Description

To all whom it may 'coiz cern:

sjo. CAMPBELL, o-r
fittest dtyifiire.
ITIPTONFMISVSOURI.
Letters Pal-teat No. 97,876, dated December 14, 1869 IMPROVED RAILWAY-CAR COUPLING.
The Schedule'refened to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Be it'knowu that I, S. 0. CAMPBELL, of Tipton, in and State of Missouri, have invented anew and improvedOar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iii-the .art to make and use the i being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichsame, reference Figure 1 represents a vertical Figure 2 the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate parts. w l I This invention relates to a new car-coupling, which is so arranged that it'will be selt couplingand that it will retain the coupling-pin ready to look as long as is a plan or top view, partly in'section, of
in the use of a pivwhich is arranged within the The invention consists, chiefly,
is uncoupled, sustaining the counling-pin on its upper end. a
When the link is inserted, it strikes either the upper or lower arm of said plate, and swings the same 7 into the horizontal position, thereby bringing its aper-' 'ture under. the pm, which will drop to lock theliuk.
A great advantageof this invention is, that it couples entirelyautomatic, and another, that it is adapted to lock higl1 ai1d low carstogether, as the link can enter thecoupling-box either above or below the partition to which the plate is pivoted.
v A, in the drawing, represents the coupling-box, made l of a COHlJiHHOIJ-SSiilitl), a, bent U,-shape'd'around the a upportingbeanis B'O, andoi thefront mouth-piece b, as shown. v
Into this box. is fitted a horizontal partitlon, D,
which may valso'be rnade of one 'p1ate,doubled up longitudinal section corresponding either. above or below where it forms the partition, and bent up and down at the ends,'to form an abutment for the link.
This partition D has a four-sided aperture in it, and supports a plate, E, which is, by a transverse pin, a, pivotedin the slot, as shown.
This plate E is heavier at one end, and will therefore hang perpendicular, as in fig. 1.
* Directly above it is, in the box A, an aperture for. the coupling-pin F, which pin is supported in the up, per end of the plate E, as shown.
When the coupling-link G is inserted in the box A, either above or below the partition D, it strikes againstthe upper or lower part of the plate E, and swings the sameinto a horizontal position, thereby bringing an aperture, which is in the middle of the plate E, in line with the coupling-pin, lock the link. 7
When the pin is raised'to uncouple, the plate E will resume its vertical position, and'will again sustain the pin for the next coupling. l
The beams B O are held apart by a spring, H, wound around a guide-pin, I, and serve, therefore, as cushions. for the couplings.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl 1. The perforated plate E, pivoted in a partition of a coupling-box, and weighted at one end to hang vertical, and tosustain the coupling-pin as long as the link is not introduced, allowing the link to be applied the said partition, as specified.
'2. The perforated partition D, arranged in acoupling-box, for supporting the weighted pivoted perforated plate E, as set forth. S. O. CAMPBELL. Witnesses: M. E. Momns, A. E. HAWES, JAS. BARKER.
