My invention-[relates to certain improve-- ments in'superheaters or; feed water heaters locomotive. r U
The object of my invention jis' to provide a deflector which will cause the products which are situated in thejes'moke box of a" of combustion passing from the tubes of the boiler to pass through the superheater tubes before passing to the stack. This particular type of superheater is fully,
described and claimed in an application for patent. filed by me on-the seventh day of I form adischarge casing or deflector consisting of two vertically arrangedplates E-E, one mounted'on each side of the nozzle C and extending from the base of the smoke box to the roof in the present instance .as clearly shown in Fig. 3. draftopenings which allow the products of i combustion topass through the perforations,
as well asaround the plates to the stack. These perforated or grated sections 6 may,
be made of a separate plate set into the deflectors E and the perforations may be in the form of slots, as shown, or the per'fora tions may be circular or the sections 6 formed of fine gauze; the object being to make the perforations of such a size that coarse sparks and cinders will not pass through the perforations, but will be deflected and dropped to the bottom of the smoke box. In order to allow room for the steam supply pipes to the superheaters the vertical plates E-E are cut away as. shown in Fig. 1, and a horizontal plate e extends across the smoke box from one side to'the other as clearly shown in Fi'gs. land 3, so as to deflect the products of combustion; the tubes of the boiler not extending above this plate.

'Thus the superheating tubes willbe properly heatedand the waste products of combustion will readily pass to the stack. r
In Fig. i, I have illustrated my inventio as applied to a smoke box feed water heater, the feed water heater being made insections D'D somewhat similar to sections 1) of the superheater. Each section has an upper head at and a lower head (1, the lower heads being connected together by pipes i and the upper heads being attached to pipes I-I', one connected to the water supply and the other to the boiler. The deflecting plates in this construction are similar in all respects to the plates in the superheater and deflect the products of combustion in the same manner causing the products of combustion to pass through the spaces between the tubes of the feed water heater.
, I claim:
1. The combination with a boiler of asmoke box, a series oi tubes within the smoke box and at each side of the center thereof, and vertically arranged deflecting plates within the smoke box placed to cause the products of combustion tonpass through the spaces between the tubes, the portions of the each side of the nozzle, the ends of said plates adjacent to the boiler being inclined toward each other, and the other ends of the 1 plates being perforated, with an inclined screen arranged between the plates.
The combination with a tubular steam boiler, of a sct oit'steam headers in the upper portion (AR-the smoke box con'imunicatlng with the main steam supply pipe of the boiler, a second set of steanr'neadcrs in the 5 lower portion of the smoke box connnunicat- I ing with branch steam pipes leading to ent l l gine cylinders, sets of super-heater pipes lo cated at opposite sides of the smoke box and connecting the headers of the two sets, deflecting means extending in the smoke box in front of the tube sheet, with a discharge casing ex'tendipg lon itudinally from the deflecting means tot-11% smoke box front and vertipally from the exhaust pipe to the lower openlng of the stack, there being lateral draft openings in the discharge casing, and a screen covering said draft openings.
4:. The combination with a tubular steam boiler, of a'T-head, saturated steam headers in the smoke box on opposite sides of the T- head and communicating therewith, superheated steam headers secured to opposite sides of the smoke box near the lower portion thereof, sets of sunerheater pipes located on opposite sides ot the smoke box and connecting the saturated and superheated steam headers on each side thereof, deflecting means in the smoke box in front of the tube sheet, a discharge casing extending longitudinally from the deflecting means to the smoke box front and vertically from the exhaust pipe to the lower opening of the stack, there being lateral draft openings in the discharge casing, and a screen covering said openings.
5. In a locomotive boiler having a smoke box which receives heated gases at one end, the combination of .means in said smoke-box forming a central discharge chamber closed from communication with the rest of the smoke-box except at its end remote from the point of ingress of the gases thereinto and discharging at its other end through an outlet in the side of the smoke-box, the wall ol said chamber at its end remote from the point of ingress of the gases into the smokebox being foraminous to allow ingress ct said gases into said chamber, and superheah ing means in said smoke-box in the path of the gases as they pass from their point of ingress thereinto to their point of ingress into the discharge chamber.
