To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Bumper, of Philadelphia, in the county of lhiladelphia and State of Pennsyl 'auia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure I, represents an end view of a reel embodying my invention, and Fig. II, is an axial section of the same on the lines II, II, of Fig. I.
The invention relates to sheet metalreels, in which the parts are to a large extent stamped or pressed into shape by means of dies, and its purpose is to atlord means for conveniently attaching and properly protecting the labels, which are desirable for use in connection with the charged or filled reels, in order to indicate the contents thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1, and 2, represent the heads of the reel, substantially alike in general structure, and 3, the intermediate drum against which the heads are clamped by means of bolts l, secured by nuts 5, the tubular axial member 6, being attached to the head at the region 7.
Each of the heads is provided at its external periphery with an outwardly projecting rim 8, which may be a flange or bead, the projection having considerable depth. In the head between this projecting rim and the point of attachment of the tubular axis 6, I form a plurality of projecting tongues, in this instance four in number, respectively indicated at 10, 11, 12, and 13, said tongues being struck up integrally from the metal of the head. In the present instance, they are arranged at what may be considered as the four corners of a square, with the ends facing inward or toward the center of figure thereof, but this precise method of arrangement is not essential.
The metal of the tongue is preferably suiticiently extended to substantially cover the opening from which it has been struck, and, as will be seen in the sectional view of Fig. II, the extent of their projection from the general plane of the head, is less than the depth of the outwardly projecting rim 8. The width and thickness of the tongue is sul'licient to prevent them from being easily bent or distorted.
The label intended to designate the character of the contents of the reel can readily be inserted beneath the tongues, and will be retained in position thereby, the projecting rim 8, all'ording the necessary protection in case the reel is stood upon its end, and also tending to shield the tongues and label from contact with objects generally. In the illustration I have only shown the tongues as applied to one head of the reel, but obviously they might be used upon both thereof.
Ilaving thus described my invention, I claim In a sheet metal reel provided with an outwardly projecting peripheral rim, and having a central drum, and means for connectin the heads thereto, the combination with the head, of a plurality of converging tongues, integral with the metal of the head, and arranged in a group radially beyond the region of contact between the head and the drum, said tongues being extended outwardly from the general plane of the head, but lying in a plane within the depth of the peripheral rim.
