FORMING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1910.
Application filed February 1, 1910. Serial No. 541,359.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HART SOHRADER, J r., and ZACHARY P. FORSTER, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forming-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to forming machines and is particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of candy baskets, candy hats and other similar candy forms which itmay be possible to make by applying the herein mechanical principle in the production of such forms.
The object of the invention resides in the production of a device of the character de scribed which will be exceedingly simple in construction, eflieient in use and which may be manufactured and sold ata very low cost.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine constructed in accordance with the invention, same being shown attached to a fragment of a table or other fixed object; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1, portions thereof being shown in section; Fig. 3, a detail View of the former of the machine; and, Fig. 4:, a detail perspective view of the operating shaft which rotates the former together with the means for rotating said shaft.
Referring to the drawings, the machine is shown as comprising an upright or standard 10 the lower end of which is bent to form two parallel horizontally spaced portions 11 and 12 in the latter of which is mounted an adjustable clamping screw 13, whereby a portion of a table A, or other fixed object may be inserted between the portions 11 and 12, and the upright thereby secured in place by screwing the clamping screw against the lower face of the table or fixed object A and thus binding same firmly between said clamping screw and the portion 11.
The upper end of the standard 10 is provided with a transverse aperture 14: which constitutes a bearing for a horizontally disposed shaft 15 which extends on both sides of said standard. One end of said shaft has secured thereto a hand wheel or disk 16 which is vertically disposed and provided with a horizontal handle 17, whereby said wheel 16 may be rotated and :1. corresponding rotation of the shaft 15 etl'ected. The other end of the shaft 15 is threaded as at 18 and a former 19, which may be of any desired figuration, but in this instance shown with one end thereof of spheroidal formation and the other end plane, is provided with a longitudinal centrally threaded bore adapted to screw on the threaded portion 18 of'the shaft 15 so that when said former is mounted on the shaft it will be rotated in unison therewith. The length of the former 19 is such that when same is screwed on the shaft 15 a portion of said shaft will protrude beyond the outer end of said former and constitute a securing pin. Projecting from'said former in parallel spaced relation with the portion 20 of the shaft is another pin 21, also adapted to serve as a securin means for the product which is to be wound upon the former.
In operation it is only necessary to take a strip of candy and place the end thereof between the pin 21 and the portion 20 of the shaft 15 and institute a rotation of said shaft, the initial rotation of said shaft serving to lock the terminal of the candy strip upon the pin 21 and portion 20, and further rotation of said shaft causes the strip to be wound upon the surface of the former 19. This operation when complete produces an article having the shape of the former which may then be removed. It will be further noted that the inner plane of the former 19 is extended to form a flange 22 which projects beyond the main body portion of said former. This flange serves to compress the product together at the termination of the winding of same on the former and thus produces a very compact structure.
\Vhile the machine has been described as particularly adapted to the manufacture of various shaped candy objects it will be noted that same may be utilized with equal facility in covering devices of various nature with strips of material; this being accomplished by the use of formers of a shape adapted to hold the particular object Which it is desired to cover.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a standard provided With a bearing opening, a shaft mounted in said bearing opening having a threaded intermediate portion and a reduced terminal, a conical former detachably mounted on said threaded intermediate portion, the outer end of said former being terminated inwardly of the outer end of said reduced terminal, a pin projecting from said former at its apex in spaced relation to the reduced terminal of said shaft, a circumscribing flange on the inner end of said former, and means for rotating said shaft.
