OSCILLATING ELECTRIC FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Doc. 13, 191th Application filed July 6, 1910. Serial No. 570,659.
the same, reference being,` had to the accouipanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichli`ig`ure"1 is a general View of my iniproved fan with certain parts broken away, and other parts in section, so as to clearly show the novel construction. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are detail Views of certain novel features of construction.`
My invention relates generally to electric fans and more particularly to that class of fans wherein the motor housing and fan blades oscillateA or swing in order that the current of air created by the fan blades will bc delivered throughout the are ot' a circle, and the particular ob'cct oi my invention is to provide Simp e rmeans connected to the tan tor automatically bringing about the oscillating` or shiftingmovenient.
ToV the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings 1 indicates the fan base which is of ordinary construction, and has rotatively mounted thereon a motor casing 2. 'Within bearings for 'the casing is rotatably mounted the armature of an electric motor 3 the hub 5 of which is mounted to turn on a stationary hollow 4shaft or sleeve 4. To one end of the hub 5 is screwed the hub G of a fan 7L The hub 6 is hollowed out and threaded internally to screw uponthe hub 5.
Beyond the screw threaded portion of the hub 6 is an. opening 8, and in the center of the hub directly between the blades 7 the hub is bored or reamed out yas at 9, and 'formed with an internal threaded por tion lO, and a smooth ybored portion. ll` l'Vithin this portion of the hub G is screwed a plug' 12 which has a .suitable threaded periphery to tit into the internallythreaded portion of the huh (i, and asniooth portion to lit within the smooth bore 9. This plug 1Q is formed as shown in ig. Z with a smooth bore opening .t3 and a cut away portion lt forming prgjpctions l5 and 16 on either side thereof lVithln the sleeve 4 and .fitting inthe openingsr 13 ot' the plug 12 is fitted a rod or spindle 15 having one cnd thereof [lattencd on either side as at 16' and a conically lil) formed end 17. Theother end of the rod' l5 passes through a plug 18 screwed into the end ot' the hollow shaft- 4 and has a worm QOlmounted thereon between the bear-V i ing 19, and another bearing 21A in the :framey or standard. The worm Q0 engages a gear E24 operatively connected with a mechanism indicated generally as 2Q for oscillating the fan. This oscillating mechanism is old,
and has been described and'illustrated in` the patent to myself and Charles R. Meston No. 952,458, and dated March 2Q, 1910. Itl
is not necessary to describe this mechanism in detail as my invention does not include any specific features oi' this device.
' The plug ll has a dislnshaped t'ace at 23 in order that the rod 15 may he easily positioned therein. The sleeve 4 lits within the huh 5 of the motor with a screwed end piece 25 attached forming a shoulder 26 to lit against one face of the hub lhc other end of the sleeve fl bears against the 'tace ot' the plug 18.
By use of my device the motor drives the fan, and a simple and direct connection is made between thelan and the mechanism for oscillating 'the motor on the base 1.
A. fan of my improved constriuzlion is very simple and can be easily and quickly adjusted, and the oscillation or lateral swing' of the motor and 'fan blades is accomplished by a simple positive connection luetwecu the -lan and the oscillating means, which allows the wormpnd worm'shaft of the oscillating means to he readily removed and renewed.
I am aware that various changes in the construction, arrangement and combination ot parts may be made without. deipiurting from the spirit oi niy invention.
l claim:
