the other end of lever 36 is pivoted. a pawl 39 adapted to engage a ratchet wheel 40 which is fast on shaft 32 and has twenty-four teeth. An adjusting screw 41 limits the play of pawl 39 while a spring-influenced detent 42 prevents the rotation of shaft in the wrong direc tion.
Flanking disk 31, there are keyed to shaft 32 a pair of disks 43, 44 of which disk 43 is provided. at its circumference with two successive series of the reversed consecutive numbers 112, representing the 24 hours of a day. Disk 44 carries at its circumference in longitudinal alinement with said numbers twelve figures A. M. and twelve figures P. M. so to indicate day and night time. The diameters of disks 31, 43, 44 are such that the embossed figures of tape 30 are flush with the raised figures of disks 43, 44 so as to permit the ready production of an imprint upon a time card through a h ammer 45, as hereinafter more fully described.
The several motion transmitting elements of the time recorder are so dimensioned that shaft 32 together with disks 43, 44 makes one complete revolution during each twenty four hours, the movement being so timed that pinion 27 makes one complete rotation during each hour. Cam 35 is so cut, that at the end of each hour the pin 46 of lever 36 passes from the raised section of the cam to the reduced section thereof, thereby advancing, through pawl 39 and ratchet wheel 40, disks 43, 44 through one twenty-fourth of a complete rotation. In this way, at the end of every hour, a different hour-figure will be brought opposite hammer 45, while disks 29, 31 and tape 30 are so timed and dimensioned that the tape leaps forward at the end of each minute through a length which equals the distance between two adjoining figures of said tape.
The spring 47 of barrel 23 is connected at its inner end to a shaft 48, which has a squared end 49 adapted to be engaged by a suitable winding key, while any return movement of the shaft is prevented by a relatively fixed ratchet wheel 50 engaged by a spring-influenced detent 51.
The printing device is shown to consist of hammer 45 fulcrumed at 52 and influ enced by a comparatively strong spring 53. At its lower end, hammer 4-5 has a fork 54 which is engaged by a pawl 55 fulcrumed to a hand lever 56 at 57 and influenced by a spring 58. Hand lever 56 pivoted at 59 and is normally held in its raised position by a spring 60. In order to normally hold hammer 45 off disks 43, a l and tape 30, a comparatively weak fiat spring 61 is provided as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
In use, the workman introduces his card into opening or pocket 62 so that it will descend between parts 30, l -3Al and JJ) so as to finally rest upon an abutment Lever 56 is then depressed, during which operation pawl by impinging against the upper prong of fork Set will tilt hammer 45 against the action of spring 53, until the lower prong of fork 5t will cause pawl to slip ofi" the upper prong. Spring 53 is thus free to throw hannner l?) against the time card thus producing the desired time mark thereon. It will be seen by the construction described, novel and efi'ective means are provided for stamping time cards with the act hour and minutes oi arrival or departure. he device is further so constructed that its operative parts are unaccessible to the workmen, so that any tampering and the formation of fraudulent marks is prevented.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a clock, an escapement wheel controlled thereby, a first disk connected to said wheel and having peripheral protuberances, a second disk having peripheral protuberances, and a tape having raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the disk-protuberances.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a clock, an escapement wheel controlled thereby, a first disk connected to said wheel and having peripheral protuberances, a second disk having peripheral protuberances, a metal tape having raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the disk-protuberances, time-recording disks flanking the second disk, a cam controlled by the escapement, and means actuated by said cam for intermittently advancing said time-recording disks.
A device of the character described, comprising a clock, an escapement wheel controlled thereby, a first disk connected to said wheel and having peripheral protuberances, a second disk having peripheral protuberances, a tape having raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the disk-protuberances, timerecording disks flanking said second disk, a cam controlled by the escapement, a lever engaging the cam, and a ratchet wheel actuated by the lever and. connected to the time-recording disks.

A device of the character described, comprising a clock, an escapement wheel controlled thereby, a first disk connected to said wheel and having peripheral protuberances, a second disk having peripheral protuberances, a tape havin raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the diskprotuberances, a card-receiving pocket adjoining the tape, and manually actuated printing means adapted to partly enter said pocket.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a clock, an escapement wheel controlled thereby, a first disk connected to said wheel and having peripheral protuberances, a second disk having peripheral protuberances, a tape having raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the disk-protuberances, a card-receiving pocket adjoining the tape, and a manually actuated springinfilienced printing hammer adapted to enter said pocket.
In a device of the character described, a pair of disks having oeripheral protuberances. and a tape having raised figures and cavities below said figures that are adapted to receive the disk-profuberances.
