Letters Patent N 97,912, dated December 14', 1869.
' COAL-STOVE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thevaame ,To allivhom it may concern: 3
Be itknown that I, B. R. HAwLnY, of Normal, in the county of McLea-mand in the State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements plates, so attached to the outside of the fire-chamber .of any heating-stove, furnace, or steam-boiler, as to great] y increase the heating-surface, the size of the fire-pot; l
I have designed this improvement on the \i ell-known principle that heat in metals passes rapidly from parwithout increasing ticle to particle, while in heating air, heatiscommunicated mostly by circulation, and the air coming in direct contact with the heating-surface.
-It -will be readily seen, that by placing a flange vertically in direct contact with the heated surface'of a store, the heat'would be absorbed by the flange, and at once the flange would become itseli'heating-,
surface, and yet not materially obstruct thefiow of air around the stove; and, by multiplying these vertical flanges, or using a deeply-corrugated plate, and attaching it to the store at the bottom ofeach corrugation, the fire-surface thus added may be made to equal, or even quadruple the surface of the original ,stove, and yet the circulation of air be nearly as free as before the flanges were attached; and the surface being thus increased, it follows that I can heat a larger volume of air than can be done without the flanges. By surrounding the stove or heaterwith an outer drum of iron,'or other wall, which drum or wall shall also enclose tliefianges, it will be seen that I at once have a ventilating-stove, and may be set over an airduct, so asto pass the cold air between the stove and drum, and thus bring it into immediate contact with the heating-surface; or, it used only as a common heater, without ventilation, the drum may be made so asnot to quite reach the floor, and thus allow, the
air in the room to flow freely up between the stove and drum; g
In order to enable others skilled in the art'to which my inventionappertains, to make and use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and 0pcratlon, referring to the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a vertical section, and i Figure;2, a horizontal section of a stove, with my improvement attached. 7
A represents the fire-chamber of astove, and is provided on its outside with a series of vertical curved flanges, B B, of sheet-iron, sheet-copper, or other suitable material, riveted or otherwise secured to the stove, These flanges extend from the grate upward, the entire height of the stove, and are surrounded by a drum, 0, so constructed as to leave an open space around the lower end of thestore, and also between the inner surface of the drum and the outer edges of the curved flanges, allowing the air in the room to flow up between the stove and the drum, becoming heated during its passage. i
Thesma-ll space leftbetween the outer edges of the curved flanges B B and the inner surface of the drum 0, increases the draught, and causes the air to circulate more rapidly around within the drum, from one flange to the other. v
This arrangement may be applied to all kinds of heaters, furnaces, steam-boilers, 85c.
I am aware that the arrangement. of a series of straight vertical flanges in a drum is not new; hence I do not claim such to be my invention.
I contend, that by the use of the curved flanges, I obtain a greater quantity of heating-surface, and that the heat will hemore effectually retained and radiated upon the outer drum.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What Lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f The vertical curved flanges B B, extending from the grate to the top of the stove, and surrounded by an outside drum, 0, with a space between the edges of said flanges and drum, all as herein shown and described. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I' have hereunto set my hand, this 1st day of September,
B. R. HAWLEY.
