Be it known that we, JAMES KING and HERBERT C. Knrrrox, said HERBERT C. Knir'roN being a subject of Great Britain and said JAMES IZlNG being a citizen of the United States, both residing at hlontclair, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to lifting devices, and is particularly adapted for use as a golf marker to effect the easy and quick extraction of the golf balls from the hole of the putting green.

I he object of the invention resides in the production of a device of the character named which when applied to the hole of the putting green will enable the balls to be easily extracted from said hole without necessitating the stooping of the player or handling of the ball with the hand.

A further object of the invention resides in providing a device of the character described which will be simple in construction, efficient in use and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and install.

lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combin-ation of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which;

Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device showing same applied in position in the hole of a putting green; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of a slidable extracting member of the device; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of a modified form of the slidable extracting member of the device; and, Fig. at, a detail perspective view of still another modified form of the slidable extracting member of the device.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the putting green and B the hole thereof; said hole being provided with the usual base plate C. Extending centrally through the hole B and having its lower end embedded in the base of said hole is an upright 5, the upper end of which is provided with a gripping handle 6. A sign 7 is secured to the upright 5 in any suitable manner just be neath the handle 6 as is usual in golf links. Slidably mounted upon the upright 5 is a tube 8, the lower end of which is provided with a downwardly inclined circular flange 9 adapted to be disposed across the transverse area of the hole 13. The upper end of the tube 8 is provided with a small circular flange 10 to afford a grip for the hand when it is desired to raise the member 8.

In operation it will be apparent that when a ball enters the hole B it will rest upon the upper face of the flange 9. Then said ball is so disposed it will be apparent that should the tube 8 be moved upwardly on the up- ;right 5 the said ball will be raised in unison with the flange 9 until the outer edge of said flange reaches the level of the green A, when the downwardly inclined face of the flange 9 will cause said ball to be thrown outwardly away from the hole B; the operation just described serving to both raise the ball out of the hole and throw same laterally away from the edge thereof.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, the sliding extractor is constructed of two parallel spaced rods 11 and 12 which are secured at their upper and lower ends to the rings 13 and 14: respectively, the upper ends of said rods being extended beyond the ring 13 and bent laterally to form gripping fingers 15, while the lower ends thereof are extended beyond the ring 14L and bent laterally in downward inclination to form a support for a perforated flange 16 corresponding to the flange 8 shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will of course be understood that the application and use of the sliding extractor illustrated in Fig. 3 is the same as the sliding extractor illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

While one particular form of carrying the invention into practice has been illustrated and described it will be apparent that same may be varied as to details of construction without in any way departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

In the modifled form shown in Fig. 4 the sliding extractor is constructed of two parallel spaced rods 17 and 18 which are secured at their upper and lower ends to the rings 19 and 20 respectively with the upper end of said rods extended beyond the ring 19 all. 979,313

and bent laterally to form gripping fingers 2i, while the lower ends thereof are extended beyond the ring and bent laterally in downward inclination to form a partial support for a flange F corresponding to the flange 9 of Figs. 1 and 2, and the flange 16 of Fig. 3. Said flange F is formed of a plurality of wire strands which have their upper ends secured to the ring 20 and their lower ends connected. together by a ring 23.

in case it is desired to construct the device so that the upright 5 and the sliding ex tractor may be simultaneously removed from the hole by a movementof the upright 5 there is provided a pin which is mounted in the upright 5 just beneath the lower face of the flange 9. By this construction it will be apparent that when the upright 5 is removed the pin 2t will in turn engage the lower face of the flange 9 and lift the sliding extractor in unison with said upright. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the pin Q-t may be mounted in the upright just beneath the rings 13 and 19. This last mentioned disposition of the pin Q-t will also serve to remove the sliding extractor simultaneously with the upright as will be apparent.

What is claimed is:

1. A golf marker comprising an upright. for insertion in the hole of a putting green. and means farried by said upright and movable independently thereof for extracting a golf ball from said hole.

2. A golf marker comprising an upright for insertion in the hole of a putting green, and means carried by said upright and movable inde endently thereof for extracting a golf ball from said hole and for shifting same laterally thereof.

3. A golf marker comprising an upright for insertion in the hole of a putting green,

A. golf marker comprising an upright for insertion in the hole of a putting green a member slidably mounted on said upright, a perforated flange on said member adapted to be disposed across the transverse. area of said hole, whereby balls entering said hole will be extracted therefrom by said flange when said member is moved upwardly.

T. A golf marker comprising an upright for insertion in the hole of a putting green, a member slidably mounted on said upright, means carried by said member for extracting a golf ball from said hole by the upward movement of said member and means car ried by the upright for moving the sliding member in unison therewith when said upright is withdrawn from the hole.
