STOCK-TROUGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led February 8, 1910. `Serial No. 542,669.
To all whom 'L may` concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. ANDER soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at `Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Troughs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its primary object, a simple, durable and eflicient construction of watering trough for horses, cattle or other stock which will automatically maintain the drinking compartment of the trough at a predetermined level, the communication between the trough and the source of supply being automatically controlled so that the fresh water will flow into the trough as the supply is used.
lith this and other obj ects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a watering trough constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the water inlet tube and its plug or valve.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, l designates the body portion, the same being of any desired construction, size or design and being divided by a transverse partition 2 into two compartments A and B, the compartment A in the present embodiment of the invention being larger than the compartment B and being intended for the drinking compartment while the compartment B is designed to contain water controlling devices. Communication is established between the two compartments by any desired number of openings 3 formed at a predetermined level in the partition 2, preferably near the upper edge thereof.

In the presentl instance, the Hoat 4L consists of a tapered board hinged within the compartment B to a transversely extending supporting bar 5 and provided at one side of its pivot with a substantially air tight chamber 6 designed to add to the buoyancy of the float. On the other side of its pivot or supporting bar 5, the float l is provided with a valve 7 which is suspended therefrom and which is adapted to fit within the upper open end of a vertically disposed inlet tube 8 extending up into the compartment B and preferably secured at its lower end in the bottom of the trough.
The inlet tube 8 is formed near its upper edge with any desired number of orifices 9.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved watering trough will be apparent.
In the practical use of the device, the water flows into the tube 8 from any tank or other source of supply, and will flow from said tube 8 through the orifices 9 into the compartment B and from thence through the opening or openings 3 in to the compartment A untilv a level is reached which will be suflicient to lift the float- 6 high enough to close the upper end of the tube with the valve 7. Manifestly as the water is used, the float will fall and open the tube again, a definite level being thereby maintained, and it being insured that there will always be water in the compartment A, so long as the source of supply does not fail.
If desired, the trough may be provided with a top or lid l() the same entirely closing the compartment B and preventing leaves or other trash from getting into the compartment and interfering with the float and valve. If desired, this top or lid may eX- tend over the compartment A and be formed with any desired number of openings 11, a lid of this character being especially designed for hogs.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A watering trough comprising a body portion, a vertically disposed inlet tube mounted therein and provided at its upper edge with outlet orices, a plug adapted to Close the upper end of the tube and arranged to extenddown therein fur enough to Close the orifices, a cross bar mounted in the body portion of the trough and a float hinged intermediate of its ends to the Cross bar, the plug being suspended from one end of the float and the float being provided at its opposite end with an air Chamber.
