BASIN-COCK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basin Cocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to basin cocks intended more especially for use in connection with wash bowls, and in other localities where both right and left hand cocks are used; and has for its object to provide a cock which can be used interchangeably as a right or left hand cock.

At the present time it is customary to manufacture basin cocks as rights or as lefts ,'depending upon the service they are to perform, and this necessitates carrying in stock cocks of these two classes. At present certain cocks are made in such a way that by the use of proper tools the spout may be changed from one side to the other, thereby changing the cock from a right to a left, or vice versa, but such cocks cannot be easily changed to perform either service, and when they have once been installed they cannot be changed without considerable trouble.

It is the purpose of this invention to provide a cock which may be used interchangeably as a right or left without the necessity of employing special tools or considerable labor in making the change; a cock which may be changed from one form to the other while in service, without the necessity of even shutting off the water; a cock of which the spout may be turned back after filling the bowl or other receptacle with water, so that it will not interfere with the washing process, or in any other manner; and one which when in service for long periods of time will not leak or become easily disarranged.

Other new and useful objects will appear from a detailed description of the invention, which consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the figures, a movable portion 4; may be connected to a body portion 5 by means of any suitable swivel joint 6, but preferably one which will permit the spout at to be turned with case at any time and which will not leak in use. The body portion 5 may be of ordinary construction, being provided with a terminal 7 for connection to the supply pipe, a threaded portion 8 adapted to pass through the slab of a wash bowl or similar receptacle, a base portion 9 adapted to rest on the slab, a nut 10 for securing the cock to the slab, a handle 11 for turning the water on and off, and such other attach ments as may be desired. The upper portion of the body 5 may be provided with a neck 12 threaded on its exterior portion and preferably smooth on its interior portion. The spout or movable portionet may be provided with a neck 13 having near its lower portion a collar 1% of a size permitting it to be inserted within the neck 12. A cap nut 15 may be carried by the neck 13, the cap nut being threaded on its inner portion 16 so that it will thread onto the outer portion of the neck 12. A compression sleeve 17 carried by the neck 13 and of a size to permit it to be inserted within the neck 12 may be provided, so that cotton, thread, string, or other suitable material 18 surrounding the neck 13 may be compressed between the sleeve 17 and the collar 1 1, thereby forcing the packing outwardly against the inner side of the neck 12.

The body portion of the cock is provided with a shoulder 19 against which the collar 14: may rest so as to support the same during the compression caused by screwing down the nut 15.

In manufacturing my rightand left hand cock, I prefer to mark the upper portion 20 of the handle 11 so that when viewed from one side the word Hot will be visible, and when viewed from the other side the word Cold will be seen. Thus the side 21 might be marked Hot and the side 22 Cold, so that when the spout is turned so that the handle is on the left side of it the word Hot will be visible from in front, and so that when the spout is turned so that the handle is on the right side of it the word Colt will be visible from in front.

It will be seen that when the spout has been properly connected to the body portion of my improved cook, it may be readily turned in either direction to suit the convenience of the user, and when turned in position it will retain such position until again changed. Also that owing to the method of packing used it will not leak when it has been in service for long periods.

It will be seen that my invention pro vides a simple rightand left hand cock, which, owing to the manner of its construction, may be made to assume any position desired. This is particularly advantageous for use in connection with small wash bowls or similar receptacles, in which it is desired to turn the spout away from the bowl after the same has been filled, so as to give as much wash space as possible. For this reason my cock may be used not only as a right or as a left, thereby fulfilling the requirements ordinarily coming upon both kinds of cocks, but it may be advantageously used on wash bowls in which only one cock is provided, or where more than one is used when it is desired, as above stated, to turn the spout back out of the way when not in use.

Although I have shown and described a cock in which the supply pipe is a vertical one, still I do not limit myinvention to such a cock, inasmuch as it is seen that any arrangement may be used whereby the spout may be swiveled about a vertical joint, whether the body portion of the cock be vertical or not, and whether the handle be on the vertical or horizontal portion.

Obviously my improved form of cock may be used in any location where it is desired to obtain the advantages arising from the use of a swiveled spout, or from the double marking of the handle.

I claim:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a vertical body portion having formed in its upper part a vertical neck threaded on its outer face, a valve in the body portion, a spout having formed on one end a vertical neck, a collar formed on said vertical neck near the end thereof and adapted to be inserted within the neck formed on the body portion, a cap nut surrounding the vertical neck of the spout and adapted to be threaded onto the neck of the body portion, and packing adapted to be forced into place by the cap nut, substantially as described.

2. A basin cock including a body portion, a swivel spout, and a faucet handle on an axis projecting from one side of the body portion,,the swivel spout being normally rotatable in service about a vertical axis and normally non-leakable in service whereby said spout may be rotated to one side when the bowl has been filled and whereby said spout may be placed in any desirable position with respect to the bowl, and the faucet handle being marked with one char acter on one side of its axis of rotation and with another character on the other side of its axis of rotation whereby when the body portion has been so adjusted on the bowl that the handle is on the proper side thereof and the spout has been thrown into corresponding working position and the handle placed in working position the proper char acter on the handle will be displayed to the user of the basin cock, substantially as described.

3. A basin cock including a body portion. a spout rotatable about a vertical axis and a handle on an axis projecting from one side of the body portion, the handle being provided with a gripping portion and an index portion, the index portion being marked with one character on one side of the axis of rotation of the handle and with another character on the other side of the axis of rotation of the handle, whereby when the body portion has been properly adjusted to the bowl. and the spout being in working position the proper character of the index portion of the handle will be displayed, sub stantially as described.
