RIBBON-HOLDING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL L. FORD, of Pequot, Crow Wing county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in holders and clasps and particularly to ribbon holders, the object of the invention being to provide a spring device for holding the ribbon on the spool and a device that is capable of attachment to spools and ribbon of different width.
A further object is to provide a holder which is capable of quick and convenient attachment to a spool and is readily detachable whenever desired.
The invention consists generally in a telescoping device adapted to bear on the ribbon and the periphery of the spool and having I means yieldingly attaching it to the spool.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a ribbon holder with my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the spool, showing the manner of mounting the device thereon.
In the drawing, 2 represents a spool having a head 3 and made of any suitable material, preferably straw or pasteboard, and on which a ribbon 4 is wound in the usual way. The holder which I prefer to employ consists of a tube 5 having a depending end G adapted for attachment to one end of a coil spring 7 the other end of which is attached to a hook 8 having a long, curved end or point 9 that is adapted to be thrust through the center of the head 8 of the spool. This hook holds the device in place on the spool and owing to its long point cannot be accidentally detached. A rod l0 is provided to telescope with the tube 5 and has a downwardly turned outer end ll that I is attached to a spring corresponding to the one described having a hook similar to the hook 8 and designated by the same reference numerals. The rod 10, while adapted to slide in the tube 5, has frictional contact therewith sufficient to prevent them from accidentally separating and may be very easily adjusted to adapt the device for spools of. different sizes. The springs hold the tube and the rod with a yielding pressure against the surface of the ribbon so that there will be no danger of the ribbon unwinding, but it 1clin be easily removed from the spool when so The device is capable of convenient attachment to various tubes or spools and because of its adjustable character can be very readily applied to spools of different sizes.
I claim as my invention l. A ribbon holder comprising two tele- I scoping members, the inner surface of one member being in frictional contact with the outer surface of the other member, said frictional contact preventing the accidental movement of one member upon the other but permitting them to be pushed together or pulled apart, and yielding means attached to the ends of said members and adapted to engage the heads of a ribbon spool, for the purpose specified.
2. A ribbon holder comprising a tube having an inwardly turned end, a rod also having an inwardly turned end and slidable within said tube and in frictional engagement therewith, and yielding means attached to the inwardly turned ends of said tube and rod and having means for connection with the heads of a ribbon spool.
