To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MALCOLM SALMOND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Amusement Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to amusement devices, and has more particularly for its obp ject the provision of a toy torpedo or the like,

which is entirely harmless but designed to create amusement and pleasure in its use.

The invention is fully described in the following specification and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a device embodying my invention with a portion of the interior parts in full. Fig. Q, is a cross-section on the line :a a: in Fig. l, and Fig'. 3 is a side elevation of the device with the top diaphragm and its retaining ring removed and the contained ligure sprung outwardly.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shell which is preferably of a shape to represent a torpedo of the type usually used on the Fourth of July, one end of such shell being closed, as at 2, and the other end open, as shown. The open end of the shell is intended to be closed by a diaphragm 3 of some quickly combustible material, such, for instance, as flashlight paper of the kind used by photographers. The diaphragm 3 is larger than the end of the shell to provide an overhanging edge over which a retaining ring 4 may be drawn to coperate with the shell end to hold the diaphragm drawn tightly over the end of the shell, as indicated in Fig. 1. Extending from the center of the diaphragm 3 is a fuse 5.

Located within the shell 1, in the present instance on a partition 6 therein, is a coiled 'compression spring 7 upon which is mounted a figure or other suitable device 8, which is shown as representing Uncle Sam.

When the diaphragm 3 is in position over the open end of the shell, it bears upon the top of the figure to hold it and the spring 7 compressed within the shell, as indicated. Upon arelease of thefi ure8 byaburning or destruction of the diaphragm 3 in some other manner, the spring 7 acts upon the figure to quickly force it outward from the open end of the shell to the exposed position shown in outline in Fi 3. A pliant skirt 9 of cloth or other sultable material connects the ligure to the partition 6 to limit the outward movement thereof, as is apparent.

In the use of this device, the fuse 5 is lighted and as it burns to and ignites the diaphragm 3, said diaphragm quickly burns and liberates the inclosed figure 8 which springs outwardly from the shell under the influence of the spring 7. To pre are the device for another o eration it is on y necessary to force the ligure within the shell, place a new diaphragm 3 with its attached fuse 5 over the open end of the shell and secure it in position thereon by forcing the ring over the shell and interposed edge of the diaphragm.

It is apparent that I have provided a harmless article for use on the Fourth of July or at other times when fireworks are used which is adapted to create considerable pleasure and amusement in its use; and also that it may be re eatedly used by merely securing a new laphragm 3 in position thereon, as above described.

I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.

' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. An amusement device, comprising a hollow member having an open end, a combustible diaphragm removably closing the open end of such member, a igure held within the member by said diaphragm, and means for causing sald ligure to sprmg outwardly from the open end of the member upon a destruction of the diaphragm.

2.
